Romney Leads in MI, Dominates in AZ (Plus National Polls)

Marist College becomes the latest pollster to give us new polls from Michigan and Arizona and the news is at least good for Mitt Romney in the Republican primary in Michigan.

Mitt Romney 37%
Rick Santorum 35%
Ron Paul 13%
Newt Gingrich 8%

Barack Obama (D-inc) 51%
Mitt Romney (R) 33%

Ron Paul (R) 31%

Barack Obama (D-inc) 55%
Rick Santorum (R) 29%

Debbie Stabenow (D-inc) 53%
Pete Hoekstra (R) 32%

This poll was done February 19-20 among 3149 registered voters and 1147 primary voters. The news is even better for Romney in the state of Arizona.

Mitt Romney 43%
Rick Santorum 27%
Newt Gingrich 16%
Ron Paul 11%

Mitt Romney (R) 45%
Barack Obama (D-inc) 40%

Barack Obama (D-inc) 45%
Newt Gingrich (R) 40%

Ron Paul (R) 43%
Barack Obama (D-inc) 41%

Rick Santorum (R) 45%
Barack Obama (D-inc) 42%

Jeff Flake (R) 42%
Richard Carmona (D) 29%

This poll was done February 19-20 among 2487 registered voters and 987 primary voters. Late yesterday, Public Policy Polling also released new numbers for the US Senate race in Arizona showing Jeff Flake and Wil Cardon both leading Richard Carmona and Don Bivens.

Jeff Flake (R) 46%
Richard Carmona (D) 35%

Wil Cardon (R) 37%
Richard Carmona (D) 33%

Jeff Flake (R) 46%
Don Bivens (R) 35%

This poll was done February 17-19 among 732 registered voters. Now some national polling from Quinnipiac University.

Rick Santorum 35%
Mitt Romney 26%
Newt Gingrich 14%
Ron Paul 11%

Barack Obama (D-inc) 46%
Mitt Romney (R) 44%

Barack Obama (D-inc) 47%
Rick Santorum (R) 44%

Barack Obama (D-inc) 50%
Newt Gingrich (R) 39%

This poll was done February 14-20 among 2605 registered voters and 1124 primary voters. Meanwhile, the Associated Press and GfK show a bigger lead for Obama over the Republican field.

Rick Santorum 33%
Mitt Romney 32%
Newt Gingrich 15%
Ron Paul 15%

Barack Obama (D-inc) 51%
Mitt Romney (R) 43%

Barack Obama (D-inc) 52%
Rick Santorum (R) 43%

Barack Obama (D-inc) 52%
Newt Gingrich (R) 42%

This poll was done February 16-20 among 1000 adults. The “adults” instead of “registered voters” is probably why the margins are much greater in this poll for Obama.

That should be enough to get you started this morning….

“Satan has his sights on the United States of America!” Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum has declared.

“Satan is attacking the great institutions of America, using those great vices of pride, vanity, and sensuality as the root to attack all of the strong plants that has so deeply rooted in the American tradition.”

    Rick Santorum

  6. Tim V says:

Satan has even invaded HHR, posting several times. Susyque was unable to perform an exorcism. Maybe Rick can drive him away.

  7. SUSYQUE says:

#9…Tim V…. please do not use my name in your endeavor to be humorous. Our focus should not be on satan. Greater is He who is in us, than he that is in the world. Grace (mercy) trumps Evil.

  8. Waingro says:

The Santo surge in Mich is over. Mitt needs a great debate performance tonight to try and secure it.

  9. SUSYQUE says:

#9…Tim V…I believe you already know this, but we need to refocus on winning this election. It is not a religious endeavor, except in our personal prayers. It is a secular endeavor that must encompass all ethnicities-races in this country. The diversity in this country is one facet of its strength. We all need to be of one mind in the election of 2012.

  10. Waingro says:

Santo attacking Drudge is not smart. Drudge helped BURY Newt not that long ago.

  11. Santo says:

Satan has been here ? > spinkles some holy water around

hopefully, that will keep him away at least until noon.

  12. Tim V says:

Waingro, Drudge is very powerful. He will destroy Santorum.

OK, here’s the deal. I will ignore your posts and you can ignore mine. I will avoid mentioning your name and you can do the same for me. Fair enough ?

  14. Tim says:

Personally, I think that Sen. Santorum saying that Satan is at war with America is humorous………

and, a dumb thing to say.

