Baltimore Mayor Convicted

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Remember earlier in the year when Barack Obama uninvited Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon from The White House? Here is how The Baltimore Sun reported on it in February.

After being invited yesterday to join more than 70 mayors for a meeting with President Barack Obama at the White House today, indicted Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon was abruptly un-invited hours later, according to her spokesman.

“We were really hoping that the mayor was going to make this meeting at the White House,” said spokesman Scott Peterson. “But it does not look like it is going to happen.”

Peterson could not say why the mayor was un-invited to the meeting, coordinated by the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Now we know why. Just breaking news from WBAL, the Democratic Mayor of Baltimore has been convicted of misappropriation of funds.

A Baltimore Circuit Court jury has convicted Mayor Sheila Dixon of one count of misappropriation for the misuse of gift cards from developer Patrick Turner.

Listening to the local news, this could force her from office….

MD: O’Malley Hits All-Time Low For Job Approval

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

Our own Governor Martin O’Malley is down to his all-time low for job approval in the latest poll from Gonzales Research and Marketing Strategies. He had hit a record low two months ago and now has fallen even below that.

GOVERNOR O’MALLEY JOB APPROVAL
Approve 37%
Disapprove 48%

What is even more amazing is that O’Malley’s job approval is below 50% even among Democrats (48%). On the national level, both Barack Obama and Hillary lead John McCain, with Obama having twice as big a lead over McCain than Hillary does.

PRESIDENT – MARYLAND
Barack Obama (D) 51%
John McCain (R) 37%

Hillary (D) 47%
John McCain (R) 40%

This poll was done February 23-March 1 among 807 registered voters.

MD and VA Results Thread

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

Here is the results page for Virginia Board of Elections, which have been updated minute-by-minute in the past. Here is the results page for the Maryland State Board of Elections, although I don’t know how quickly they will be posting results. Personally, I think the best place to get the quickest results all in one place is The Washington Post, which will be covering results from both states.

There will be two big things I will be watching tonight. First, how well does Mike Huckabee do against John McCain in Virginia (I think McCain wins MD handily). Second, incumbent Congresspeople rarely lose in primaries, but Maryland offers the legitimate opportunity to see two incumbent congresspeople go down in flames tonight. We have Democrat Albert Wynn facing a rematch from two years ago against Donna Edwards in District 4 where Edwards barely lost two years ago. Also in District 1, liberal Republican Wayne Gilchrist is trying outlast two legitimate challengers, Andy Harris and EJ Pipkin. Gilchrist may benefit since the anti-Gilchrist vote will be split between Harris and Pipkin.

Polls close in Virginia at 7:00pm. Polls close in DC and Maryland at 8:00pm. I’ll be back then and do some liveblogging as the results come in.

UPDATE (6:25pm): From Campaign Spot at NRO

Early exit poll data for tonight…

In Maryland, McCain 57 percent, Huckabee 31 percent.

In Virginia, the second wave of data shows an extremely close race, less than a percentage point between McCain and Huckabee.

If that holds, a horrible night for McCain.

UPDATE (7:00pm): Fox News calls Virginia for Barack Obama on the Democratic side. Too close to call on the GOP side. Shep Smith says heavy turnout seen in conservative areas of VA.

UPDATED (7:38pm): Voting extended until 9:30pm in Maryland. I wonder if that affects my parents who are working the polls in Columbia.

UPDATE (7:46pm): Found the GOP results page for Virginia. With 30% of precincts in, McCain leads 48%-44%.

UPDATE (8:10pm): MSNBC calls DC for Obama. Unfortunately, I had to hear it while watching race-baiter Kweisi Mfume claim many Marylanders are racist. What an ass.

UPDATE (8:14pm): Are these cable news programs incapable of going to the Virginia Board of Elections website. They are already posting results for more than 50% of precincts, yet every cable news network is still in the 30’s. What gives?

UPDATE (8:29pm): Fox News calls Virginia for John McCain. VA is winner-take-all, so he gets 60 delegates to none for Huckabee.

UPDATE (8:34pm): Governor Ehrlich on MSNBC now.

UPDATE (9:09pm): Now with 81% in , McCain has opened up a 50%-41% lead. If McCain is up by 9%, why was this race “Too Close To Call” for so long?

UPDATE (9:30pm): Polls close in Maryland. Fox News immediately calls Maryland for Obama and Maryland for McCain. Now the fun starts watching whether the two incumbent congresspeople in District 1 and District 4 survive.

