RNC 2008: The Hedgehog Has Landed

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Here is the first report as I am just getting into things. I have gotten my passes to get in over the next four days and am just getting acclimated to the scene. Just a few quick photos to get started. Here is a shot from the airplane window looking down on the city as we flew into Minnesota.

After getting there, we immediately headed out to the first protest of the convention. And what would be a protest without the orange jumpsuit folks.

Or this guy.

Now some more mundane stuff. Here is a shot of the Comedy Central headquarters during the convention.

And an obligatory tourist shot, the state house of Minnesota.

I haven’t been to the Excel Center quite yet. That’ll be tomorrow. We’ve heard about the toned-down convention event schedule, including President Bush and VP Cheney taking a pass on the first day of the convention. Tonight is a welcoming event for the Maryland State Delegation and I am sure much more partying later tonight.

More will be coming later, including some, hopefully, on-the-scene video reporting later in the week.

See You In Minnesota

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

A rare Saturday Night post to give you a new blank thread to yap on and to bring you some big news.

But before I get to that, some news of note heading into tomorrow, Red State caught on camera a former DNC Chairman laughing and joyous over the prospect of hurricane Gustav hitting the Gulf coast this week. Just absolutely sickening….

Democrat John Zogby is out with one of his interactive online polls claiming the ticket of McCain/Palin ahead of the ticket of Obama/Biden by 2% nationally. Couple this with the stagnation in the Rasmussen and Gallup tracking polls and it is clear the McCain campaign successfully stopped any momentum Obama was hoping for coming off his giving the greatest political speech in the history of the world.

Look, a video of Sarah Palin from 1989 as a sportscaster….

Now the big news. I’ve kept this quiet for a while, but now that the date is here, you will see a somewhat different Hedgehog Report over the next week starting tomorrow. You see, the next time you see a post from me will be from the ground in St. Paul, Minnesota at the Republican National Convention. Yes, The Hedgehog Report is going to Minnesota! Thanks to the help from a member of the Maryland Republican Party, I have been given a chance to attend the Republican National Convention next week and be in the arena for all the events.

As far as keeping up with the polls next week, I can’t promise anything since I do not know what my schedule will be like. But I at least hope to bring you some on-the-ground views of what is happening with pictures and maybe even videos. It will be my first convention ever, so I don’t even know what to expect. But as you can imagine, I am absolutely excited and looking forward to it and I hope I can bring you my personal experience to everyone.

Well I am packed and ready to go. Next time you hear from me will be from St. Paul later on Sunday or Monday….

Americans Like Palin Better Than Biden

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

I was with a bunch of friends who are big into politics last night. A few of them were not that enamored with John McCain, which is something I have noticed all year among my politically active friends that I hang around with. However last night, these same people (one who has previously said he would never vote for McCain) is now fully behind the ticket and excited. The pick of Sarah Palin made his day. And watching the news this morning, you can feel the shot in the arm that this pick has generated for Republicans

According to Scott Rasmussen, the American people have a much more favorable opinion of Sarah Palin on the day she was picked to become the next Vice President than they did about Barack Obama’s pick of Joe Biden.

After her debut in Dayton and a rush of media coverage, a new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey finds that 53% now have a favorable opinion of Palin while just 26% offer a less flattering assessment.
….
By way of comparison, on the day he was selected as Barack Obama’s running mate, Delaware Senator Joseph Biden was viewed favorably by 43% of voters.

I would also note that this pick seems to have stopped any momentum Barack Obama had after he delivered the greatest speech in the history of the world. After surging ahead by 4% in yesterday’s edition of his tracking poll, Barack Obama holds the same 4% lead today in Rasmussen’s tracking poll. If Obama was getting a bounce, one would have expected a higher lead today….

I didn’t watch much TV yesterday, but from what I have seen this morning, you can almost see the panic oozing out of the screen from the talking heads on pro-Obama cable channels CNN and MSNBC.

Friday Night Open Thread

Friday, August 29th, 2008

Interesting to note that my post last night for Barack Obama’s greatest speech in the history of the world only got 345 comments. The post for the pick of Sarah Palin has received 525 comments as of the time of this post.