  17. SUSYQUE says:

#17…Tim V…sorry you feel that way.

  18. bio mom says:

Dave, You mean to say Arizona instead of Michigan in the Marist poll with Romney up big over Santorum??

I notice that the national polls showing Santorum furthest ahead spanned more of the time frame before he started spouting off about his social beliefs and before they started being publicized.

  19. Barrett says:

Good to see Anti-mormon bigotry is not as strong in these polls as it previously was

Please allow me to introduce myself
I’m a man of wealth and taste
I’ve been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man’s soul and fate

I was ’round when Jesus Christ
Had his moments of ‘doubt’ and pain
    Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate

    Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
    But what’s puzzling you
Is the nature of my game

    I stuck around St. Petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the Czar and his ministers
    Anastasia screamed in vain

    I rode a tank
    Held a General’s rank
    When the Blitzkrieg raged
    And the bodies stank

    Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
    What’s puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah

    I watched the glee
    While your kings and queens
    Fought for ten decades
    For the gods they made

    I shouted out
    “Who killed the Kennedys?”
    Well after all
    It was you and me

    Let me please introduce myself
I’m a man of wealth and taste
And I laid traps for troubadours
Who get killed before they reached Bombay

    Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
    But what’s puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah

    Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
    But what’s confusing you
Is just the nature of my game, ooh yeah

Just as every cop is a criminal
    And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails just call me Lucifer
I’m in need of some restraint

So if you meet me, have some courtesy
Have some sympathy and some taste
Use all your well learned politics
Or I’ll lay your soul to waste, mmm yeah

    As time keeps slipping away
I can imitate your brightest light
And make your night look just like day
I put some truth in every lie
    To tickle itching ears
You know I’m drawing people just like flies
‘Cause they like what they hear

I’m gaining power by the hour
    they’re falling by the score
You know, it’s getting very simple now
‘Cause no one believes in me anymore

Oh, heaven’s just a state of mind
My books read on your shelf
And have you heard that “God is dead”
I made that one up myself
    They dabble in magic spells
    They get their fortunes read
You know they heard the truth
But turned away and followed me instead

I used to have to sneak around
But now they just open their doors
You know, no one’s watching for my tricks
Because no one believes in me anymore

    Everyone likes a winner
With my help, you’re guaranteed to win
And hey man, you ain’t no sinner
    You’ve got the truth within
And as your life slips by
You believe the lie that you did it on your own
    But don’t worry
I’ll be there to help you share our dark eternal home

Oh, my job keeps getting easier
    As day slips into day
    The magazines, the newspapers
    Print every word I say
This world is just my spinning top
    It’s all like childs-play
You know, I dream that it will never stop
But I know it’s not that way

Still my work goes on and on
    Always stronger than before
I’m gonna make it dark before the dawn
Since no one believes in me anymore
Well now I used to have to sneak around
But now they just open their doors

  67. Barrett says:

#68 – Huh? Who is the bully?

  68. Robbie says:

It’s probably a cliche to say this, but tonight is the most important debate of Romney’s career. He’s got a touch of momentum and, if he performs well tonight, he’ll win Michigan. That would help on Super Tuesday as well.

On the other hand, a bad performance by Romney could end his attempt to win the nomination. A poor perfromance would likely mean Santorum wins Michigan and that would also likely mean a bad Super Tuesday as well.

Regardless, it’s hard to think of a nominee who had such a tough time winning over the base and then went on to win the general election. I’m pretty sure there hasn’t been one.

  69. DW says:

Pawlenty has to feel really dumb for having dropped out. It seems that he didn’t really need any money at all, and he still could have had a decent shot at being the anti-Romney.

I will vote GOP, whomever the nominee is.

If you go to , you will notice the lead entry is the drudge/satan story and a huge number of blogs are discussing it.

Stacy McCain was a Cain supporter who then switched to Santorum. He writes at his own blog, the othermccain, and also at the American Spectator.