UPDATE (9:40pm): To finish things off, MSNBC calls DC for McCain. A clean sweep for both McCain and Obama tonight.

MD: O’Malley Job Approval At 35%

Monday, January 14th, 2008

The latest poll from The Baltimore Sun puts Barack Obama and John McCain in the lead in our home state of Maryland.

PRESIDENT – MARYLAND – PRIMARIES

McCain 26%
Huckabee 18%
Giuliani 16%
Romney 12%
Thompson 6%
Other 7%
Obama 39%
Hillary 26%
Edwards 12%
Other 4%

And mirroring a recent poll from Scott Rasmussen that showed our esteemed Governor with a 33% job approval rating, The Baltimore Sun has their own poll showing O’Malley’s job approval rating sinking into the 30’s.

GOVERNOR O’MALLEY JOB APPROVAL RATING
Approve 35%
Disapprove 45%

And when it comes to the massive tax hikes that have just been levied on the citizens of Maryland, more than 50% oppose the new taxes.

O’MALLEY TAX HIKE PLAN
Support 32%
Oppose 54%

Other snippets from the article, 51% of respondents think the plan is “unfair” to most people in Maryland and 52% think the Maryland economy is headed int he wrong direction.

Unfortunately, I have no faith that the voters of Maryland will remember this in three years when O’Malley is up for re-election. As the article points out, Governor Ehrlich never had a job approval rating below 50%, but that wasn’t enough for them to toss him out of office for O’Malley simply because of their hatred of Bush….

I am curious whether we will get any other information from this poll. I would love to see some poll numbers for the Congressional primary races in the 1st and 4th districts….

MD: McCain Could Win Here, Romney Probably Not

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

I’ve been holding off on posting some state head-to-head match ups until after tonight, but Rasmussen just released a new poll for my home state of Maryland that shows John McCain could win Maryland if Hillary could somehow miraculously overtake Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination. Mitt Romney does not do nearly as well.

PRESIDENT – MARYLAND

Obama 55%
Romney 34%

Hillary 52%
Romney 39%

McCain 45%
Hillary 43%

Obama 48%
McCain 42%

Some other numbers from the poll show Martin O’Malley gets an excellent/good job rating from only 37% 33% of Marylanders while 37% rate his performance as poor. And a majority wants the death penalty to stay (51%).

This poll was done January 8th among 500 likely voters.

The Emissions Test Scam?

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

Yes, it was that biannual event when I am forced to PAY the state of Maryland $14 for the privilege of letting them test my vehicle to make sure it doesn’t pollute the environment.

Now one would think the state of Maryland should be PAYING ME to sit in a line during a day off from work, which rather humorously consists of a bunch of cars sitting and idling and throwing an untold amount of “global-warming-causing carbon into the air. Here was the line I encountered yesterday.

In fact, the instructions the state of Maryland gives to you dictates that you should drive at least 20 minutes driving around at “highway speeds” prior to bringing your car in for testing. Yes, the state wants you to waste even more gas and thereby put even more carbon in the air in order to take their little test. Since it is impossible to reach “highway speeds” anywhere in Columbia and especially near the testing location, this requires one to leave the city of Columbia in order to take this test. I, being an environmentally-friendly person that I am (and wanting to save gas money), combined this with a few errands I had to run down in Maple Lawn. And you you will be glad to know that I passed with flying colors and thereby continue to do my part to save Al Gore’s planet…well, that, and my sacrifice to never fly in a private jet…unlike certain Nobel prize winners….

Now on a more serious note, how many cars actually fail this test? Is it 10%? 1%?, 0.01%? I can’t find this information anywhere, but I have never actually seen a car fail this test in all the times I have been bringing my car in for the test. Nor do I know anyone who has had a car fail. So that begs the question, if the number of cars that fail is small, whether all this testing every two years really has any meaningful impact on the air in Maryland – or is this just a chance for the state of Maryland to grab an additional $14 from every Maryland citizen who owns a car every two years?

MD: We’re The 5th Happiest People In The USA

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

So says a new report that ranks states from the happiest to most depressed states in the country, according to MSNBC.

Cheer up, Utah. That state, with West Virginia and Kentucky close behind, were just named the saddest in the country in a new report by Mental Health America.
….
Rounding out the top 10 saddest states were Rhode Island, Nevada, Oklahoma, Idaho, Missouri, Ohio and Wyoming.

On the bright side, South Dakota is home to some of America’s happiest people, followed by Hawaii, New Jersey, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, Louisiana, Illinois, North Dakota and Texas.

