  3. rdelbov says:

Decent enough polls for the GOP. IMO Obama has been judged by the scales and has been wanting.

I might add I believe that the D message is even less popular then Obama is.

  4. DW says:

aha! It wasn’t just me asking about the six year old at the theater…link at drudge:

WHAT WAS A 6 YEAR OLD DOING IN MIDNIGHT SCREENING?

  5. Barrett says:

    Good numbers from PA

  6. Yolanda says:

“According to a pooled analysis of recent poll results by non-biased media organizations, including the Associated Press, NBC News, National Public Radio, and MoveOn.org, a recent Rasmussen poll on the Ohio Senate race is particularly ominous for Republicans. There, Democrats are running 4 points ahead of Republicans in the hotly contested Senate race. This is a dramatic slide for the GOP, given that, just two years ago, it won a Senate race in Ohio by more than 18 points.

If Republicans suffer similar 22-point reversals in all swing states come November, President Obama will easily win re-election, with over 450 electoral votes, according to the non-partisan analysis. When called for comment around 9 AM EST today, the Romney campaign field office in Carson City, Nevada did not answer its phones, suggesting that many Romney operations are likely shutting down in the face of these new polling figures.”

  7. DW says:

Bloomberg: What are Obama, Romney going to do about guns?

Sigh. How many times does this have to be answered. Even if you could magically make all guns disappear, then the guy would go in there with an explosive device…if you could then magically make all those disappear, then he goes in there with a machete…if you could make all sharp objects disappear, then he goes in there wielding a garden hoe…

…bottom line is this guy was determined to harm others.

  8. SoHope says:

#6, that is why Yolanda is one of my favorite posters

  9. Mr.Vito says:

“WHAT WAS A 6 YEAR OLD DOING IN MIDNIGHT SCREENING?”

I guess there will be an investigation as soon as they figure out what a 24 year old was doing in a theater shooting people.

  10. DW says:

9…fair enough…I was just pointing out that I wasn’t crazy for raising this question in the thread below. Drudge agrees with me.

  11. Mr.Vito says:

  13. DW says:

Not sure if any of us posted this one yet…WA senate:

    Cantwell 51

    SurveyUSA

A little closer than I might have expected.

  14. Barrett says:

I think today is just a “cream soda” day.

That shooting struck a nerve with me. No silly jokes or witty attacks against Obama.

What an awful thing to have happened

  15. rdelbov says:

In 2010 in Ohio there was an open seat. The GOP nominated a top rated guy while the D’s nominated a political zero. Well that’s my opinion of the D nominee in 2010 and I guess the voters agreeded with.

In 2012 there is a well funded very well known D incumbent with several state wide races behind him. So its no surprise at all that Mandel is not 18% ahead on this point. As matter of fact when was the last time any senator lost re-election by 18%? That’s an impossible standard.

Mandel has Brown within the margin of error in this latest poll. Mandel has preserved his cash and has only now started to advertise. From +20 points down in some polls to MOE is doing quite well IMO.

  16. DW says:

15…any chance for similar scenario in WA?

  17. Barrett says:

#15 – Mandel is very much still in the game. a 4 point race is a tossup, and that goes either way

  18. Bitterlaw says:

Barrett- Sometimes real life makes the fights here seem so small. I can be as petty and nasty as anybody (worse than some) but I agree. Cream soda to all.*

*MD- is the raid still on for 9:00 tonight?

  19. Marv says:

I just took the 2012 election quiz and found that I side 92% with Mitt Romney, especially on Foreign Policy, Economic, Domestic policy, Environmental, Healthcare, and Science issues.

80% with both Ron Paul and Gary Johnson.

    http://www.isidewith.com

  20. Marv says:

    Bitterlaw,

My top three American Presidents, in order:

    George Washington
    Ronald Reagan
    Sam Houston

  21. janz says:

I have been following Mandel for a few years now, and have been impressed by his tenacity as well as enthusiasm/optimism for the political process. He’s a young, interesting guy who loves wearing out shoe leather in order to meet people on a one-on-one basis. If anyone is to do contributions in another state, he would be one to donate to, IMO!

  22. rdelbov says:

If Cantwell and Baumgarnter could meet one on one with every voter in WA then we would have a new US senator from that state.

  23. Barrett says:

Ohh, top presidents…this should be fun.

    George Washington
    Teddy Roosevelt
    Thomas Jefferson

  24. Marv says:

    rdelbov,

Welcome back, it’s nice to see you again. I miss your weekly updates and look forward to reading them again. How about one sometime today?

