TN: Special Election For State Senate

Not a lot of polls out, mostly because I doubt any reputable pollster would even bother polling over the Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend. But we do have a Special Election in the state of Tennessee tonight to watch to see of Republicans can hold a State Senate seat. Republicans currently hold a 18-14 edge in the Tennessee State Senate.

Results from the Tennessee Secretary of State can be found here.

  1. Brandon says:

Also the Atlanta Mayoral runoff is today.

  2. Wes says:

Rdelbov thinks the GOP should hold this one pretty easily.

  3. Jason T. says:

    These special elections are quirky.

Whoever the GOP candidate is, I hope he ran against Obama.

  4. Jason T. says:

    2. Good

Nice to see Norwood win in Atlanta. Hopefully

  5. Wes says:

It’s unlikely the white candidate wins in Atlanta. The city’s too racially polarized.

  6. Jason T. says:

    5. True. sounded like she had a shot

  7. Wes says:

She may have a shot, Jason, but it’s long odds for her.

  8. KnightHawk says:

4 – Haha I’ll give up porn for a month if that happens. ;)

  9. Jason T. says:

Wes, can you believe it? The Cook county Board (Chicago) overrode a veto to reduce the County Sales Tax by a penny.

DEMS have a 3 to 1 Registration advantage in Cook, but the economy is awful and they feel the heat.

  10. Jason T. says:

Why would anyone live in a big city?

  11. Wes says:

    I have no clue, Jason.

  12. Wes says:

I’m happy living in the suburbs. I’ll be even happier living on a beach in the Bahamas.

  13. Jason T. says:

Wes, I imagine the politicians in the Bahamas are no different than Atlanta, just British.

  14. Jason T. says:

Hawk, ones that have more than one Pro Sports Franchise.

  15. Wes says:

They may be corrupt there, Jason, but as long as they let me enjoy my time ogling the bikini-clad babes and make sure my daughter has a good home life and education, I won’t care too much.

  16. KnightHawk says:

17 – Then I could not tell you, other then maybe easier odds at the bar.

  17. Wes says:

I say the Atlanta election goes to Reed by a 58-42 margin at least.

  18. Trolletta says:

First he backs off the public option
Now 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan

Obama is a closet conservative! Either that, or he is too eager to please the right, or he gets bullied to easily.

this man is not a leader

    Hillary in 2012!!!!!!!

  19. Brandon says:

#21. Wow really? I think Norwood wins a squeaker.

  20. KnightHawk says:

    18- It’s still a tie! ;)

  21. KnightHawk says:

55/54-46/45 Is my roughly my guess.

  22. Wes says:

Brandon, the blacks will turn out for Reed. No way a white candidate wins in that environment. Voting in Atlanta turns to run along racial lines.

  23. Brandon says:

I guess since we’re making guesses, I’ll say Norwood wins 51-49.

  24. Wes says:

Who’s your pick for the victor, Knight?

  25. Wes says:

Not going to happen, Brandon. I lived in Atlanta a few years ago. They vote en masee for black candidates. Like most Dems, they’re a huge flock of sheep.

  26. Brandon says:

Wes, I see no reason why Norwood won’t get at least the 46% she got in the original election.

  27. KnightHawk says:

22 – lol, A conservative would have sent 45k thousand, and made the call in September, or decided last spring on different approach.

  28. Wes says:

So has “Rudy” polluted this thread with her pro-Ron Paul, anti-white drivel lately?

  29. KnightHawk says:

28 – If I betting money I would put in on Reed, race typically rules the day in Atlanta proper.

  30. Wes says:

I can tell you exactly why, Brandon: Blacks subscribe to groupthink. They’ve united behind their man and will back him to the hilt, damn the consequences. No way they ever let a white woman beat a blakc man in that city. Not going to happen.

  31. Wes says:

There are many fewer whites than blacks in Atlanta; hence, the white woman has no chance.

  32. Chekote says:

    #12

Food selection. The Arts. Energy level. Lots of things to do.

  33. Brandon says:

Okay, so that still doesn’t explain why she gets less. There’s no reason for her supporters to desert her. Sure the black candidates totals will consolidate together and mostly go to Reed, but there’s no way Norwood gets below 45% IMO. Again, the only poll of this race showed Reed up 3.

