I know it sounds cliche, but I continue to be thankful for many of things that most people are thankful for. I am especially thankful I have a parents who support and love me unconditionally. I am thankful that I have a job that allows me to have a home and never have to worry about where my next meal is coming from.
And finally, I am thankful everyday to have met and to be engaged to a wonderful and supportive woman who has made my life better every day we have been together….
I wish everyone out there, especially those who unable or can’t be home with family or friends, a Happy Thanksgiving!

I thanked God that it was not as bad as it could have been. Please keep #2 son in prayers. Thanks.

I proffered this on another thread in regards to Delay’s conviction: isn’t the Texas law that Delay was found guilty of (banning corporations from sending campaign money directly) unconstitutional in light of SCOTUS Citizens United decision? It sounds to me like he may have grounds for an appeal.

Good news for Delay, appeals usually hang on misapplication of law, and that is the total foundation of the “novel” application of money laundering statue.
In Texas the Criminal Appeals court judges are all elected and of course all are Republicans. And that is before you get to the TX Supreme Court whic is also populated 100% with Republicans.
This travesty of justice will be overturned, and the liberals will not get the scalp they seek.

Gary, the TX supreme court would have no role in the DeLay case. The Ct of Criminal Appeals is the highest court for criminal cases.
Better to have the Delay verdict come after the election than before though at least.

Yes you are correct JIM the court of criminal appeals is the highest court for criminal matters, except for death penalty cases, which may be what threw me. But the occupants of those seats on the court, just like the Tx Supreme Court, are all Republicans. There is a lower court for appeals before you get to the Court of Criminal Appeals as well.
I am thankful I still have a house. My wife was heating butter in a pan to make cream puffs or some nonsense to bring to my brother in laws house tonight and left it unattended to talk to me upstairs.
She smelled smoke, ran down and saw flames, and then water on it. The flames shot up to the ceiling, I got the girls out of the house and then a miracle happened: it flamed out! If you could see my kitchen you would understand the extent of the miracle. My italian wife has all kinds of drapes and valiances and none caught on fire. The 1 area of the kitchen has singed a bit on the wall and ceiling. We were going to get it painted anyway.
Everyone is safe. I still have a house.

I think the Tea Party folks SHOULD go after corporate America (especially Wall Street and corporations like General Electric who bowed before BO’s agenda).
These folks have failed America (and I’ve worked on Wall Street for over 25 years). The only thing driving managements is next year’s bonus without regard to the impact these decisions will have on the future of the country. What’s especially galling about the recently enacted Dodd Frank bill is that it makes “too big to fail” our nation’s policy – enabling the folks who brought us the financial crisis carte blanche to do whatever they want in the knowledge that the government will bail them out. At the same time these new regulations will make it prohibitively expensive for start ups to flourish in the new world order.
As for firms like General Electric, their bet on a “green agenda” has blinded them to any anti-capitalist yearnings coming out of the White House.
…and they make those God-awful light bulbs that contain mercury while providing no light.

I actually pushed my 10 year ouf of the house and my 8 year old followed. I screamed “call 911″ but by the time I turned around and grabbed the fire extinquisher the flames had gone out.
Then my wife screams at me to run to the neighbors and tell them not to call 911. They basically will rip apart your house. I don’t them, it is their job. Anyway, I ran in my socks in 40 degree weather across a soaking wet lawn to the neighbors house. The girls were sobbing.

Update on son, 2nd degree burns only, might have to have skin graft on thumb, no scaring, should heal in about 2 months. They attended to him (I’ll leave out the medical details) and suprisingly allowed him to come back home today. But I have to do the 160 mile round trip to take him back down tomorrow, and then at least one other day next week.
I’ll still take all the prayers of intercession you can send his way for medical healing and perifferal non-medical issues.

From the perspective of my memory from December 1979 to June 1980.
Ronald Reagan certainly had the appearance of a great candidate but not a giant–certainly not head and shoulders above George Bush or so much better then even Howard Baker. Mind you Howard Baker was from here in TN and I was a fan/supporter of his senate run in 1978.
In 1980 Reagan lost the Iowa Straw poll/caucus to Bush41. He actually was nearly out of money for the NH primary and his campaign seemed to be heading down the tubes. He did look old and tired at one point in this effort but in 1980 there was a full month between Iowa & New Hampshire. Reagan’s personal campaigning-the Manchester Union newspaper’s constant drumbeat for him plus the debate (I paid for this microphone) ad lib turned it around.
So I am looking for a GOP contender in 2012 to rise to the occassion–it could be a retread or could be a newbie.
So people here actually get squemish when they see a woman clubbing a fish?
I think we’re getting a little wimpy as a society when even grown dudes are conceding that the idea of pounding a fish with a club is something they couldn’t do.

