Dems Lead Gubernatorial Race in VA

Hey look at this, an actual Election poll to talk about. Quinnipiac University has dumped out a new poll for the state of Virginia showing the damage Donald Trump is doing to Republicans as nobody other than Ed Gillespie can get above 33% against the two Democrats.

GOVERNOR – VIRGINIA (Quinnipiac)

Tom Perriello (D) 43%
Ed Gillespie (R) 36%

Tom Perriello (D) 44%
Corey Stewart (R) 31%

Tom Perriello (D) 43%
Denver Riggleman (R) 30%

Tom Perriello (D) 43%
FrankAnn Wagner (R) 32%

Ralph Northam (D) 41%
Ed Gillespie (R) 35%

Ralph Northam (D) 42%
Corey Stewart (R) 31%

Ralph Northam (D) 42%
Denver Riggleman (R) 31%

Ralph Northam (D) 41%
FrankAnn Wagner (R) 33%

GOVERNOR – VIRGINIA – GOP PRIMARY (Quinnipiac)
Ed Gillespie 24%
Corey Stewart 7%
FrankAnn Wagner 5%
Denver Riggleman 2%

GOVERNOR – VIRGINIA – DEM PRIMARY (Quinnipiac)
Tom Perriello 19%
Ralph Northam 19%

Hopefully Virginia Republicans aren’t dumb enough to nominate Stewart, who would make 2013 nominee Ken Cuccinelli look like a sane choice by comparison. This poll was done February 10-15 among 989 registered voters, 419 Republicans and 462 Democrats.

“…dumped out a new poll for the state of Virginia showing the damage Donald Trump is doing to Republicans as nobody other than Ed Gillespie can get above 33% against the two Democrats.”

-How, exactly, is this Trump’s fault? Virginia has been leaning leftward in every statewide election, except when Gillespie made it close.

Or maybe I missed some other Republican victories on a statewide level that someone could point out…

    Posted on previous thread:

The anti-Trumpers think that Trump will finally say something so outrageous that it will turn the American people against him. Has not happened in two years.

As someone said: “The press takes Trump literally, but not serious; the public takes Trump seriously, but not literally.”

Watching the liberals and press go bonkers over Trump’s news conference was good entertainment; it beats Obama continually bashing the U.S. and traveling the world to give apology speeches on our behalf.

  5. Mr.Vito says:

“How, exactly, is this Trump’s fault?”

It isn’t… the sample is D+7 like the 2016 exits.

Independents are +4 for Gillespie. (Trump was +5)
Gillespie and Perriello are overwhelmingly winning their own party (1-3% defections)

If the 2017 election has the same turnout, then the race is exactly where it should be.

Every candidate has 45% or less with an opinion about them.

Basically this is a Generic D versus Generic R presidential turnout result.

  6. Mr.Vito says:

  8. Mr.Vito says:

Oh, and the fact that Gillespie never got within 10 points of Warner in the RCP 2014 average was also because of Trump’s antics.

  9. SanDiegoCitizen says:

Don’t know anything about Virginia politics — but when the well-known leading Republican candidate only has 24% support among Republicans; and 20-24% of the general election voters are undecided — perhaps there is a problem with the candidate?

The Democrat candidate polls in the low 41-43% range, so its an open race.

    Quick snippet from Wikipedia:

McFarland’s government career began while she was a freshman at George Washington University, working part-time in the White House Situation Room typing the President’s Daily Brief.[3] She spent seven years 1970-76 in the West Wing of the White House, working her way up to become a member of Henry Kissinger’s National Security Council staff.[4] After the Ford Administration, McFarland studied at Oxford University[3] (BA, MA) in Politics, Philosophy and Economics,[citation needed] and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with concentrations on nuclear weapons, China, and the Soviet Union[3] (study toward PhD, all but dissertation).[citation needed] She returned during the Reagan Administration as a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee staff. Then, in President Ronald Reagan’s administration, she served as the speechwriter for Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger from 1982 to 1985 and later as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs and Pentagon spokesperson.[3]

In 1985, McFarland received the Defense Department’s highest civilian award, the Department of Defense Distinguished Civilian Service Award.[5]

  44. NYCmike says:

Not sure why Trump wants her there, but it might be because he trusts her, which I would think a President needs.

