Romney Within 2% of Obama in “Swing States”

A good way to come back from the weekend off with a new “Swing State” poll from USA Today and Gallup showing Mitt Romney has closed what was a 9% deficit in the states of Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin down to a mere 2%.

Barack Obama (D-inc) 47%
Mitt Romney (R) 45%

This poll was done April 26-May 2 among 951 registered voters in the states mentioned above. By the way, in the Gallup Daily Tracking Poll, Mitt Romney has moved back into the lead.

PRESIDENT – NATIONAL (Gallup Tracking)
Mitt Romney (R) 46%
Barack Obama (D-inc) 45%

This edition of the poll was done May 1-5.

Hey, if the Orioles’ Designated Hitter can pitch anf manage to record a win as a pitcher, then Mitt Romney can beat Barack Obama no matters the odds….

What happened to Hope? Why I was just speaking to her not more than 10 minutes ago. Was it an accident? I do hope she is all right.

  4. Ted O says:

In Naples, FL for some family fun….I can’t believe the number of Obama and Romney ads on TV! The campaign has truly started. Obama’s ads are poorly done and ineffective to Romney’s!! Romney hitting very hard on wasted dollars on Solyndra and the like!

  5. Walt says:

Did Hope sign a “Do Not Resuscitate” document?

  6. Ted O says:

Since I am from AZ, I have not seen any campaign ads since our primary in February…very strange to see them before the conventions!!

  7. Hmmm says:

this poll is within the moe and it includes states like: colorado, michigan, new mexico, pennsylvania and wisconsin?

shouldn’t obama be up big with those states included?

  8. lisab says:

“As did the last part of my comment about the “French fried Sarkozy.”

they don’t have french fries in france, they have pommes frites

  9. Hmmm says:

btw, this poll was done before the horrible jobs report.

  10. lt says:

Even a Yankee fan appreciates a good thing, I heard it was two innings pitched with no runs scored and two strikeouts and he got the win. Romney can win

  11. lisab says:

when you consider that PA and MI are probably +5% obama at least

romney is looking very good to be only down 2%

  12. Senator COD a/k/a Bitterlaw says:

Wow. The Flyers suck almost as bad as the St. Louis Blues. Almost. The Blues were a higher seed and were swept. The Flyers at least have 1 win so far.

  14. Walt says:

    Money quotes in article:

“Obama has the softer image dimensions tied up: He’s likable, compassionate, feels your pain, relates, understands,” says Frank Newport, Gallup’s editor in chief.
Voters see Romney as an “efficient manager” to handle the economy with “a more Darwinian approach,” Newport says. “He’s less interested in feeling your pain than telling you how to fix your pain by … doing something about it.”

  15. Hmmm says:

maybe the polling sample is too small?

  16. Walt says:

Quit digging. You only get deeper in the hole.

    I said nothing about potatoes.

  17. SusyQue says:

    Another Party?
Gary Johnson was nominated by the Libertarian Party to be its presidential candidate. This is important because that means Johnson, the former Republican Governor of New Mexico, will be on the ballot in all 50 states.
If there is a growing “I Don’t Like Anybody Very Much” sentiment among voters, it will be interesting to see from whom Johnson draws more votes.
    California needs to turn red.
Over three quarters of a million Californians out of work and out of benefits cannot be a good thing for incumbents of either party there.

  18. lisab says:

“Voters see Romney as an “efficient manager” to handle the economy with “a more Darwinian approach,”

    a darwinian approach?

he is going to go to the galopagos?

  19. Hmmm says:

i think johnson pulls some of the youth vote from the dems.

    I was in the pool!

Everything is using a RV screen right now (except Ras). Watch a magical bump for Romney as it becomes an LV screen come November.

Romney’s where he needs to be to win.

Obama has the economy of Carter and the poll numbers of Ford. Just be careful of mass fraud through early voting on the part of Democrats and the GOP will win and clean up Obama’s mess.

  26. Phil says:

“Romney is where he needs to be to win”

    Exactly. i like his position.

China apparently had some decent numbers which is good for everybody.

The hammering of oil on Friday and tonight would seem to indicate that the market is finally awakening to worldwide slowdown.

  34. MD says:

Hong Kong and Japan stock markets down 2.5%. US futures down sharply. Europe is going to explode. Germany gave away billions for nothing. The Euro will dissolve completely now. There really is no other option and quite honestly probably never was once they let it go on so long.

All hell is about to break loose. Now would be the time to be afraid.

  37. Bitterlaw says:

How was the softball game, MD?

  38. lisab says:

why can’t germany and france prop up greece?

  39. Walt says:

Why would there be a worldwide economic slowdown?

Obammer policies are working 24/7 to boost other countries economies.

–sending off-shore oil driling rigs to Brazil.

–Government Motors opening new car factories in China

–sending millions to the Muslim Brotherhood

  40. MD says:

Great. Won 15 to 7. Non-league game though.

  41. MD says:

France is broke and the citizens of Germany are ready tore lot over th endless $ being paid to other countries. There tax payers have to pick up the tab.

Now with France going Obama, all Hell will break loose. This is going to be an unforgettable summer for a lot of reasons.

  42. MD says:

Ready to go nuts. Auto correct on iPhone.

  43. MD says:

Wonder if Germany is thinking about increasing it’s military? Who would stop them?

  44. Bitterlaw says:

MD- Do the girls pitch? We start that in 2 weeks. I think I have 3 out of 13 girls who can do it.