  34. KnightHawk says:

34 – It probably could happen some day… eventually, but it would be shocker if it were to happen tonight.

  35. Wes says:

Yuo really don’t understand the politics of race relations in black-heavy urban areas, do you, Brandon?

  36. Chekote says:

    #22

Seriously, do you want the Taliban to take over Afghanistan so that AQ has again a launching pad from which to attack us? If only we could arrage for AQ to target all the people who anti-war.

  37. Brandon says:

Wes, she is a city council-woman, meaning she has been elected before by the same people going to vote now.

  38. Wes says:

The only way Norwood meets or exceeds her vote total from the earlier election is if there’s a sharp dropoff in the black-dominated inner city. That’s the only way she holds her own or beats Reed. Otherwise, it’s over for her.

  39. KnightHawk says:

My guess on turnout is like 1/2 or even less of what it was election day. I ain’t heard crap about this race in the news much in the last few weeks.

  40. Wes says:

She was elected from a white-dominated area in the state, Brandon. That should tell you something about racial politics down there.

  41. Brandon says:

The city is becoming whiter believe it or not:

“The city’s changing racial demographics could affect Tuesday’s outcome. In 2000, Atlanta was 33 percent white and 61 percent black. In 2007, the numbers were 38 percent white and 57 percent black, according to the U.S. Census.”

And the SUSA poll had the black turnout at 58% of the electorate.

  42. KnightHawk says:

46 – It is but I seriously doubt it’s enough this time around, eventually like I said it’s possible though if the trend shaves a few more points.

  43. Trolletta says:

41 Chekote- Of course not. Lets keep enough troops there to ensure that the Taliban does not return to power.

There’s no reason for this surge .. period. The more troops we have there, the more likely it is that we accidently blow up a village and add cause AQ to become larger and even stronger.

  44. Wes says:

Whites are diluting SOME of the black vote in the city, Brandon. They’re still 20% behind the blacks though. Blacks have their city, and they’re going to run it straight into the ground–just as they did New Orleans.

  45. Brandon says:

Well I guess we’ll see in about an hour Wes.

  46. Wes says:

Trolletta!!!! How go things for my favorite female socialist?

  47. Wes says:

    Apparently we will, Brandon.

  48. KnightHawk says:

Can I vote for #50 for the insane post of the day?

  49. Trolletta says:

Not good Wes. Socialism is dead in America LOL. How’s my favorite male Libertarian?

  50. KnightHawk says:

51 – What do you mean going too? Buddy it’s there, though I suppose they could try for Detroit bad.

  51. Trolletta says:

    55. Sure, you can also try rebutting :)

  52. Wes says:

Well, a few problems on the home front, Trolletta, but aside form that doing pretty well.

  53. KnightHawk says:

56 – Not according to Howard Dean. ;)

  54. Wes says:

Actually, Knight, the GOP bent of the surrounding areas has bled over slightly into Atlanta and kept it just a hairsbreadth above the topsoil.

  55. KnightHawk says:

58 – I might be temped but banging my head against an already well established brick wall doesn’t strike me as time well invested. It ain’t personal…I just think your nuts. ;)

  56. Trolletta says:

59 Wes, yes I skimmed some threads last week and read about your situation. How sad especially for your child :( Good luck to you and I’m sorry you have to go through this.

  57. Trolletta says:

    60. Which Howard Dean?

Sadly he is mistaken. Obama has destroyed Socialism in America .. sad indeed.

  58. KnightHawk says:

61 – It’s the GOP that’s done that, it’s the cash and tax revenue from all that inflated real estate…. even with that during the good times the ATL budget was a joke.

  59. Wes says:

    Thanks, Trolletta.

  60. Trolletta says:

62 thanks – Not the first time a HHR has backed away from a challenge issued by me. Don’t feel bad.. at least its 15 against 1 and I’m sure one of your buddies will come to your rescue :)

  61. Wes says:

Didn’t I say the GOP did that, Knight? I seem to recall making this statement:

61.Actually, Knight, the GOP bent of the surrounding areas has bled over slightly into Atlanta and kept it just a hairsbreadth above the topsoil.