In a situation like this, where we clearly DO NOT HAVE ALL THE DETAILS, I would defer to the person making the decision, instead of hyperventilating.

  45. Mr.Vito says:

I’m curious why Robbie keeps calling KT McFarland a Fox talking head as is she has no defense credentials.

Is it ignorance, or the usual?

  46. Robbie says:

Hello! KT McFarland hasn’t been part of the government since 1985. That’s more than 31 years. Trump picked her simply because he used to see her on FoxNews. That is not the reason you put someone on the NSC.

Either you want Trump to run a serious and credible national security operation, or you want him to stack the government with FoxNews contributors. What’s next? Will people defend Trump if he names Judge Janine to the Supreme Court? She’s got her own FoxNews show.

  47. NYCmike says:

    “WITH GRADMA’S SHAWL…”

  48. NYCmike says:

” Will people defend Trump if he names Judge Janine to the Supreme Court? She’s got her own FoxNews show.”

    That is really stupid.

  49. Mr.Vito says:

I see Mike has posted some of them.

  50. SanDiegoCitizen says:

    43. “Just so everyone understands, it seems Trump won’t get his preferred choice for NSA because Trump wouldn’t let Harward bring in his own staff and replace FoxNews talking head KT McFarland.”

Did Harward actually say this? What is your source? “It seems” comments need to be taken with a grain of salt. McFarland appears very qualified, is it fair to hire someone then immediately turn around and terminate them?

  51. NYCmike says:

So, let’s see: Flynn didn’t mind KT, this new guy doesn’t want her, and Trump does.

As I mentioned, maybe Trump trusts KT, and wants her there to provide certain things that he may not get from another person.

TIME WILL TELL…….put on some depends, Robbie.

I’m curious why Robbie keeps calling KT McFarland a Fox talking head as is she has no defense credentials.
Is it ignorance, or the usual?

    – She last served in 1985. I congratulate her for choosing a family over government, but when you ask a Vice Admiral to run the NSC, you give him the right to hire who he wants. He was deputy at Centcom, a Seal, and a Vice Admiral. In other words, perfectly suited to understand the job. McFarland was on FoxNews recently. They’re not the same.

  53. NYCmike says:

    Correction:

    – Why? Why is it stupid. McFarland got her job because Trump saw her on FoxNews. And the fact Mike Flynn hired her really shouldn’t redound to her favor since he just got canned.

  56. Mr.Vito says:

“Trump picked her simply because he used to see her on FoxNews.”

    Robbie,
You may be correct in your assessment. Stop hyperventilating.

    – I am hyperventilating because Trump’s White House is a mess and choosing a former FoxNews personality over a Vice Admiral is nuts. What Trump needs is stability, not instability.

My guess is Trump will turn to Petraeus, but what if he wants to clean out McFarland and the others Flynn hired?

  59. Mr.Vito says:

Maybe Jeb shouldn’t have taken a break for a decade… he was pretty rusty.

Robbie might have a point there.

Of course the rest has no merit.

  60. Mr.Vito says:

I wonder if Robbie will still be hyperventilating in 3 days like I said he should probably do before commenting on a story…

You would think getting burned 9 out of 10 times might make a difference… but he is like the rat that needs that affirmation and keeps pressing the button.

  61. Mr.Vito says:

I mean, he has already embarrassed himself twice on this story with his bias.

  62. SanDiegoCitizen says:

“And the fact Mike Flynn hired her really shouldn’t redound to her favor since he just got canned.”

Flynn quit because of the disclosure issue at Trump’s request. Trump still speaks highly of him. Why should this result in McFarland losing her job?

By the way, are you saying Flynn or Trump hired her? Thought you claimed Trump did after seeing her on Fox News. Get your story straight.

  63. Mr.Vito says:

    Ok, three times.

  64. Robbie says:

All week there have been rumors Chris Christie might replace Reince Priebus as Chief of Staff. It’s no secret I don’t care for Christie, but one thing about Christie is clear. He has a commanding presence and people would understand that he’s boss. On top of that, Trump respects him (I think) so he might be someone who could finally tell Trump no. Maybe Christie would be a good choice.