  25. Bitterlaw says:

    Marv:

That is an interesting list. My Failed Presidents in the US are:

    1. Jefferson Davis
    2. James Buchanan
    3. Jimmy Carter
    4. Barack Obama

  26. Marv says:

    Bitterlaw,

    Appomattox never happened.

  27. Bitterlaw says:

Marv – You never answered my question about which team will be the best Division III footbal team in PA:

    Franklin and Marshall Diplomats

    Moravian Greyhounds

  28. Mr.Vito says:

top three presidents of the united states of america

    chris ballew
    dave dederer
    jason finn

  29. Bitterlaw says:

Marv – Don’t make me take your horse back. You have to accept the past. By the way, in the Texas Senate primary, who am I supposed to like again?

  30. Marv says:

    Bitterlaw,

I’d go with the Diplomats, although they do have kind of a sissy nickname.

  31. Ted O says:

Well…I feel vindicated by ISIDEWITH.COm..Mitt-96 Ron Paul-79 Gary Johnson -69 Virgil Good-63 Jimmy McMillan-44 Obama- 22. I agreed on NO MAJOR issues with Obama. I feel great!!!

  32. janz says:

    Marv

I took that isidewith.com quiz as well, and my bottom line was similar to yours:

Romney was 92%, with 90% going to Ron Paul and Gary Johnson.

  33. Marv says:

    #29 Bitterlaw,

I like Cruz. Gov Perry also likes Cruz, but sided with Dewhurst to get him out of the state. Dewhurst has screwed Perry a few times and he doesn’t want him as Lt Gov anymore.

  34. Barrett says:

    Failed presidents?

    In no particular order

    #1 – Lyndon Johnson
    #2 – Jimmy Carter
    #3 – Barack Obama
    #4 – Franklin Roosevelt
    #5 – Andrew Johnson

  35. Marv says:

    #32 janz,

Looks as if we have similar views on public policy.

  36. Barrett says:

#32 – I got high numbers for Ron Paul and Gary Jonhson as well

  37. Bitterlaw says:

F&M’s mascot is really the Diplomats. They have 2 people dressed in colonial suits with giant heads – Ben Franklin and John Marshall.

Lehigh used to have the pathetic nickname of The Engineers. They changed it to the Mountain Hawks.

  38. Marv says:

    #34 Barrett,

FDR correctly viewed Hitler as an existential threat to the United States prior to the outbreak of war.

He failed miserably at the Yalta Conference in Feb 1945, however.

  39. DW says:

Gallup throws out a lifeline to Obama

    48/44 lead, yesterday was tied.

  40. MD says:

We need to call off the raid tonight. I just can’t do it under these conditions. Let’s set it for tomorrow.

  41. SusyQue says:

Andrew Johnson wanted to carry out Lincoln’s desire not to punish the south for their defection.
That caused great consternation because the north wanted it’s revenge.
He was impeached, but acquitted by the Senate.

  42. rdelbov says:

    Marv

I need to do weekly political and economic updates.

Spot on about Yalta. FDR trusted Uncle Joe to keep his word.

  43. Bitterlaw says:

Marv – If FDR had not failed miserably at Yalta, there would probably be no Bitterlaw in your life. My father was sent to Europe as part of the occupation force. Stalin had already rolled into Germany and was not going to be pushed back. If BitterDad took a bullet trying to push Ivan back, I would not be here to entertain you.

  44. Barrett says:

#41 – Johnson’s desire not to go forth with reconstruction was what earned him a place on my list

  45. MD says:

42 – FDR was very sick by that point. Churchill knew the Soviets would be a big problem.

  46. Bitterlaw says:

MD’s heart grew three sizes today. We go tomorrow. It’s not a great target. There are only a few crazy lefties and there’s actually some lib-on-lib crime there.

  47. Barrett says:

Lyndon Johnson was a bastard who sent thousands of soldiers to their death in vientnam.

Any president could and would have signed in civil rights legislation. The man is a monster, not a hero

  48. MD says:

The raid is off for tonight. We will set the time for tomorrow at 7 pm. Can everyone make it?

  49. John says:

Can someone please help me out. On a day when unemployment shoots back up to 386,000, on a day when the leading economic indicators drop 3%, and on a day when existing home sales drop 5.4% Obama gains two points in the Ras poll and four points in Gallup.
    Are people that stupid?