  45. MD says:

The girls pitch until they walk 3 batters and then get 3 balls on a 4th hitter. Then the coach pitches to that batter. The girl pitches again until 3 balls. When the coach has to pitch the girl can’t walk.

  46. MD says:

  47. janz says:

#35 MD, I was wondering how today’s election would effect world markets. Apparently, according to your post, not good.

    These are uncertain times…..

  48. Walt says:

France’s problems are easy to solve.

All they have to do is call Obammer and get him to loan them some money to get them through this “little problem” they got themselves into.

I’d say about $10 trillion U.S. dollars would solve France’s problems for a couple of years before they have to come back for more.

Jayson Werth has a broken wrist. He missed an entire year (2006) with that injury. Awful.

What do you do to an elephant with 3 balls?

Walk him and pitch to the zebra. Zing.

  51. Vito-San says:

Baseball wrong… man with four balls cannot walk.

  52. lisab says:

it would seem like the cost of bailing out greece by paying down their debt by say 200 billion euros

would be less than a meltdown of the euro

  54. Mrs. MD says:

Bitterlaw – Can you please ask MD to not wear his Philly A-hole jacket to our daughter’s games? It’s embarassing. The sock puppet is bad enough.

  55. Mr. Vito says:

Hey! I’m there to support the team! I’ve only been ejected once… and that umpire had it in for me.

  56. Diogenes says:

The Euro will fall apart because the political will is not there. The PIIGS need to spin off from the Euro and depreciate their currency. No democracy can stomach 25% unemployment. It is ironic because many of the austerity measures are good for Greece in the long term, ridding them off their ridiculous graft-based government industries.

At any rate, the Euro will be proven the failure that it is; akin to the United States incorporating South America into its federal union and sharing its currency with them. You can’t have third-world countries sharing a currency and government with first-world countries. Especially when those first-world countries have medium sized economies and empty treasuries from socialism.

I do not share MD’s immediate pessimism. There are still ways to kick the can down the road, but the timeline for Euro collapse is accelerated.

  57. Cory says:

With these 12 ‘swing states’ excluded, Obama leads 196-191. So, Romney and Obama should be about even in these states (in a close election).

I don’t think Wisconsin, New Mexico, Michigan, and North Carolina are ‘swing states’, but whatever.

  58. Dylan says:

Not time to short the euro yet, Dioogenes?

  60. lisab says:

well the 9/11 suspects are getting a more than fair trial under obama

they just got the leader of the alqaeda cole strike by a drone yesterday

  61. Tim V says:

lisa, have you had your grits today ?

  62. Tim V says:

alqaeda has an american captive that they will kill unless obama ends drone strikes.-see right scoop

  63. Tim V says:

my guess is the dow drops 130 points plus or minus 50 today.

  64. Tim V says:

In France, and in Greece, the anti-austerity backlash has achieved a double victory this weekend, bringing closer the point at which the euro breaks asunder.

Continued German support for the single currency relies on acceptance of the austerity imposed by the fiscal compact. Both France and Greece have now resoundingly rejected the old political consensus, making the future of the single currency more uncertain than ever.

  65. Tim V says:

i know some of you are up but your waiting for dave to put up a new thread at 730am.

  66. SoHope says:

According to that poll the swing states will be split romney should win FL NC NH OH VA and obama win MI NM WI PA

In the middle is CO IA

  67. MD says:

    Trouble ahead, trouble behind….

  68. SoHope says:

    And NV is with obama

  69. lt says:

That split woould mean, and I agree with that split, that Romney has to win one of the two, the poll in Iowa[ 2 months old] has Romney up 2 while the last poll of C
    O is tied

  70. Tim V says:

In the middle is CO IA

regardless of that poll, i would say ohio at best for romney is in the middle, I would think VA also in the middle. Romney has been gaining groung lately and that is encouraging.

  71. Tim V says:

Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average /quotes/zigman/8750834 DJM2 -0.43% fell 50 points, or 0.4%, to 12,907, trimming earlier, deeper losses.

    S&P 500 Index futures /quotes/zigman/900181 SPM2 -0.48% lost 6 points to 1,356.50, while Nasdaq 100 futures /quotes/zigman/4225619 NDM2 -0.40% dropped 12 points to 2,613.50.

  72. SoHope says:

What was the anti- MI, NM, PA, NV, WI in that poll? If it is tied then it looks very good for Romney.

Sample is small though but hey you take what you can get…

  73. Tim V says:

I se around 12700-12800 dow as the likely floor for this downside move which should end in the next 2-4 days.

  74. lt says:

Perhaps I spoke to soon, I give NH to Obama, If it goes to Romney we win

  75. Tim V says:

hey moneybags, you jettin off to anywhere today ?

  76. AuthorLMendez, Liberterian For Romney says:

well after good polling for Obama at the end of last week, weekend numbers shifted back to the tie race it was before. For us to be down just 2 in a poll that includes a couple states I would say aren’t swing states right now in the race is good news.

  77. AuthorLMendez, Liberterian For Romney says:

looks like our precitions of the markets not being pleased w/ the French results was right on cue

  78. AuthorLMendez, Liberterian For Romney says:

  79. Phil says:

You gotta love the French. Mountains of red ink and what do the French do? They go and elect a socialist who promises to tax and spend more.

    Haha Just brilliant!

  81. Michael says:

I bet that if Gallup didn’t add New Mexico to this poll it would have showed Romney in the lead.