Here is a small piece from his American Spectator article…

One look at the Electoral College map should make clear why, despite their description of Santorum as the “weaker” Republican candidate, Team Obama may be especially worried about his potential strengths as an opponent in the fall campaign. The so-called Rust Belt states — from Santorum’s home state of Pennsylvania, across West Virginia and Ohio all the way west to Wisconsin, Minnesota — are home to many millions of those “white, blue-collar voters” and Santorum has indeed shown an ability to connect with that “disillusioned” population. These are Americans who were notoriously described by Obama in April 2008: “They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”

most catholics at hhr have expressed a dislike for santorum strong emphasis on social issues so I’m not sure how well Rick would play with Catholics, especially Catholic women. If Annie and lisab are any indication, then not too well.

  76. Apologetic California says:

The base went for Taft and the moderates went for Eisenhower. Delegates were essentially split down the middle, until Earl Warren dropped out and pledged California’s delegates to Eisenhower, who then went on to win the election.

  83. Apologetic California says:

PPP(D) has California dead last, way last in state favorability ratings.

Americans generally have a favorable view of most states. Only five are in negative territory, led by California (27% favorable and 44% unfavorable), Illinois (19-29), New Jersey (25-32), Mississippi (22-28), and Utah (24-27). Only seven other states have net-positive ratings in the single digits, and another breaks even (Louisiana).
54% see Hawaii positively and only 10% negatively, followed in the top ten by Colorado (44-9), Tennessee (48-14), South Dakota (42-8), Virginia (45-13), Montana (39-7), Alaska (46-17), Oregon (43-14), and North Carolina and Pennsylvania (each 40-11). Ten others are in positive territory by at least 21 points.

  85. Bitterlaw says:

Obama says he is a Christian. Does anybody else find it ironic that SUSYQUE often talks about how she is born again and was drawn to Christ but cuts and pastes some internet hit-piece about Obama’s religion. I can disagree with his interpretation that Jesus wants a higher tax rate but I reject this “Obama is a Muslim” junk. My sister-in-law was raised Jewish and converted to Christianity. Should I call her a liar? Obama’s middle name is Hussein. Mine is Gerard. Who cares?

  86. SUSYQUE says:

#84…This is not about “Muslim crap” It is about ooo’s insensitivity toward Israel and the United States concerning the threat of war.

  87. Fly on the Wall says:

Shame on our candidates if they fail to bring THIS up during the debate.

Obama’s budget plan would hurt retirees badly in the pocketbook. There goes Florida.

Who would get hurt? IRS data show that retirees and near-retirees who depend on dividend income would be hit especially hard. Almost three of four dividend payments go to those over the age of 55, and more than half go to those older than 65, according to IRS data.

But all American shareholders would lose. Higher dividend and capital gains taxes make stocks less valuable. A share of stock is worth the discounted present value of the future earnings stream after taxes. Stock prices would fall over time to adjust to the new after-tax rate of return. And if investors become convinced later this year that dividend and capital gains taxes are going way up on January 1, some investors are likely to sell shares ahead of paying these higher rates.

The question is how this helps anyone.

and the answer is- it doen’t.

  88. SUSYQUE says:

#84.. I do not speak of ooo’s religion in post #83…but rather his sensitivities (responsiveness to external stimuli)which lean away from Israel.

  89. DW says:

Under Dave Wissing’s pollwatch Romney v Obama page, he continues to show VA in Obama’s column despite the poll from Christopher Newport University showing Romney in the lead. I am going to hold vigil over this until he fixes it.

Hopefully this vigil will not last as long as the one we held here in 2010 waiting for the RNSC to acklnowledge that Marco Rubio existed.

Interesting example, but did Ike run in the primaries?

  91. Sarah Palin says:

dave, leave it the way it is. I enjoy seeing Daryle get all wee-weed up over this.

  92. SoHope says:

Scott Brown Surges in MA. Up 9 points overall and 32 points with independents.

  93. Robbie says:

I just looked it up and Ike did run in the primaries. Still, I don’t think it’s the best comparison, but it is interesting.

  94. Fact Checker says:

#84.. I do not speak of ooo’s religion in post #83

I just use secular words like: Islamic, Madrassa, and refer to a few Islamic countries. Obviously, I’m NOT talking about religion.