On the NSA topic, just remember this. Right now, the Trump White House is finding it difficult to hire a Communications Director or a National Security Advisor.

  65. Robbie says:

No, no embarrassment by me. Trump chose a FoxNews personality over a Vice Admiral and former SEAL. That’s the embarrassment. There’s plenty on which to defend Trump. A decision like this is not.

  66. Mr.Vito says:

We know you aren’t embarrassed. The person who embarrasses themselves is often unembarrassed.

  67. Mr.Vito says:

By the way… I read Trump was still speaking with Harward contrary to what Robbie has stated as fact.

  68. Mr.Vito says:

It is also not embarrassing to keep your word to someone who is qualified for a position.

Gates was a great Secretary of Defense and Mattis and Petraeus were on his staff in the past.

Trump still has an excellent opportunity to accomplish important legislative tasks and bringing in someone like Gates (could be someone else) would help bring order to accomplish those goals.

Robbie, nobody is going after you for having a difference of opinion.
The problem is that your opinion is usually based upon “news” that has, at the minimum, passed the realm of rumor, and is bordering on innuendo.

Stop with the instant tweets that you hear, wait for a response from the person being attacked (usually Trump, the White House, or a Republican), let various experts on the blogosphere apply their knowledge, and then let’s see where we are at.

    Why is that so hard?

Christie and his wife, Mary Pat, joined Trump at the White House on Tuesday.

The Republican governor said while guest hosting a New York sports talk radio show Thursday that Trump pointed out the menu and told people to get whatever they want. Then he said he and Christie were going to have the meatloaf.

“This is what it’s like to be with Trump,” Christie said. “He says, ‘There’s the menu, you guys order whatever you want.’ And then he says, ‘Chris, you and I are going to have the meatloaf.’”

Alexander Acosta Trump Labor Nominee Supports Amnesty, Cheap Foreign Labor

President Donald Trump’s new nominee to run the Department of Labor is an accomplished lawyer and a rising star in the GOP’s Hispanic and pro-diversity wing.
The nominee, Alexander Acosta, is a Harvard graduate and a former senior justice department official under George W. Bush. From 2005, he served as a federal attorney in Florida, where he successfully prosecuted a series of high-profile cases and is now a university dean.
If confirmed by the Senate to run the Department of Labor, Acosta will play an important role in overseeing and regulating the annual inflow of roughly 1 million contract workers. Those contract workers fill white-collar and blue-collar jobs throughout the economy and they also lower wages for American graduates and unskilled workers.
However, he’s likely to clash with Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a populist who is expected to push for reduced use of foreign workers. Throughout the 2016 campaign, Trump called for reforms of the contract-worker programs, including the H-1B program, and declared his policy would be to “Buy American, Hire American.”

As the U.S. attorney for Southern Florida, Acosta agreed not to file any federal charges against the wealthy financier, Jeffrey Epstein, if he pled guilty to state charges involving soliciting prostitution and soliciting a minor for prostitution.

The earth is constantly changing…erosion in some places, volcanic activity, rivers changing course, etc.

Just one example is the southern shore of Lake Ontario. During the ice age the thicker ice on the northern side of the lake weighed more, leaving a deeper depression at the lake’s bottom. The rebound there after the ice melted is greater than the southern side of the lake resulting in water pushing south across the lake and eating away at the cliffs on the New York side. There are places I know where there used to be homes and cottages overlooking the lake, but these structures collapsed long ago by the action of the water.

Based on Trump’s early morning tweet storm, it looks like LTG Kellogg is a serious contender to become NSA.

The NYT reports Petraeus has upped his lobbying effort to get the job now that Harward has turned down Trump, but would decorated four star general like Petraeus be willing to accept the terms Harward wasn’t?

  227. Robbie says:

Doesn’t look like Petraeus will be NSA since Trump and his team have made clear a new NSA will have to accept those already in place on the NSC.

    – Congratulations to the White House for hiring a comms director. Now, Trump and his finely tuned machine of a White House can get on to filling the rest of the government. There are 696 Senate confirmable positions and so far Trump has not nominated anyone for 662 of them.