  62. KnightHawk says:

68 – What’s sad Trolletta is I’m not the one in need of help.

  63. Trolletta says:

    70 Good one!

I like you KH, you usually don’t mix it up with me. Now I can see why :)

  64. Chekote says:

This is why is getting harder and harder to win war. We have people who want to win the war as long as you don’t use too many troops; you don’t spend too much money; you don’t kill too many people; you don’t take too long; the UN approves; you Mirandize prisoner and the list goes on…. What’s the point of having the MOAB when you can’t use it?!?!?!?!?!?

  65. Trolletta says:

OK time for me to head back to KOS for my talking points. Have a good night Obama lovers

  66. Wes says:

All right, this is off topic, but it’s definitely worth a laugh:

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0372784/board/thread/152559233?d=152559233&p=1#152559233

Some people just don’t think when they post.

  67. Wes says:

    Bye, Trolletta.

  68. Wes says:

Don’t forget Presidents who refuse to fire incompetent Secretaries of Defense and generals who are making a bad situation worse.

  69. Wes says:

    #76 was directed at Chek’s #72.

  70. KnightHawk says:

71 – A pointless endeavor, some are just too far gone, I could you among that group. I didn’t mix it up with KBoarded either..what’s the point besides passing time.

  71. KnightHawk says:

73 – Have a great evening watching Obama Trolletta.

  72. Wes says:

I just looked at a pic of Mary Norwood. For an older woman, she’s not bad looking. far from a 10 though:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Norwood

  73. KnightHawk says:

“Some people just don’t think when they post.”

If I had a nickel for every time…

  74. KnightHawk says:

I’ll pass on, or put another way NoWood.

  75. Wes says:

Let me guess, Knight…You’d have a few billion in the bank right about now…?

  76. Wes says:

I didn’t say she was gorgeous, Knight. For her age, she’s not bad looking though. I prefer mine younger and better looking for sure.

  77. Wes says:

Hey, Knight, have you checked out an Amazon Kindle or a Barnes and Noble Nook?

  78. KnightHawk says:

83 – Have to actually do the math.. but I would suspect for every time I’ve read a post and thought that same thing I’d at least have an extra 50k.

  79. KnightHawk says:

85 – No interest in either device, I like the hard cover when I’m reading a book. However the girl\voice in the Kindle commercial, that’s another story.

  80. Wes says:

I’d think it would be more than that, Knight.

  81. Wes says:

I wonder who does that voice, Knight.

  82. Wes says:

I already own a Kindle DX. (Now the bastards have put an international feature on the Kindle, but it only works on the regular one, damnit.) I’m getting a Nook for Christmas. I prefer the hardcover too, but I’ve fallen in love with my Kindle.

  83. Wes says:

Nevermind. I just looked it up. The face matches the voice:

    http://astore.amazon.com/liternet/detail/B002VXMLO2

  84. Wes says:

I guess everyone decided to leave me…

  85. KnightHawk says:

Wondering how long into the speech before I’m forced to turn it off?

  86. Brandon says:

    Norwood 51-49, book it.

  87. Wes says:

I wish Trolletta and Chekote would come back. Their feud about the Afghan War was classic if too brief.

  88. Wes says:

You owe me a ribeye cooked medium rare with double fries and a bottle of Bombay Sapphire if she loses, Brandon.

  89. Wes says:

Where’s LisaB to tell me how bad meat is for people?

  90. Brandon says:

As long as she gets 45% I will be right about that.

  91. Wes says:

I find that unlikely, Brandon–although more likely than her achieving a victory.

  92. rdelbov says:

yes this TN election should be a landslide for the GOP guy. Not only is the district heavily GOP, but there is an active GOP primary for the guy’s old state rep seat. Plus the GOP guy raised 250K while the democrat raised 10K

  93. Brandon says:

Is this speech really going to be an hour long?

  94. Wes says:

250K for a State Senate seat? Ay Dios Mio! What is this country coming to?

  95. KnightHawk says:

102 – I hope not, seems 20 minutes would be plenty, unless he’s going to go Ross Perot on us.

Over under on the number of self references or “I’s” ?

  96. KnightHawk says:

96 – It would not even be entertaining.

