Look Back At Last Night
Last night, Republicans managed to break even in the special elections in Missouri, winning the seat they had held while losing the one Democratic seat they were contesting. Republicans did manage to lose a seat in Kentucky they had held before the former seat holder won an election to the Kentucky State Senate. In Florida, the Special Election to fill the seat once held by Democratic Congressman Robert Wexler will come down to a match up between Republican Edward Lynch and Democrat Ted Deutch.
In Illinois, Mark Kirk and Alexi Giannoulias will be facing off to see who will get the US Senate seat once held by Barack Obama. Even in a state as blue as Illinois, this is a potential pick up for Republicans. The races for Governor have not been called and are extremely close. As of the time of this post, The Chicago Tribune shows sitting Democratic incumbent Pat Quinn with a lead of 7,202 votes out of almost 900,000 cast in the Democratic primary. On the Republican side, Bill Brady holds a lead of just 503 votes over Kirk Dillard and 8,032 votes over Andy McKenna out of 761,247 votes cast in the GOP primary.
One thing I found interesting is despite the heavy Democratic leanings of Illinois, the numbers of ballots cast in the GOP primary is much closer to the number of ballots cast in the respective Democratic primaries than I would have expected.

IRT IN Senate race, Dan Coats to challenge Bayh. We may have a winner.
Nice fast work Dave.
So- Who has feedback on Brady?
3. i was just going to post that…great news! the original contest had coats stayed in for the race in 98 may have been a much tougher win for him then what i believe 10 will be for him now.
I think Dillard may win.
Maelstrom you are big Mark Kirk Basher. Your posts at Freerepublic were awful.
Worry about your own state. IL is not Indiana
http://publicpolicypolling.blogspot.com/2010/02/warning-sign-in-illinois.html
Jason T- Kirk does suck, just less than the other guy.
Brandon, thanks for your IL info last night.
Seals winning in the IL-10 is a godsend for Dold.
Seals is Black, he is running in a 90% white District, and get this, does not live in the District.
He is a two time loser and very left wing. Hamos would have been a sure winner
Joes, I respect your opinion, but I live in IL and I know the score here.
Maelstrom and others know nothing about the Political realities in this state.
I am a Conservative NRA member, and Kirk is a Military man, who voted against Health Care. Hughes was a good guy but a sure GE loser

#11. Yeah, I really don’t see how Hughes would have had a shot.
True, but we are both midwesteners (stay the hell away from our walleyes, FIB) posting at a Maryland site. We can disagree, but we can have opinions. Attack his ideas, not his address.
And welcome to the site.
The Democrats nominated a Pawn Broker as their Lt.Governor in Il
Jones, I could argue with you any day, you are civil.
We’ll pick up another time.
I wonder if there’s enough precints left to count for Dillard to catch Brady.
Brandon, all the experts here are saying this morning that Taxes and the economy will be the main issues in the Fall.
I am still wary about Brady, but if he stays away from abortion, he should be OK.
Brandon, Nate Silver thinks Dillard could win by a single vote.
It will be a recount, unless Dillard takes the high Road
Jason T, I’m curious how you feel about Brady or Dillard being a stronger GE candidate? And for that matter, McKenna.
Also, do you have any idea how many absentee ballots still need to be counted?
I’m assuming that the race can be called for Quinn on the Dem side, but not for the GOP side.
The turnout for primaries is often a sign of how November will go. PPP has it right. The Dems should be worried about this result.
Wes – I think the GOP turnout in itself is a victory. And the fact that Kirk got more votes than Giannoulias.
Great news about Coats in IN. The GOP needed that after a series of recruitment failures up there. Now IN gets the clash of the titans it never had in ‘98.
I’m glad about the IN recruiting too, mostly because I would have worried about Bayh’s 15 million dollar warchest. Now it’s not being spent on other national Democrats. Thank God.
It portends bad things for the Dems in IL, Mark. For literally decades here in the South, Dems had massive primary turnout while GOP turnout was light. In recent years, that’s changed while the GOP has become competitive or dominant in much of the region. This result may not have far-reaching consequences, but it bodes well for this year.
There’s a new thread above if anyone is interested.
Coats also has a high enough profile not to have to introduce himself to the voters while being able to hammer Bayh on his recent voting record.
I don’t post at freestate and don’t know kirk. another guy with my handle
however, you’d be surprised about who I know in IL.
Maelstrom My apology.
I am grumpy because the Far Right is going after Kirk.
I understand their reasons, but do they want Alexi to win?
Jason. no problem. I’m a Dennis Miller conservative. I live in IN but my hometown is Spfld.
I am hopeing for a 3rd party canadate who is Pro-Life to run Mark Kirk is unacceptable and Dilliard would be unacceptable to me as well I hope Jason Plummer wins the Lt. Governors race and I praying Brady wins then that would be a strong ticket. I live near Indiana so I may work the elections there if Coats is in the race!!!
34: You are being very shortsighted. A Republican win in deep blue Illinois and Obama’s old seat to boot would be another earthquake of Massachusetts proportions and help control those Democratic troublemakers in Congress. We might actually be able to save the country that way!! Your way: Dems win again and the country continues to hit the skids.
Sorry!! But the Checked paints Republicans like Kirk and Dilliard just won’t cut it with me. Brown is much more conservative than Kirk. I don’t see a difference between Kirk or Giannoulias. I hope a 3rd party Pro Life canadate would run. I just hope Brady will win if Dilliard wins I would vote for Randall Stufflebeam the Constitution Party canadate. I don’t compromise my principals especially Moral Issues!! We need a real change not Democrat Lite!!!
36. “Jerry Bunu Withrow” is a Paulbot, not a Republican. Good luck with your next best candidate in lalaland, Randall Stufflebeam (an appropriate name for a cuckoo nut).
“I understand their reasons, but do they want Alexi to win?”
Don’t bother responding to Paulbots, they only have one allegiance, to their Furhrer.
I never said I was a Republican I’m a Independant and a strong Paleo Conservative!!! Randell Stufflebeam is a much better Gubenitorial canadate that Kirk Dilliard!!! There is no difference between Mark Kirk and Alex Giannoulias!! I hope Joe Scheidler or his son makes a Idependant run for the senate!!!!
If not the Schiedlers run I am hopeing Allen Keys takes a run as a Independant canadate. Anything is better than either Kirk or Giannoulias!!! Keyes or Schiedler sounds good to me!!!