    – I absolutely have a problem with the slow walking of nominees and I believe McConnell should be doing more to speed up the process. He should keep the Senate in session 24/7 until all of the cabinet officials are confirmed. None of that has anything to do with the fact Trump has yet to even nominate 662 of the 696 Senate confirmable spots. Maybe he doesn’t plan to fill all of them, but it’s time to get busy filling the government rather than worrying about whether nominees were for him or against him in the election.

  258. Mr.Vito says:

Still working on the election night chronology. Just some highlights — a very small sampling — to illustrate what Trump said about media is true:

12:41 am Byron Pitts on ABC says he is confused because on paper Clinton was prepared to be president and Trump was just a white guy with a haircut.

12:42 am Van Jones on CNN says the election result is a nightmare. He says you tell your kids not to be a bigot, so how do you tell the election result to your children? He says the election was a white-lash against a black president.

1:07 am Susannah Guthrie on NBC says Trump is the total opposite of the cerebral Barack Obama.

1:34 am Richard Engel on NBC says assuming Trump wins, it is catastrophic for our country and our position in the world. Trump provokes a constitutional crisis.

1:39 am Terry Moran on ABC says Russia is a big winner tonight.

2:30 am Katy Tur reporting for NBC says more Trump staff are entering the room. But Tur quickly shifts her comments, bitterly upset at the list of offensive things that Trump has said and done, including his role in his business, and the open investigation with Trump University, and his conduct with women who have alleged he groped them. He is defined by breaking rules, and this is what his supporters liked about him. Tur went on and on as long as she could, talking about the riot police needed around Trump, and the deeply divided country, and she wonders what reaction will come from people feeling disenfranchised by Trump.

3:06 am Chris Matthews on MSNBC says that there might have been someone around Trump with an IQ who informed him that he would have to deal with the crashing stock markets, and that is why the tone of the speech lacked the attack lines.

3:17 am Richard Engel on MSNBC says the USA is entering the realm of some other countries now being led by narcissists. He warns that once Trump doesn’t get what he wants, look out, it won’t end well.

3:19 am Lawrence O’Donnell on MSNBC says the founding fathers anticipated Donald Trump because they feared tyrants, they overthrew the rule of a king, and all the true powers belong congress

3:26 am Chuck Todd says perhaps Trump should apologize to Obama over the things he said about him even though it will be late. James Carville says minorities now know what the country thinks of them.

3:32 am Katy Tur at the Trump headquarters says on the campaign trail it was mostly white, with very few Hispanics and very few blacks. His crowds were increasingly angry, one even calling for Clinton’s assassination. She said it surprised her and it shouldn’t have surprised her.

3:47 am Rachel Maddow and Eugene Robinson agree that Trump won because he used racism to rally the white vote.

3:52 am Lawrence O’Donnell on MSNBC says that a large numbers of people right now are crying, and they are filled with fear, and his speech tonight created more fear.

3:53 am Eugene Robinson says Trump needs to cut out the racism right now, and voters used him as an umbrella to be racist.

? Assembly Bill 542, by Assemblyman Chris Holden, D-Pasadena, would make presidential election days a paid holiday for state employees and schools.

? Assembly Bill 838, by Assemblyman Marc Levine, D-Greenbrae, would recommend the state add Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election to its history and social science curriculum framework.

? Senate Bill 300, by Sen. Bill Monning, D-Carmel, would require health warning labels for sugary drinks. This will be Monning’s third run at the issue.

? Senate Bill 310, by Sen. Toni Atkins, D-San Diego, would allow inmates in state prison or county jail to seek a name or gender change.

? Senate Bill 343, by Sen. Steven Bradford, D-Gardena, would allow prisoners serving a life sentence to petition for release once they turn 70 or if they are older than 60 and have a serious health condition.

Under normal circumstances, staff would not be an issue for a new NSA. In this case though, Flynn, with the blessing of Trump and Bannon, populated the NSC with Flynn allies from DIA. And as all the reporting suggests, Flynn was not on the best of terms lately with many of his contemporary flag officers.

So in that light, it’s quite easy to believe the Flynn holdovers might not be on the same page as the new NSA or that the new NSA would be on the same page with the Flynn holdovers. That might especially be true on Russia since Flynn seemed to be somewhat of a Russia dove.