Here is the full list ranked in order of happiest to saddest.

And since this is a political site, we might as well breakdown the list among Republican-led and Democratic-led states. Among the top 25 happiest states, 13 have Republican Governors (incl soon-to-be LA) and 12 have Democratic Governors. And in the 25 saddest states, 9 are run by Republicans and 16 are run by Democrats (incl soon-to-be KY). So what does this mean? Probably nothing….

MD: Dems Want Your Money Anyway They Can Get It

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

I heard about this from some people at work last week when it was apparently first annoucned, but I was too busy that I never had a chance to investigate how true it really was. Since we are in the season where we might be purchasing gift cards for our friends and family, check out what the Democrats in the Maryland General Assembly (26 co-sponsors) were attempting to pass in the just ended Special Session. Here is an excerpt from House Bill 30 which would change the COMMERCIAL LAW Section of the Maryland Code to read as follows.

(C) (1) THE BALANCE REMAINING ON A GIFT CERTIFICATE SHALL BE PRESUMED TO BE ABANDONED ON THE LATER OF:

(I) THE DATE THAT IS 4 YEARS AFTER THE DATE THE GIFT CERTIFICATE IS PURCHASED; OR
(II) THE DATE THAT IS 1 YEAR AFTER THE DATE OF THE LAST PURCHASE MADE USING THE GIFT CERTIFICATE.
(2) ON OR BEFORE MARCH 1 OF EACH YEAR, A PERSON THAT SELLS OR ISSUES GIFT CERTIFICATES IN THE STATE SHALL REMIT TO THE COMPTROLLER THE BALANCE REMAINING ON EACH GIFT CERTIFICATE THAT WAS PRESUMED ABANDONED DURING THE PREVIOUS YEAR.
(3) ON OR BEFORE APRIL 1 OF EACH YEAR, THE COMPTROLLER SHALL DISTRIBUTE THE REVENUES RECEIVED UNDER PARAGRAPH (2) OF THIS SUBSECTION TO THE MARYLAND EDUCATION FUND ESTABLISHED UNDER § 5–201.1 OF THE EDUCATION ARTICLE.

So in other words, if you don’t use your gift cards as fast as the State of Maryland would like you to, then as far as the State of Maryland is concerned, you should be forced to give an unsolicited donation of that that money to the State of Maryland.

Thankfully, it appears this bill did not get past the first reading, but the fact that 26 Delegates actually sponsored this bill shows you what we are up against in the state of Maryland. It would not surprise me to see this bill pop up again next year….

MD: New Advertisement Against O’Malley’s Tax Hikes (UPDATED)

Tuesday, November 6th, 2007

This is an advertisement put out by some group called Citizens United.

It is not a bad ad, but it would have been better if they managed to spell O’Malley’s name right. They have corrected the spelling of his name and the new video can be found here.

UPDATED (10:33pm):
At least one Democratic Senator will oppose the massive O’Malley’s tax hikes. From The Washington Post.

An independent-minded Democratic senator became the first from his party to announce that he will join Republicans in attempting to kill Gov. Martin O’Malley’s tax plans through the use of a filibuster.

“In my mind, this is bad public policy,” Sen. James Brochin (D-Baltimore County) told reporters yesterday.

But then Brochin follows up with this laugh out line.

When did we become the party that raises taxes? ….. I’m hoping some of my colleagues will join me.”

Is he actually serious in making the statement that Democrats are not the party of “tax increases”?

MD: Giuliani Within 5% Of Hillary

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Could a Republican actually win my home state of Maryland in 2008. A new poll from Scott Rasmussen puts Rudy Giuliani within 5% of Hillary and John McCain within 7%.

PRESIDENT – MARYLAND
Hillary (D) 46%
Rudy Giuliani (R) 41%

Hillary (D) 47%
John McCain (R) 40%

Hillary (D) 49%
Fred Thompson (R) 37%

Hillary (D) 52%
Mike Huckabee (R) 31%

There is also these approval ratings for Governor O’Malley and the views of the public on O’Malley’s plan to raise the sales tax by 20%.

GOVERNOR O’MALLEY APPROVAL RATINGS
Good or Excellent 34%
Fair 33%
Poor 30%

O’MALLEY’S MASSIVE 20% SALES TAX HIKE
Support 27%
Oppose 66%

According to the article, even 57% of O’Malley’s own Democrats oppose raising the sales tax by 20%.

This poll was done October 24th among 500 likely voters.