I think Marv is right. I think Jeb Bush will get into the race for two reasons. First, the current field is very weak and each of the top four candidates has severe flaws. Second, Obama is very beatable.
The second point is the most important point. If Jeb or someone like him wants to be president, waiting for 2016 may not be the right path. If Romney or Pawlenty wins, a guy like Jeb couldn’t run again until 2020. I don’t see him passing up this chance.
If unemployment stays near 9% and Obamacare remains very unpopular, Bush could cruise to the presidency and pull big gains in the Senate with him.
Looks more and more like Palin is going to run.

Very good summation. This History channel recently had “The Air War in HD” on. It dealt with the 8th Air Force bombing campaign in Europe from the beginning until the end. It was quite informative.

You’re making an assumption based on incorrect information. Nobody here knows how Reagan would have reacted or handled the ‘new media’ or social networking. We can guess individually that he may used it a lot, used very little or done a fifty-fifty style of approach.

Mass media attacks staged by students on him in their universities. And we mustn’t forget what the wonderful world of film & TV would do, SNL’s stuff would be tame compared to whatever BET would churn out against him.
In short you’re holding people upto a mythical standard that no longer exists using criteria that are out-dated now. Modern candidates have to be very careful about everyone now. It only takes one Cellphone camera/video to wreck a campaign as we all know.

Regardless of the poll, there are four top candidates for the Republicans. In no particular order, they are Romney, Palin, Gingrich, and Huckabee. Each has a serious flaw that makes it difficult to see them as national winners.
Romney – He has Romneycare to deal with. He flipped on many positions. Lost badly is a weak field in 2008.
Gingrich – He is a shameless self promoter. He was rolled by Clinton and was forced out of the Congress.
Huckabee – He is smooth talker, but was defeated in South Carolina because he wasn’t a true conservative. Other than life, his economic record is poor. I don’t see state he pulls away from Obama.
Palin – No need to explain. She is toxi to Indpendent voters. They are the ones who gave the party the big win in 2010.

I don’t have a problem with the fishing thing or hunting, for that matter. But then again I haven’t seen the show so I don’t know what all went on.
All I know is I watched the first episode of “Sarah Palin’s AK” and Palin whining about climbing the mountain came off very lame, her inability to control her children (on and off camera) was unattractive, etc. This didn’t help endear me to her at the end of the day. She’s overexposed and wearing on a lot of people who formerly had goodwill for her. I can only speak for myself and my immediate circle of friends/family of course.

Now personally, I think that the media absolutely loves Gov. Palin. She’s very atractive. She has a following, that translate into ratings points. She’s always good for a controversial comment, as Fox News found out just the other day. And, she has some political clout.
Why would they not love her?
I might add here that she certainly seems to love the media. Every time I turn on the tv, I can generally either find her, or some story about her, or a member of her family.

In the year and a half since she resigned, Palin has made at least 13 million dollars. And, she heavily used the media to help her do it.
I think this woman is having the time of her life.
Plus she got a little more credit (than I believe was deserved) on her performance helping GOP candidates win in November. They conveniently didn’t bash her for COD, Miller losing. But they made a big deal in the primary wins. The media generally pushed (and wants to continue to push) the meme that Palin is the kingmaker of the party.
The media definitely wants Palin to succeed in getting the GOP nomination and use her as the face of ignorance, racism and everything extreme right. Not saying that she is any of these things, just saying that the media understands the delicate balance and are tearing the conservative movement down very artfully.

The media hasn’t been able to win one round yet with her. She just pasted the Wall Street Journal on QE2 for God’s sake.
There’s a reason why the NYT article on her was fair and of good quality. She made them play by her terms. Where as most of the other candidates would have been only too happy to jump to their jump.
As for the Rock climbing, I thought it humanized her a great deal, I wouldn’t be surprised if she goes back and this time successfully climbs the rock with little help.