Both Harward and Petraeus served under Bob Gates and Harward served under Mattis as well. The two, apparently, wanted to bring in people who hued more to the traditional Republican foreign policy team. That’s why both wanted control of staffing. If nothing else, they simply didn’t want it mandated they must keep this person or that person.

As I said, under normal circumstances, one NSA replacing another would be no big deal because they would each likely share the same general set of views that the entire council shared. Here though, all of the new names considered are of a very different stripe than Flynn.

  320. Robbie says:

It really defies logic that John Bolton is in line for NSA, but this would be the first NSC where it’s top two members are FoxNews contributors. And if Monica Crowley hadn’t been dinged for rampant plagiarism, it could have been three.

There is a reason Trump considered her for his cabinet. There is no guarantee either Heitkamp or Manchin would be defeated. I know Republicans in N.D. who like her, and might vote for her. By contrast, the Democratic base in N.D. has a lot of leftists, so they could attempt to primary her.

So many dumb comments, but fortunately I have time to respond.

To Sheeple Jr. – I don’t know who you are and I really don’t care whether I get on your nerves. You’re obviously new here, but let me fill you in on something. I will post comments that I feel are interesting and topical. I have been doing so on this site since 2004. If you don’t like what I post, just skip right over them.

If you read my comment as you claimed, you would have noticed I preceded the tweet by noting I find what she wrote to be hard to believe. That said, John Bolton was on FoxNews during the 7 o’clock hour playing very coy about any potential interview with Trump over the NSA. He is being pushed by Ted Cruz as well as Hugh Hewitt and is a close friend of McFarland.

To lisab – I would encourage you to actually read the comments I have written before you make assumptions about my views. If you had, you would have noticed in comment 269 I wrote this:

    – I absolutely have a problem with the slow walking of nominees and I believe McConnell should be doing more to speed up the process. He should keep the Senate in session 24/7 until all of the cabinet officials are confirmed. None of that has anything to do with the fact Trump has yet to even nominate 662 of the 696 Senate confirmable spots. Maybe he doesn’t plan to fill all of them, but it’s time to get busy filling the government rather than worrying about whether nominees were for him or against him in the election.

Finally to NYCMike – When I see something pop up in my Twitter feed that I feel is topical to the discussion taking place here, I copy it and post it here. If the quickness bothers you, all the better.

That said, I’m not sure what actually passes muster with you these days because you seem to have a very broad definition of what a rumor is. Apparently, you seem to believe we should only talk about things Dear Leader Trump has officially confirmed. That may be your wish, but I am certainly going to pay no attention to it. When I see something I believe is interesting, I’m probably going to bring it here for discussion.

    – Ah yes, let’s toss around unfounded charges of sexism. That’s the ticket.

How about I think McFarland is not appropriate for the job since she hasn’t had any experience in government since 1985 (more than 31 years ago). When she last worked for government, the Soviet Union was the main player. Today, it’s terrorism. The names at the top of the list like Petraeus, Hadley, and the other generals have spent the last decade dealing precisely with terrorism and ISIS. McFarland was on FoxNews. It’s not the same thing. Not even close.

But sure, just lob a sexism charge at me.

    – Flynn, with a few exceptions, got to name his own staff and he didn’t win the presidency.

I think as far as Petraeus and Harward go, their issues where as much about lines of command as about staffing. They wanted Steve Bannon, Trump’s political aid and former Breitbart editor, moved off the NSC. Trump wants him there.

    – Trump promised to hire the best people. Hiring the best people also means hiring the people with the best experience. Petraeus, Hadley, and the others have relevant experience to the issue of the day, terroism.

It’s not just that McFarland hasn’t been involved in government for 31 years. It’s also that her prior time in government dealt with the Soviet Union.

Let me go a little farther on McFarland though. The NSC is a big operation so the fact she’s on it is not bad on it’s own. My big issue with her is she’s the number 2 on the NSC.

Keep her, fire her. But she shouldn’t be a roadblock to hiring someone who would bring much needed credibility to a White House that is having some issues.

  358. Walt says:

    San Diego Citizen,

About Manchin and Dems in WV….