To add more anecdotal , the people in office tend to be non-political and rarely talk about politics. There are a few political junkies, about half-and-half as far as Democratic/Republican. But even with that do they rarely even bring up politics. Today, I had four people, none of whom I have ever discussed politics with, come by my office and make a comment about the choice of Sarah Palin by John McCain. Not one of them mentioned last night’s speech by Barack Obama. For what’s it’s worth….

And to see how deranged some on the left have become, here were two comments left by those on the left side of the political spectrum that were left in the comments below.

What I really can’t wait for is the future Playboy pics of Sarah Palin after she’s defeated. I’m sue McCain will get advanced copies.

Sarah Palin = Dan Quayle. She just has better legs. I wonder if she can spell potato?

Really mature….

Anyway, it is time to announce the winners of The Hedgehog Report Vice Presidential Selection Prediction Contest. We had four people pick Sarah Palin and three people pick Joe Biden, but nobody picked both. Nobody who picked Biden had the right day but we did have two people who picked Sarah Palin on August 29th. Therefore, the co-winners are Tom and HiChris.

Anyway, here is a fresh post for your Friday Night musings….

McCain Picks Sarah Palin For VP!

Friday, August 29th, 2008

The news is breaking now – Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin will be the next Vice President of the United States!

There will be more about this later, but one thing that I find humorous is when you think back to all the talk and chatter of VPs being chosen to help in swing states and help bring electoral votes to the ticket. Yet somehow we end up with two vice-presidential nominees that come from states with a combined electoral college vote total of SIX!

ID: Risch Up Double Digits

Friday, August 29th, 2008

I am running a little behind this morning busy with many things……..okay, I overslept. Sue me.

The only poll I could find that I did not get to yesterday is this new one from Greg Smith & Associates for the state of Idaho to determine who will replace the infamous Larry Craig in the US Senate.

US SENATE – IDAHO (Greg Smith)
Jim Risch (R) 41%
Larry LaRocco (D) 29%
Rex Rammell (I) 3%

This poll was done August 18-22 among 600 registered voters.

There really should be no news today of any note, so really no point in paying much attention today or sticking around…I may just call it a day on this site and forget about it…I mean, what could possibly happen today that would be worth even mentioning….

DNC Night Four Open Thread

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

And tonight the DNC finally ends. I have to get this up a little early since I am about to head out for the night. The only real speech that matters is the one by Barack Obama, so if you really care who else is speaking, click here.

Looking back, I think I have watched a grand total of maybe one hour of this convention. I did catch Hillary’s entire speech on Tuesday, but other than that, I really haven’t been paying much attention to the multitude of speeches bashing Bush and McCain. And I know I won’t be able to watch any of Obama’s speech tonight.

Anyway, McCain is keeping up the heat with what I think is his best campaign ad yet.

With friend’s like these….

Of course, we may even get some news on whom John McCain picks to be the next Vice President tonight as well.

New US House Polls Form PA, CO and MI

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

How about some non-Presidential polls for a change. Survey USA has a new poll for the 10th congressional district in Pennsylvania.

US HOUSE – PENNSYLVANIA – CD10 (Survey USA)
Chris Carney (D-inc) 49%
Chris Hacket (R) 45%

The poll also shows John McCain would beat Barack Obama in this district by a 50%-415 margin, which is well down from the 60% Bush won in 2004. Survey USA is also out with a new poll in Colorado that shows an incumbent Republican in trouble.

US HOUSE – COLORADO – CD4 (Survey USA)
Betsy Markey (D) 50%
Marilyn Musgrave (R-inc) 43%

This poll was done August 22-24 among 618 likely voters. And another Republican house seat is in danger of flipping in the state of Florida, the 21st congressional district.

US HOUSE – FLORIDA – CD21 (Survey USA)
Raul Martinez (D) 48%
Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-inc) 46%

This poll was done August 24026 among 632 likely voters. McCain leads Obama 48%-46% in this same district. Meanwhile in Michigan, EPIC-MRA has new polls for the 7th and 9th congressional districts.