  95. Barrett says:

I don’t give a flying fuqq what religion Obama is. What I care about is the following

    -a balanced budget
    -a surplus, not a deficit
    -Obamacare repealed
    -abortion outlawed
    -1st amendment rights protected

I don’t care if Papa fuqqin Smurf is the president, I just want us going in the right direction. Let him sing to the ayatollahs for all I care

  96. Bitterlaw says:

What will SUSYQUE post about me if I ever run for President:

    1. Fact – Prior to St. Patrick’s conversion of Ireland, his ancestors were druids.

    2. Fact – His middle name is Gerard.

    3. Fact – His wife is Jewish.

    4. Fact – A gay man attended his mother’s wake.

    5. Fact – He walked through the Occupy Philadelphia.

    6. Fact – He once owned a sweater.

  97. Barrett says:

#91 – Susy, Bitter may have the rights to name the daily favorite of evangelicals.

However, I hold the right to label the least favorite.

Currently, you are scoring very low.

  98. SoHope says:

I agree, Obama is very weak on Israel and very naive on the middleast and foreign policy in general. Muslim talk is just as damaging to us as birther talk.

  103. Annie says:

Of course, it will be the Quinnipiac poll that all the media will quote – it goes along with their narrative of “Romney in trouble” and “a brokered convention.”

As for Santorum stating that his “Satan” comment is not relevant – It’s just as relevant, if fact more so, than Romney’s Mormonism. Santorum is a fire and brimstone guy, who pushes his religious beliefs into the public arena. Other than saying he is true to his faith, Romney has never tried to use his religion in any way in governance or policy. How many citizens of Massachusetts became Mormons because of their governor? Probably none. Was Mormonism brought up when deciding Massachusetts policy? Never. However, Santorum does bring up his version of Christianity at every turn, and it has greatly influenced his legislative history.

  104. Franklin Graham says:

I agree with Susy. I’m not saying Obama is a Muslim but due to his actions, I’m not certain he is a Christian, of course he says he is so I’ll just have to take him at his word but you know…

  105. DW says:

If I ever ran for POTUS:

Fact: Openly rooted for Mookie Wilson in Game 6 of the 1986 world series.

Fact: Was born and raised in liberal New York State

Fact: Used to enjoy spending time in liberal Madison, WI

Fact: In 1996 worked the phones in support of RINO Bob Dole

Fact: Went to a fundamentalist Christian college.

Fact: Refuses to say what his middle name is.

Fact: Grandfather descended from pacifist German immigrants.

  106. Labigot says:

How many citizens of Massachusetts became Mormons because of their governor?

Are you sure it didn’t spread , just a little ?

  107. SoHope says:

Franklin Graham looked bad on Morning Joe. I saw the clip and they were like parinahs…especially at the end when they asked if Newt and Santorum were Christians and he said yes, of course.

    – was a Unitarian, now a Christian Methodist
    – libertarian on many issues
    – Maryland A-Hole

    – Family of Immigrants (Irish need not apply)

  111. Corey says:

There was a time when my middle name would have been a huge political plus for an Illinois Republican.

    Now, not so much.

  112. Bitterlaw says:

  113. SUSYQUE says:

#90…I do not speak of ooo’s religion in post #83…but rather his sensitivities (responsiveness) which leans away from Israel and the USA.
Cool off Bitter and stop knocking whatever I have said about Christian my beliefs. You have a penchant for seeing me in the worst light possible. Your mind acts like a steel-trap, always ready to jump onwhat I say to stir up trouble. I do not wish to be your foe, but your HHR friend.

  114. Corey says:

FACT: I can hold my breath for 38 seconds.

FACT: I went to a fundamental Christian college that probably considered DW’s college to be too liberal.

  117. Bitterlaw says:

SUSYQUE – the first 3 posts in 84 were about Obama’s muslim ties. Deny it all you want.

  118. SUSYQUE says:

  119. SoHope says:

Bitter, they aren’t that type of lesbians, unfortunately.

  120. Bitterlaw says:

I don’t eat onions or breakfast.

Thank you for reading my blog Susy. It’s always linked here. I have an entry about Presidential politics every Saturday and soon, I will start covering American Idol Season 11. I know that MD is a secret reader.

  122. SUSYQUE says:

#123…I did not write what the post said. It was written by a Jewish man, Howard Galganov, who lives in Canada and was concerned about ooo leanings and unconcern for Israel and the USA in the coming war.

  123. SoHope says:

My Grammy saved up all their life for that doublewide. They happiest day of her life is when they removed the hitch & axles and put it on a brick foundation.