  50. Barrett says:

#49 – People are politicizing an attack on people who were watching a batman movie

So yes, they are that stupid. And they will ALWAYS be that stupid, if not more stupid.

  51. ThisYearLooksLike1980Again says:

I’ll give LBJ credit for Civil Rights

JFK was too busy plowing high school girls to make the Civil Rights Act a reality

On Vietnam the LBJ administration was a catastrophe

  52. MD says:

47 – I am not sure the monster monicker fits. His great society idea, while pure of intention, could only end in failure. Pie in the sky liberal bs. As for Vietnam, he inherited that from JFK. RFK was a huge proponent of the action in Vietnam and even initially counseled LBJ to increase the committment. A few years later he turned dove when it was politically expedient for him to do so. Vietnam was lost politically.

  53. Mr.Vito says:

Every time a tracking poll changes, an angel gets its wings…

Ras and Gallup are giving out wings…

  54. Bitterlaw says:

Hindsight is 20/20. Stalin could have been pushed economically but the American public would not have supported a shooting war with the Soviets in 1945. 400,000 dead in 4,5 years (with the defeat of Japan not accomplished) was terrible enough. A nuke on Moscow? Seems reasonable in hindsight but unthinkable in 1945.

  55. MD says:

The strategy for Vietnam was a disaster. LBJ has to bear the brunt of that as CIC.

We could have beaten them into the stone ages had it not been for the politicians.

  56. MD says:

49 – Yes and it is why he can win.

  57. the new Ras poll of PA makes it go back to the tossup column in my electoral map, no tossups? then it leans Obama, down from likely Obama

  58. Barrett says:

LBJ was a failure in every aspect that a president could be. He’s the only president I can say that I actually “hate”

  59. ThisYearLooksLike1980Again says:

    Win or don’t fight

  60. Scott says:

    #49- John
One reason could be that in the Gallup Poll,a big day for Romney on July 12th rolled off in today’s poll.On the 12th,Romney gained 3% on Obama.Today,Obama gained about the same.

  61. ThisYearLooksLike1980Again says:

I’ll give the ugly fuqq credit for civil rights

Things were bad then for blacks

  62. MD says:

54 – Two ways to look at it:

    1. The Soviets had lost millions of men and were ready for the taking.

    2. The vast landspace would still have resulted in at least a million more deaths of American GI’s. The public, imo, would never had stood for that.

  63. Bitterlaw says:

MD- The Americans actually won the Tet Offensive on the ground and lost it on tv. I was not raised by hippies. My Dad always wondered why the US didn’t drop a nucleatr bomb on Woodstock.

  64. ThisYearLooksLike1980Again says:

I do think LBJ was one of the dumbest Presidents ever

Aside from ideology he was one incredible dumbfuqq

  65. SusyQue says:

Bartrett, it started with JFK…LJ is noted for passing the Civil Rights Act.

  66. ThisYearLooksLike1980Again says:

Nuke the motherfuqqers or dont fight

  67. MD says:

Bitter – My Dad was there for that and says the same thing. The puke Uncle Walter was a backstabbing commie.

  68. Mr.Vito says:

My father-in-law was at the Tet Offensive.

  69. bio mom says:

    49

    Yes they are.

Also, Gallup using a 7 day tracker makes it hard to analyze trends.

  70. MD says:

64 – LBJ was a political operator to the extreme. He was only put on the ticket as a complete counterbalance to JFK. LBJ was southern and protestant.

As for Civil Rights, it was a heroic stand at the time. The other Dem Southern Senators he served with were against it all the way. He had to lobby R Senators from the north very hard to pass it. In the south, including his home state of Texas, he was vilified.

It is easy to say today that it was easy but it really wasn’t back then.

  71. Bitterlaw says:

Stalin was the ultimate killer. He was responsible for probably as many dead Soviet citizens as Hitler. Many in Ukraine originally thought of the Germans as liberators. Unless there was a coup or nukes dropped on Moscow, Stalin was not giving Eastern Europe back.

  72. Diogenes says:

Stop worrying about statistical noise and short-term variance. The long term trend shows obama’s approval slowly plummetting. There is a very small rally-around-the-president effect from this senseless shooting.

  73. J T says:

The reason I never follow Gallup anyways. Wild swings and they use RV polls until October every year, to help their peers, the Dems.