About 5 or 6 years ago, [When the WV House of Delegates was a 66D to 34R] I and other R legislators had casual conversations with Conservative Dem fellow state legislators who were most concerned about how liberal the national D party had become.

The 66 Ds then broke out to be about 38 conservative Ds and 28 Liberal Labor Ds.

The advice that I and other R legislators gave them was to either switch parties and become Rs (which for various reasons they absolutely refused to do–the State D apparatus was such that they could bring lots to bear on any D legislator who jumped ship and would insure their ruination in the political realm)….OR for the D party in WV to break with the national Ds and form the “D Party of WV” that reflected the will of the majority of D registered voters in WV. They refused to do the later of the two choices.

We told them that if they did not chose to do either of the two above choices, that the time would soon come that they would lose control in WV. That day came on election day in November 2014.

Since the Rs gained control in Nov. 2014 the D PARTY in WV has lurched even FURTHER left and have put all sorts of nutty leftist ideas in their state party platform.

The Ds being soundly rejected again by WV voters statewide in 2016 made no difference to the D PARTY leadership. [the stark exception to the D massacre being the election of a wealth outsider Jim Justice as governor and reelection of a D WV Treasurer].

The WV D party continues to steer even more to the left.

If Rs win here in 2018 and 2020 and control redistricting, they will bust up the multi-member House districts (that favor Ds and is where most of the Ds come from) and make all 100 single member districts. Then I would not be surprised if the Rs take 75 of the 100 House seats.

Rs now outnumber Dems, even though I no longer identify myself as an R.

Anybody who doesn’t think Obama damaged the Dem party, not only in elected positions, should consider this.

IN 2008, 36% (without leaners), called themselves Democrats. Now its 25% (without leaners).

“For the first time in years, self-identified Republicans slightly outnumber Democrats nationwide, according to the Gallup U.S. Daily Tracking Poll. Political junkies and news consumers would never know it if they simply watched network and cable news all day, but the results of Gallup’s tracking are the latest set of data indicating the modern Democratic Party is in serious political peril.

In Jan. 2009 (9-11), right before former President Barack Obama was sworn into office after his landslide electoral college victory over Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., a majority of Americans (51%) identified as Democrats when including leaners. As early as Feb. 1, Democrats still had a slight edge in party affiliation nationwide, 47% to 42%

Now, only 43% with leaners self-identify with the Democratic Party. Without leaners, it just 25% juxtaposed to 36% in Jan. 2008.”

The fact highly decorated flag officers have turned down trump’s NSA position is a red flag. They’ve taken a look at Trump’s first four weeks, noted the dysfunction, and come to the conclusion they would need, at least some, different people on the NSC to produce a more orderly process. For that Trump has taken their names off the list.

Honestly, who would you prefer to be a key player in foreign policy. David Petraeus who has had five combat commands, turned around the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and led the CIA, or Fox n friends guest John Bolton? It’s not a close call for me. Personally, I think Bolton’s hyper-aggressive views on the Middle East are not what is needed.

When you add up all the “rumors” it sure looks good for Bolton being picked to fill Flynn’s old job. If Trump did ask KT McFarland to stay on. If Trump then asked KT who she preferred to be her boss, and she responds Bolton. Then, we have Bolton suddenly on a plane headed for a Florida interview with Trump…him getting the nod fits all those puzzle pieces.

Also, people like Cruz and even Hugh Hewitt have become verbal advocates of Bolton. I personally like the guy. And, the fact he doesn’t need congressional approval – which he probably wouldn’t get – makes choosing Bolton more a matter of how he fits in with the national security team’s philosophy.

  419. jason says:

  420. Robbie says:

Now that it’s become well known Trump is unwilling to let highly decorated flag officers professionalize his NSC, anyone who takes the job will look as if he/she was willing to accept the top down, dysfunctional process that Flynn set up.

All that said, I think it’s clear now that the position is really for show. Steve Bannon and Jared Kushner really run the process just as they do the rest of the White House. There are already stories that Kushner serves as “shadow Secretary of State” and is cutting Tillerson out of important decisions like Trump’s sudden change on whether there should be a two-state or one-state solution in Israel.

This sounds like MSM garbage to me.