  124. Bitterlaw says:

Hope – I have several case involving cleaning service employees who were hurt on the job. In PA, workers compensation is openly hostile to employers. Below a certain income level, an injured worker can get 90% of their pre-injury pay tax-free. The top rate is 2/3 of the average weekly wage up to approx. $900 per week tax free. There is a cap on wages – the injured worker earning $200k per year gets the same comp as the person earning $90k. That’s why high earners do not sit around waiting for checks for as long as lower wage earners.

  125. SUSYQUE says:

#127…Corey…I will look for the Saturday postings. Am into presidential politics but never have had an interest in American Idol. Perhaps, I will read what you write to see what I am missing. Thanks!

I had never heard this either, but I read this week that they were GOP affiliated.

  135. SoHope says:

  137. jan says:

Corey what’s you take on Santorums implosion and what do you think he will do tonight?

  138. Corey says:

What are the chances Santorum debates tonight with the ashes on his forehead?

  139. Bitterlaw says:

It is, Corey. I’m sorry I called you an onion bagel lover.

  140. Bitterlaw says:

Santorum will show up with professionally applied ashes on his forehead. They will be darker than the black under a baseball player’s eyes.

  141. Barrett says:

#122 – The most damnable of those is that you like Captain Johnathan Archer

  142. Labigot says:

During the introduction, Santorum should do the “tebowing” pose.

  143. Waingro the RINO says:

Today is indeed Ash Wednesday, and I would not all be surprised to see Santorum with ashes on his forehead.

While this shouldn’t mean anything to his favorability one way or another, I do think that this could unfairly turn off a bunch of secular moderates/indies when the pics of the debate go viral.

  144. Barrett says:

During the introduction to the debates, Santorum might as well smack his wife and his daughter.

  145. SoHope says:

season 3 & 4 were pretty good, Barrett

  146. jan says:

Anyone see Sarah Palin on Hannity last night? Awful, she’s comparing the treatment she got in the media to the one Santorum is getting.

Sorry about that. I’m too lazy to retype it.

  148. SoHope says:

Santorum adviser: “Why is Mormonism off limits?”

  149. Waingro the RINO says:

#136, look for Barry’s approvals to be similar to that in Gallup today as well. For some reason, the only poll in which he remains stagnant near 50% is Ras.

  150. Waingro the RINO says:

#153, well he certainly will get Palinized AND THEN SOME if he becomes the nominee.

  151. Corey says:

Well, ok, I was saying that I think Santorum is being hurt by all this focus on him and that these issues will be discussed tonight. Still, I do not think anything too dramatic is likely to happen in this final debate.

Hopefully, Romney can go 2 for 2 next week, but if not, it’s just going to take a bit more time for this all to sink with people.

  152. Barrett says:

#158 – I think Santorum and Romney will be at each others throats.

Romney’s got plenty of ammunition here

  153. jason says:

    I confess. I’m a Log Cabin Republican.

  154. Waingro the RINO says:

#159, Mitt needs to pound away tonight on the numerous spending and earmark provisions Santo voted on as a Senator.

I’m sure Santo will come back with something pointing to Romneycare and “Mitt supported TARP!!”, but I think Mitt has the winning hand in this fiscal argument.

  155. DaveyJ says:

Fox News did a story this morning on how, in the latest Gallup national poll, Santorum is beating Romney by 10% — among women!

  156. Corey says:

Will there be any reference made in the debate tonight to the …. Sun Devils?

  157. DaveyJ says:

My grandparents are buried in the city where the debate will be, Mesa.

  158. Waingro the RINO says:

#162, yeah, then if you include indies and moderates in such a poll Romney probably CRUSHES Santo in women demographic.

  159. Tim says:

    Alas, I am similarly screwed in a POTUS race;

    1. Fact – Many of my ancestors were Serbs and did not put up with thier uppity Muslim neighbours.

    2. Fact – I’m Catholic, though that doesn’t seem to be hurting sancto right now. I’ll up the ante; I am a lapsed Catholic, compounded by the next fact…

    3. Fact – My wife is Jewish.

    4. Fact – I have gay friends, one of whom even has the “High Five.”

    5. Fact – I’ve never been to a Tea Party rally (they were hard to find in Hawaii).

    6. Fact – I own a collection of sweaters…all of them cashmere.

    7. Fact – I guzzle wine like there is no tomorow, and am also allergic to beer due to the wheat factor.

    8. Fact – I voted illegally for Ronald Reagan (went into the booth with my mother and pulled the lever).

    9. Fact – I lived an hour from Mecca for nearly a decade; surely, like some residents of MA with their mormon governor, some of that religion seeped into my very soul.

