Happy New Year’s Eve!

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

On this snowy New Year’s Eve in Maryland….

I hope everyone had a great 2009 as I did and I wish everyone a Happy New Year and the start of what should be a great 2010!

Wednesday Morning Musings

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Exactly seven years and one day ago, there was no such thing as The Hedgehog Report.

The Democratic candidate in the Special Election in Rhode Island won by a mere 147 votes over the Republican candidate. Granted she only got 325 votes herself in a very low turnout election. In 2008, John McCain got 1550 votes in this district. That means all Republicans had to do to win this race was get 21% of the voters who showed up in 2008 to show up yesterday to vote and they could have gotten the 326 votes they needed to win this seat….

A GOP Congressman from California is retiring.

Oh, and Sarah Palin nearly beat out Hillary for the most-admired woman in the United States.

MD: Democrats Misspell Ehrlich’s Name In Email

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Now I don’t want to make too much of this since I am sure I have made my fair share of misspellings on this website. but then again, I do this as a hobby, not as a professional campaign worker. Here is the unedited text of an email the Maryland Democratic Party sent to me today (bold highlights are mine).

Maryland Republicans have some big plans this New Year’s Eve. They want to turn back time and party like it’s 2006.

I’m not kidding. We have watched all year how the GOP in Maryland and across the country has been the party of “no.” They have attempted to turn back the clock and recreate the past.

Maryland’s GOP wants the “good old days” when Erlich/Steele were in office; the days when Erlich/Steele raised more than $3 billion in hidden taxes, tolls and fees on Maryland families and raised state property taxes 57 percent.

Don’t let Republicans turn back the clock. Contribute $5, $10 or more by midnight December 31 to send Maryland Republicans a message that we’re not going back to the Bush/Ehrlich/Steele days.

I guess they have forgotten that Erlich/Steele cut funding for K-12 public education and increased college tuition by over 40 percent. Maybe they want to roll-back the progress we have made to make college more affordable.

Don’t let Republicans turn back the clock. Contribute $5, $10 or more by midnight December 31 to send Maryland Republicans a message that we’re not going back to the Bush/Ehrlich/Steele days.

Perhaps Republicans have forgotten that Maryland voters already rejected Erlich and asked for new management in 2006. Sure it was a bad year for Republicans after six years of George Bush, but he was the only incumbent governor of either party to lose re-election. Oh, and don’t forget – Michael Steele was roundly defeated by Senator Ben Cardin that same year. We all know why.

We won’t let them turn back the clock but we need your support. Because of your early generosity, we are already well on our way to our fundraising goal.

Contribute $5, $10 or more to help us raise $10,040 by midnight December 31. Help us meet our goal and put us over the top.

Maryland Democrats want to move forward not backwards! Your gift of $5, $10 or more will help us post strong fundraising numbers. Will you come through for us once more as we close the books on 2009? We’re counting on you!

Warm regards,

Susan W. Turnbull
Chair
Maryland Democratic Party

If you are the chairman of the Maryland Democratic Party, shouldn’t you make sure you at least proofread your emails to make sure you don’t look like a fool. Or maybe they misspelled his name on purpose….

RI: A Look At Tonight’s Special Election

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Before we close the book on the year, there is one more election to be held. In the state of Rhode Island, there is a special election to fill the seat being vacated by a Democrat in the Rhode Island House of Representatives. Based on the 2008 presidential election results for this district, Democrats should easily hold this seat.

RI HOUSE DISTRICT 62 – 2008 PREZ ELECTION
Precinct Obama McCain Others
2627 700 342 23
2628 611 274 17
2629 669 196 14
2630 549 134 13
2631 565 196 9
1003 867 417 24
. 3961 1559 100
70% 28% 2%

Tonight’s race will pit Republican Thomas Clupny against Democrat Mary Duffy Messier and Independent Paul Dinsmore. The website for the Rhode Island Secretary of State can be found here, not sure if they will have results. The Providence Journal may have some results on their website. Polls in Rhode Island close at 9pm.

NE: Backlash For Nelson

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

The first evidence that Ben Nelson’s vote for Barack Obama’s Health Insurance Reform Bill is going to cost him dearly is out with a new poll from Scott Rasmussen.

US SENATE 2012 – NEBRASKA (Rasmussen)
Dave Heineman (R) 61%
Ben Nelson (D-inc) 30%

Luckily for Nelson, he is not up for re-election until 2012 and I am sure he is hoping the voters forget by that point. This poll was done December 28th among 500 likely voters.

Open Thread Tuesday

Actually made it out of the house today…but still no polls to speak of….

Open Thread Monday

Monday, December 28th, 2009

Probably not going to be a lot of polls this week unless they were taken before Christmas last week. I am a little under the weather today, so I am stuck home watching a little TV and . Most of the news this morning is about the added security being added to the security protocol to air travel that clearly didn’t work before anyway. That is why this quote I found at Instapundit made me chuckle.

“Once again, airline passengers 1, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) 0. And the response of the TSA? To further punish the passengers, of course.”

Sad, but true…