RAS had a small outlier, no biggie, he is still the best

  74. ThisYearLooksLike1980Again says:

Keep your eyes on the big picture:

    Obama can’t get over 45%

The economy is going into a recession

    Europe collapsing, China slumping

    Ballgame

  75. ThisYearLooksLike1980Again says:

LBJ was truly a transformative President, mostly for the worse

Look how many enormous (irreversible?) changes were set in motion in his Presidency

  76. SusyQue says:

    O’Reilly says:
Summing up Mr. Obama is not a socialist. He’s not a communist. He’s a social justice anti-capitalist. And that’s what he is.

I think ooo is a sociast marxist! He is Alinsky’s
    son.

  77. J T says:

    Cronkite was afraid of Reagan.

  78. Bitterlaw says:

I know that things didn’t work out as planned with everybody hugging and holding hands but the Civil Rights leaders of the 1950s and 1960s were truly brave men and women. My Dad told me that even though many people in the North thought that segregation was wrong, they didn’t really think about it. Before I get accused, there was plenty of racism in the Norht, too. Jackie Robinson saud Philadelphia was one of the most racist places he had to endure. I think the Red Sox were the last team to have a black player.

When those girls were blown up on their way to church, that was it. The scum that perpetrated that murder killed their own cause when the decent people in the entire country said, “Enough.”

  79. jamie says:

Gallup did poll adults on Wednesday for USA Today/Gallup on wether Romney should release his tax returns. Every time those two team up it seems Obama has a spike, which makes me wonder if those numbers are introduced into the Tracking Poll and Job Approval sample. I tend to keep more of an eye on Gallup’s Job Approval numbers as opposed to the HorseRace numbers because the Job Apporval numbers only look back for 3 days.

I know a 17 year old who has that in real life, so I try to be sympathetic and do not engage SE. The liberals there tend not to be as sympathetic.

There is a real SOB named Keith who posted there for awhile, but I think he has already hightailed it out of there, because he senses something might happen.

Scott P. is somebody who I have gone back and forth with online for literally over 8 years now. He is a decent enough guy, but has gotten more and more left every year. On that blog, he talked about how he called into the Dana Loesch show in St. Louis just yesterday and I got to hear that, and he got his rear end handed to him, it was funny.

my name is jack is an older, very far angry leftist, but at least he is not dead certain Obama is going to win without any difficulty, like the rest of the lefties there seem to think.

Obama speaks on the CO shootings:

“Let me tell you something. If you’ve committed mass murder in a crowded theater, you didn’t do that. Somebody else made that happen. There are a lot of insane, murderous Americans who agree with me – because they want to escape blame. They know they didn’t, look, if you’ve been killed a bunch of people, you didn’t do it on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so evil. There are a lot of evil people out there. It must be because I’m more deranged than everybody else. Let me tell you something, there are a whole bunch of deranged people out there.

If you were a successful mass murderer, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a right-wing parent or minister somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to indoctrinate you in a culture of hate. Somebody made sure laws gave you access to guns. If you’ve killed a bunch of people, you didn’t do that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Al Gore created the Internet so that people could watch “Love Story” streaming on Netflix.

The point is, is that when we commit mass murder, we do so because of our individual initiative but also because of evil Republicans. There are some things, just like committing mass murder, we don’t do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.”

  130. Corey says:

Tim, you have to appreciate the talent that those posts take.

  131. Tim says:

Insane people have talent too, Corey. That, I will agree with.

  132. Bitterlaw says:

Tim’s just mad because The Man is keeping us all down. Fight the power, Tim!

  133. rdelbov says:

Here’s my fast take on why 2008 is not 2012 part II.

1st in the 2006-2008 runoff we saw a three year improvement in voter registration numbers for the Ds. In state after state month after month the D voter registration numbers improved. They reached record D highs in Oct 2008 just before the election. Since Jan 2009 until today in state after state month after month we have seen continual improvements in R registration numbers in states where partisan numbers are kept. The trend is there for all to see. In 2008 we got swamped and in 2012 the swamp is draining.

2nd look at those young voters and volunteers. In 2008 the Obama campaign only had to drag a poster through a crowd of young people and tons of voters were registered plus every volunteer slot got filled. Now if they try to register folks that way there are as likely to get Romney voters as Obama ones. The army of Obama volunteers have become a nice squad. In 2008 they had 700,000 volunteers and in 2012 they are looking for 7,000 workers.

You only have to look and observe and to the massive seachange from 2008 to 2012.

  134. Corey says:

Would be terribly wrong to make jokes about Fred Willard and the theater at this time?

    Probably.

  135. Bitterlaw says:

Too soon for normal people or too soon for here?

  136. Corey says:

I feel like a horrible person now.