  97. KnightHawk says:

95 – Brandon once again I hope you are correct, I doubt it though.

  98. Wes says:

Do you think when Obama and Michelle are engaging in their marital duties, he has a mask of himself taped to both the front and back of her head?

  99. D QUIXOTE says:

Tape doesn’t stick very well to gunny sack.

  100. Wes says:

Then maybe the gunny sack has his face airbrushed onto it, DQ.

  101. KnightHawk says:

107 – Maybe not, but there are definitely lots of mirrors involved.

  102. D QUIXOTE says:

Might be a good t shirt logo.

  103. Wes says:

We’re so wrong for thinking that, guys.

  104. Wes says:

So, when do polls close in Atlanta?

  105. Brandon says:

    8 PM.

  106. Wes says:

Thanks, Brandon. That’s late for Georgia. During statewide elections, the polls close at 7. Trivia question for all of you: What were the very first two calls made on Election Night 2004?

  107. Brandon says:

    Indiana and Kentucky?

  108. Wes says:

    No, Brandon.

  109. Wes says:

Anyone else want to give it a shot?

  110. Wes says:

No, Knight. The first two calls that night were as follows:

George Bush carries the state of Georgia.

Johnny Isakson wins the Georgia Senate race.

Sheesh…I thought you guys were political junkies.

  111. wylie e. coyote - super genius says:

Here is the brutal truth about CrappyCare – it will get you killed sooner! Finally, a GOPer with the gonads to say!:

    http://apnews.excite.com/article/20091201/D9CAPP7G0.html

“A Republican senator contended Tuesday during rancorous floor debate that President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul will shorten the lives of America’s seniors by cutting Medicare.

“I have a message for you: You’re going to die sooner,” said Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., an obstetrician-turned-lawmaker.”

  112. Wes says:

After that came a flurry of states carried by either Bush or Kerry with the New Hampshire, Vermont, Maryland, and Indiana Senate races also called.

  113. Brandon says:

    I was 15 on election night 2004, I wasn’t really paying attention.

  114. Wes says:

Wilye, the Dems developed Mediscare in the ’90s. Now it’s coming back to bite them. Payback’s a bitch, motherf***ers!!!!

  115. Wes says:

I was 16 on Election Night 1994, Brandon, but I watched all the returns from 7 that night till 4:30 the next morning.

  116. KnightHawk says:

120 – Been a lot of Jack Danials under the bridge since then. ;)
Not a state I was paying attention too that night since both outcomes were known, as were a bunch of others.

  117. Wes says:

The one that really shocked me that night, Knight, (how’s that juxtaposition for irony?) was that West Virginia was called right out of the gate. That one I honestly never saw coming.

  118. KnightHawk says:

124 – Yeah kinda of turned that weapon around on them lately, however I wish the weapon it’s based on didn’t exist in the first place.

  119. Benny says:

when the polls in TN will close??

    Troletta you are fantastico

  120. KnightHawk says:

127 – That’s the one that put those that were still skittish at ease that night.

  121. KnightHawk says:

129 – Benny is a fan of socialism?

  122. Wes says:

I agree, Knight, but in politics as in texas Hold’em, you play the cards in your hand.

  123. Brandon says:

Hey, you guys are a good photo op.

  124. Wes says:

Benny’s a Dem who drifted somewhat rightward because of a dislike of Obama. He still thinks Bush stole Florida though.

  125. KnightHawk says:

Does this guy understand this war does not have an “ending”?

  126. Benny says:

    NO!!!!!!!!!!

    But a fan of HiLlary!!!

  127. Wes says:

What are you talking about, Brandon?

  128. Brandon says:

    New thread

  129. KnightHawk says:

136 – Oh so just socialism lite.

  130. Benny says:

    Hi wes

    bush didi it!!!

I am a conservative feminist democrat!!!

  131. Benny says:

but when will the polls close in TN???

  132. Wes says:

Actually, Benny, Bush genuinely won Florida. One initial count and a slew of recounts proved it.

  133. wylie e. coyote - super genius says:

#124 I would have added “broke, and in alot more pain!” – he is being a bit too kind to CrappyCare!

    Yeah, paypack sucks….