US HOUSE – MICHIGAN – CD7 (EPIC/MRA)
Tim Walberg (R-inc) 43%
Mark Schauer (D) 40%

US HOUSE – MICHIGAN – CD7 (EPIC/MRA)
Joe Knollenberg (R-inc) 43%
Gary Peters (D) 36%

This poll was conducted from August 21-23 for the 9th district and August 20-22 for the 7th district, each was conducted among 400 likely voters. Public Policy Polling came out with the second half of their North Carolina poll that gives Democrat Bev Perdue a 5% lead over Republican Pat McCrory.

GOVERNOR – NORTH CAROLINA (PPP)
Bev Perdue (D) 43%
Pat McCrory (R) 38%
Michael Munger (L) 45

This poll was done August 20-23 among 904 likely voters.

DNC Night Three Open Thread

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

Round three tonight. I guess I already missed the official nomination of Barack Obama. Here are the speakers you can expect tonight.

VP Nominee Neil Kinnock Joe Biden.

Hillary’s husband
former Senator Tom Daschle
Governor Bill Richardson
Senator Evan Bayh
2004 loser (and Vietnam Vet) John Kerry
Senator Jay Rockefeller
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid
Senator Ken Salazar
House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn
Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL)
Chicago Mayor Richard Daley
Representative Patrick Murphy (D-PA)
Iraq War veteran Tammy Duckworth

Pollwise, Rasmussen showed Obama losing yet another point and now trails McCain by 1%. Gallup did show Obama regaining some footing and now he leads McCain by 1% in that poll.

Meanwhile, John McCain is continuing to pound Barack Obama with daily ads.

Of course, part of it is that McCain has to spend as much money as he can by the time he accepts the nomination next Thursday since that is when the limits on his campaign spending starts. Which leads me to a question – could McCain delay accepting the nomination as long as possible to keep spending and raising primary money? I know the Vietnam Veteran John Kerry pondered doing that four years ago when Terry McAuliffe f’d up and scheduled the Democratic convention six weeks before the GOP convention. I was just curious….

Swing State Polls – CO, NV, NM, PA, OH, FL

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

CNN, Time and Opinion Research joined together to release a new poll in the four “swing” states of Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Pennsylvania. Here are the results.

PRESIDENT – COLORADO (CNN/Time/OR)
John McCain (R) 47%
Barack Obama (D) 46%

PRESIDENT – NEVADA (CNN/Time/OR)
Barack Obama (D) 49%
John McCain (R) 44%

PRESIDENT – NEW MEXICO (CNN/Time/OR)
Barack Obama (D) 53%
John McCain (R) 40%

PRESIDENT – PENNSYLVANIA (CNN/Time/OR)
Barack Obama (D) 48%
John McCain (R) 43%

All these polls were done August 24-26 among 625-670 registered voters in each state. The numbers in New Mexico seem to be wacky. In the past two weeks, we have seen Obama ahead by 13% and 6% in two polls and McCain ahead by 4% in another. How can they all possibly be right?

A new poll from Akron University in Ohio pegs the race at a dead exact tie.

PRESIDENT – OHIO (Akron U)
John McCain (R) 40%
Barack Obama (D) 40%

This poll was done, and I kid you not, between July 17-August 17 among 753 registered voters. Good grief, how useful can a poll be that is spread out over an entire month? Why not two months?

Finally, a pollster that many claim is the top polling company around goes against the grain and is out with a poll showing Barack Obama slightly ahead of John McCain in the state of Florida. The latest numbers from Mason-Dixon.

PRESIDENT – FLORIDA (Mason-Dixon)
Barack Obama (D) 45%
John McCain (R) 44%

This breaks a string of eight straight public polls that had McCain ahead of Obama in Florida. This poll was done August 25-26 among 625 registered voters. The only thing I will say is polling a state during a party convention would seem to give that party’s candidate an advantage. Why didn’t Mason-Dixon do this before the convention or wait until after the GOP convention to do state polling?

That should give you something to chew on heading into tonight….