    – I think it’s important to note there is a big difference between the White House and the cabinet. Sadly, we don’t have government policy made by the cabinet anymore. Clinton, GWB, and Obama all concentrated power in the White House and left the cabinet, essentially, out of the loop. Trump seems to be doing the same with Bannon and Kushner.

I’m not anti-Bannon or anti-Kushner at all, but they’re the ones making the policy. I think that plays a big role in why Trump seems to have rejected any efforts to professionalize the NSC Flynn set up. They helped establish the group and they don’t want their influence reduced by someone like Petraeus or Harward.

Even if you don’t buy all of that, I think it’s also fair to say Petraeus and others wanted to cut Steve Bannon out of the process. They wanted a direct line, as other NSA’s had, to the president.

  432. jason says:

Look, Wobbie, my reservations about Trump were clearly articulated during the campaign and they haven’t changed.

But he won and is President. He is entitled to pick his cabinet and administration and to pursue the agenda that elected him.

The MSM and the Democrats are never going to approve of any of the nominations and appointments for ANYTHING. They are not going to approve ANYTHING he proposes. He could nominate the ghost of Mother Teresa and the Dems would howl about separation of Church and State.

I am not going to buy into the obvious, concerted and relentless campaign to delegitimize his Presidency, no matter what I thought of him as a candidate. I will agree with him where I can, disagree otherwise, but I am not going to do what you are doing, cherry picking anti-Trump propaganda to post here.

You might as well get over Jeb Bush and do the same.

  433. Robbie says:

All of this discussion about Trump’s NSC and Bolton aside, I recognize it will be received very well by the conservative base and Rush because Bolton has been a hawkish, combative, and long time fixture on FoxNews. It will play well with Trump’s core base.

I just believe Trump has already gotten himself into a position, thanks to early miscues, where it’s important he surround himself with highly credible people to ease growing worries about him.

  434. Robbie says:

    Jason

Trump’s entitled to his own staff, but that doesn’t mean the choices shouldn’t be scrutinized. And given his rocky start, scrutiny is only going to increase.

I also don’t like the media’s clear efforts to delegitimize his election and presidency. I have felt from the beginning the NYT story on Russia was garbage just as was the effort to promote the “dossier”.

Still, it’s Trump’s erratic nature that has brought on plenty of the scrutiny. Had Romney won in 2012 and hired Bolton for something, eyebrows would have been raised, but no one would have ever worried about whether he had hired a professional staff in the White House.

In the end, I’m far less concerned about Bolton than I am about the process he might inherit.

    – This is conspiratorial nonsense and it’s disappointing to see it coming from you. No one is looking to disconnect Trump from his voters. And frankly, there is little chance, short of a recession or war, that Trump’s base will abandon him. If they stuck with him through the Khan mess and the Access Hollywood tape, they aren’t going to lose trust in him. Honestly, he could probably nominate John Kerry to something and his base would say it’s fine. Why? The base believes in Trump personally.

More importantly, Trump surrounding himself with the best and the brightest is, after all, exactly what he promised to do in the campaign. Or have you forgotten that? Are you really going to make the case Harward or Petraeus were looking to sideline Trump so they could cut him off and ruin him? If that’s what you were suggesting, then that’s just nutty.

Both Harward and Petraeus saw the dysfunction on the NSC and wanted to bring order to it by hiring staff that would do that very thing. As an example, Politico just posted a story that a senior NSC staffer was fired yesterday because he gave a speech where he lit into Trump, Bannon, Kushner, and even Ivanka. He also revealed embarrassing details about Trump’s call with Mexico. So in other words, the very dysfunction these men wanted to root out was on full display.

One small problem. The intelligence officer quoted above was actually Aldrich Ames, a CIA traitor whose crime of treason in the 1980s and 1990s resulted in the compromise of more than 100 assets. Many were tortured and executed as a result.

Ames’ flawed logic is eerily similar to that of his present-day colleagues who are engaged in a shadow war with their commander in chief. They, too, have decided that their superior judgment is more important than following the law.”

Looks like President Trump is side stepping Gov. Brown regarding the Oroville Dam crisis:

Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-District 1) toured the grounds Friday.

“Look, we have got to rebuilt the old bridges, we’ve got to rebuild the old highways, we’ve got to re-do the existing levees and do the maintenance,” the congressman said.