The D are as much trying to coverup the medical bankruptcy with CrappyCare as they NEED to have the control to RATION CARE since they dont have the guts to actually admit their ponzi scheme failed and ask for a honest, straight up tax increase on the short fall!

Yep, this is what happens when you “collectivize” your personal medical decsions – YOU DIE EARLY!

  134. Benny says:

    143-LOL

  135. Benny says:

Wes when will the polls in TN close??

  136. Wes says:

    I’m guessing 8:30 or 9, Benny.

  137. D QUIXOTE says:

I am a conservative feminist democrat!!!

    Comment by Benny

    Schizophrenia is treatable.

  138. Benny says:

    Thank you very much !!!

  139. sam says:

Actually, Bush would have won Florida 2000 quite comfortably, if not for those late vote dumps from Broward and the other two S Florida counties.

The Dem machine tried to punch boatloads of ballots at the last minute. (Hint, that is where the hanging chads came from.)

  140. Wes says:

Sam, most reputable estimates say Bush’s margin in Florida would ahve been in the 1000-1500 range without all the recount shenanigans and goings-on.

  141. Benny says:

but gore won the popular vote do you forgotten????

  142. KnightHawk says:

152 – We don’t elect presidents by pure popular vote.

  143. Karl R Rove says:

Not sure about this district, but anything outside of Nashville, especially in eastern Tenn., is GOP.

Plus, the Democrat has a hyphenated name, which leads me to suspect she is a sacrificial lamb. A hyphenated name in the South can barely go unnoticed in Demo districts in the South. It is pretentious. Even HRC got that message.

  144. Wes says:

Benny, presidential elections in the US are on a state-by-state basis. We don’t actually vote for President. We vote for the electors who vote for President. It doesn’t matter who wins the popular vote, although if the margin there is big enough, it will always translate into a victory in the Electoral College. Whether Gore won the popular vote or not is irrelevant. He didn’t win the Electoral College; therefore, he lost.

  145. Karl R Rove says:

    Benny = Loser.

  146. sam says:

Wes, I am not talking about recount of legally cast votes.

The Dems manufactured thousands of votes in the 3 counties (I can’yt recall the names of the counties, Broward was one) by sitting in the back rooms of precincts and punching stacks of unused ballots. The reason you saw those hanging chads in those counties was because, in the interest of time, they would take stacks of ballots at a time and try to punch through. They would get through the top 5-10, but only indent the bottom ballots.

  147. Benny says:

    I know

but do you really think somebody should be president if he lost the popular vote and if its so close in FL??

But I am agree with Wes Gore lost by himself cause he should win in TN and NH and WV
but he didnt-so its his own fault

  148. Benny says:

Karl you are not a gentlemen

  149. D QUIXOTE says:

but gore won the popular vote do you forgotten????

    Comment by Benny —

We not forgotten, we undertand the electoral college, you not no how him work.

  150. Wes says:

Yes, Benny. Everyone on here knows I’m no fan of Bush, but he won that election rightly. We can argue the winner of the popular vote shoudl be the President, but that’s an irrelevant argument because the overall popular vote is not how we elect our Presidents. Bush won the part of the election that counted despite its closeness; thus, he deserved to be President.

  151. D QUIXOTE says:

Beside the fact that algore is insane.

  152. Wes says:

Bush is also not the first President who won the presidency despite finishing second in the popular vote. John Quincy Adams did so after Henry Clay threw his support behind adams in 1824 and caused the House of Representatives to confirm Adams’ election. Rutherford B Hayes beat Sam Tilden after Dems and Republicans agreed to let Hayes take the presidency in exchange for a promise to end Reconstruction. Ben Harrison beat Grover Cleveland by narrowly edging Cleveland in several critical states even though Cleveland won the popular vote. Bush’s 2000 election was an anomaly, but it was hardly unprecedented.

  153. rdelbov says:

The GOP guy got 78% of the early vote.

    So this puppy is over

  154. Wes says:

    Good to know, Rdel.

  155. KnightHawk says:

“but do you really think somebody should be president if he lost the popular vote and if its so close in FL??”

    100% yes.

  156. Chekote says:

How was the speech. I just caught the beginning while driving to a meeting.