  137. Barrett says:

Corey, I say we give it a couple of days. People will not soon forget.

That being said, I’m not a particular fan of the death penalty (only because our legal system has its flaws), but if we needed to expedite this man’s meeting with God, I would not be inclined to disagree.

  138. Barrett says:

    #136 – Cheer up, you didn’t murder 12 people. I think you’re ok

  139. Tim says:

Bitterlaw, I am now totally confused. When I was young, “the man” was the police.

Later on, it was Dennis Rodman.

No idea who it is, now.

  140. Corey says:

Death penalty for Fred Willard? He didn’t shoot anyone.. as far as we know.

Ok, I’m going to hell. See you all there.

  141. bio mom says:

Off topic but I was in San Francisco for a few days this week. Passed the Occupy SF site in front of the Federal Reserve Bank there. Pretty pathetic. The two times I passed there it consisted of about 8 people, little activity or energy, and a few small tents. Almost kind of sad.

  142. Bitterlaw says:

Corey – Willard killed over 100 million sperm. See you in Hell, my friend.

  143. Bitterlaw says:

Tim – I thought The Man was the system, the boss, the capitalist system.

  144. Corey says:

No wonder Mitt Romney doesn’t go by his real first name.

  145. rdelbov says:

I guess Romney is to blame for this as 375 employees at the Illinois Department of Children and Family are receiving layoff notices

    http://www.sj-r.com/breaking/x691231233/600-will-get-layoff-notices-at-DCFS

The budget appears to come down between prison guards and employees collecting child support payments from downbeat dads.

  146. Bitterlaw says:

bio mom – Maybe they were just homeless. When the Occupiers were in Philadelphia, they were happy to have some homeless people join them. It fit their message. They even fed them. Then they discovered that the homeless just wanted food and didn’t care about their message. The Occupiers met the real world and did not like it.

  147. Barrett says:

The Occupiers met the real world and did not like it.

    Comment by Bitterlaw

That is probably the best summary of the Occupy Movement that I’ve heard thus far

  153. jenny-mitt romney dewey says:

This campaign is like deja vu. Is it 2008 again? Mccain trailed in the battleground states and people on this blog dismissed the polls. Now, Mitt has time to turn things around but Obama is doing a job distracting people from the bad economy. Obama isn’t Carter. He’s ruthless and he will do anything to win.

  154. J T says:

Jenny Goebbels, as usual your forget the big differences.

Mitt has outraised Obama. McCain was looking under the couch for quarters at this point in 2008

154…not only that…McCain was hated by the GOP base. Romney has the chance to sell himself to the base.

  161. bio mom says:

Kim Strassel has an eye opening article today in the WSJ about how the Obama administration is going after one of Romney’s supporters. They have someone tryng to open his divorce records; are audiitng two years of his taxes and those of his wife; and have begun an investigation on the two migrant workers who work on his cattle ranch to see if he is in compliance with how he is treating them. It is a very disturbing article. This Obama is truly slimy. If there was some way to publicize these things I think America would begin to move away from him.

  162. Apologetic California says:

153, Except that McCAin wasn’t just behind Obama, he was getting creamed by double digits in battleground states and in many national polls.

  166. DW says:

161…like I said yesterday, losing is not an option for Obama. He has Plan A, B, C, D, E, F, and G all ready to deploy. Its only a matter of how nasty he will be.

I have a restrictor plate on my carburator of enthusiasm. Carter just rolled over and went back to his peanut farm. Obama has brass knuckles and isn’t afraid to use them.

Raleigh, N.C. – A new Civitas Poll shows that 50 percent of likely North Carolina voters have an unfavorable opinion of President Barack Obama. They also select Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney over Obama by 49 to 48 percent.

“The number of voters who say they have a ‘very unfavorable’ view of President Obama has gone up 6 percentage points to 43 percent just since May,” said Civitas President Francis X. De Luca. “Meanwhile, though Romney has been hit with a barrage of attack ads, in those two months his favorable rating crept up two points to 50 percent. Now he’s also closing in on a majority when voters indicate who they’d vote for.”

Moreover, voters are making up their minds. In the January Civitas Poll, 11 percent were undecided; this new poll puts the number at 3 percent. “Obviously it’s still close and much could happen,” De Luca concluded. “But as voter sentiment solidifies, it will become more difficult for President Obama to pull support away from Romney, especially if, as reported, Romney has a financial advantage over the Obama campaign for the final phase of the presidential race.”