  164. SUSYQUE says:

Obama’s Dividend Assault Coming WSJ Article

President Obama’s 2013 budget is the gift that keeps on giving—to government. One buried surprise is his proposal to triple the tax rate on corporate dividends, which believe it or not is higher than in his previous budgets.

Who would get hurt? IRS data show that retirees and near-retirees who depend on dividend income would be hit especially hard. Almost three of four dividend payments go to those over the age of 55, and more than half go to those older than 65, according to IRS data.
Mr. Obama is proposing to raise the dividend tax rate to the higher personal income tax rate of 39.6% that will kick in next year. Add in the planned phase-out of deductions and exemptions, and the rate hits 41%. Then add the 3.8% investment tax surcharge in ObamaCare, and the new dividend tax rate in 2013 would be 44.8%—nearly three times today’s 15% rate.

Keep in mind that dividends are paid to shareholders only after the corporation pays taxes on its profits. So assuming a maximum 35% corporate tax rate and a 44.8% dividend tax, the total tax on corporate earnings passed through as dividends would be 64.1%.

We all have choices in this life. Nowhere in the bible does it say I should hate gays or treat them unkindly or be disrespectful to them. I personally could not live that lifestyle and they cannot live mine.

Romney is going to address the Detroit Economic Club on Friday at Ford Field. Here he intends to introduce a broader economic plan which goes into entitlement reform. Per Larry Kundow, who was given a preview of the plan, it also emphasizes a greater supply side economics, similar to Reagan. It will be interesting if he refers to any of this during tonight’s debate.

Santorum has already addressed this same club, earlier, and was said to have given an unimpressive presentation.

  181. GF says:

Episcopalians…I take it you mean “Catholic lite,” Bitter.

I would not be surprised if Orthodox churches do it as well, though they made a big stink about the icons, so ashes may be have been a bridge too far for them as well.

Corey – Why are Jews obsessed with shiny decorations?

  186. GF says:

Corey, I see that Kinzinger has a big lead over Manzullo; any chance he retires to save face?

  187. baptists aren’t christians per se.

  188. Bitterlaw says:

Which Christianb faiths that abandonned Mother Church give out ashes? Is that better?

  189. GF says:

That’s pretty funny, BL. My Mother in Law does not hold up those traditions, sadly; I have to settle for Latkes in December. Did you in-laws have clear plastic over their couches and chairs? I used to see that all the time in the 80s.

  190. phoenixrisen says:

why is it that when Romney gets his footing that he says something flat out stupid by tacking left. And at a campaign stop in Arizona no less.

Romney has a refreshing free market vision for restoring the nation’s prosperity. He sees a return to our entrepreneurial roots, freeing individuals to reach for their dreams, take risks and strive for gain with minimal government encumbrances.
He would reverse the rush toward a government-controlled economy and allow the free marketplace to do what it has always done — pull the nation back to its feet.

Bitter, I had never made the connection before between Jews and shiny things. I do not know that most Jewish Americans tend to gravitate towards “modern” in their decorating taste, and there could be a sociological aspect to that, related to the shiny thing.

It was hard to keep things shiny when you were wandering for 40 years in the desert.

A panel of Georgia lawmakers would have the power to review federal law and declare it illegal under a proposal in the state Senate.
    Enlarge photo

Sen. John Albers, R-Roswell, has sponsored a bill that would allow a panel of Georgia lawmakers to declare federal laws illegal.

Senate Resolution 889 would create a “joint commission on recommendation” to advise on which federal laws infringed on the state. If approved by two-thirds of the General Assembly, Georgia residents would be exempted from following them.

Sponsored by state Sen. John Albers, R-Roswell, the proposal would also force lawmakers to “adopt and enact any and all measures that may become necessary to prevent the wrongful enforcement of any federal laws or regulations duly nullified within the boundaries and limits of this state.”

The measure has the backing of the Senate’s top two leaders — President Pro Tem Tommie Williams, R-Lyons, and Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers, R-Woodstock — who have signed on as co-sponsors.

“The federal government has excessively abused the authority of state and local governments for some time,” Albers said, explaining why he sponsored the proposal.

SR 889 has been assigned to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