“Rep. LaMalfa is hoping federal funds will reimburse Sutter Butte Flood Control Agency the $5 million price tag for the project.

“We have the president’s attention, (President Donald Trump) called me back a couple days ago to get a little bit more detail about what’s going on, and he assured me that it has his attention,” Rep. LaMalfa shared. “(President Trump) will do everything he can to direct people to do what’s appropriate.”

  545. SanDiegoCitizen says:

Another huge California dam in in trouble. Just announced the Don Pedro Dam spillway may be opened as early as Tuesday. Its presently at 98% capacity, and they finally are trying to drain some of it.

“The last time the spillway was opened was in 1997, and resulted in major flooding: “During that flood, more than 70,000 cubic feet of water per second poured out of the reservoir, including down the unlined emergency spillway. The torrent scoured out dirt and trees, destroyed a road and dumped debris in the river channel downstream. Afterward, the district had to remove “thousands and thousands and thousands of cubic yard of dirt and debris from the river,” said Curtain.

Despite that damage, Curtain said the emergency spillway “functioned exactly as it was supposed to.” Downstream? It was a different picture.

In and around Modesto, hundreds of homes were flooded, along with three sewage treatment plants, which gushed raw sewage into the Tuolumne River. While use of the emergency spillway prevented water from destroying New Don Pedro Dam, the levees downstream were easily overwhelmed by the 70,000 cfs surging from the reservoir.”

Let’s say a young doctor performed 100 abortions. They decided to never perform another one. Instead, they go on to invent a procedure that saves countless children from leukemia. They can never undo what they did before. They have not redeemed themselves in my judgment.

I could come up with other examples. Drunk driver kills a child but then starts a children’s hospital. Before Wes says it – GWB never redeemed himself from the DUI. He just didn’t do it again. He was a better person for that but not redeemed.

Bitter, Roe eventually regretted her part in that court decision permitting abortion. She later did an about-face, joining the Right to Life movement.

Political activists, however, are known for choosing vulnerable people, easily exploited, in order to illustrate a need for some leftist agenda item to be enacted. I think this is what happened to a young and “vulnerable” Roe.

  562. janz says:

#587. This same guy reportedly also made some “awkward” comments directed at Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, regarding how attractive she was. I wonder if this was the lit fuse leading to his firing, rather than his disgruntlement with being left out of the inner policy-making circle.

I was just watching the segment where they are interviewing a Latina for Trump in Arizona when Florida, Utah, and Iowa are called.

    Her excitement is priceless.

  570. Mr.Vito says:

Tina, I saw you put a question mark… I would be as wary of Charles Johnson’s unnamed source at this point, as I would of those from WAPO and the like.

I would note that in an effort to find leaks, any sort of information could be getting out as an effort to find the mole.

  571. jason says:

Yes I watched all of Telemundo.

While they did have the Latina for Trump, most of the interviewees thought the world would end.

  572. jason says:

At first glance it’s too obvious as the source of the leaks but let’s see.

And if Priebus wanted to damage Trump, he passed up dozens of great opportunities during the campaign.

  573. janz says:

Tina, that story, about the leaking source, doesn’t make sense to me, especially as it also implicates Reince Priebus as collaborating with Walsh to “get rid of Trump.”

  574. jason says:

ohn McCain’s the guy who’s advocated for war everywhere,” Paul”

Personally I prefer they guys with a realistic foreign policy view than a moron like Rand Paul who thinks Iran is not a threat and that terrorists will be nice to you if you are nice to them.

  575. Mr.Vito says:

“And if Priebus wanted to damage Trump, he passed up dozens of great opportunities during the campaign.”

    -jason

Tina, that story, about the leaking source, doesn’t make sense to me, especially as it also implicates Reince Priebus as collaborating with Walsh to “get rid of Trump.”

    -janz

Well, what could make sense if you want to trust Reince is that he is playing double agent to expose the mole.

If you do not want to trust Reince, you could say that Reince wanted to make sure the Republicans won with Trump so Hillary would lose and then get him replaced with Pence or Ryan.

But, I think speculation is all wild-eyed at this point.

  576. Mr.Vito says:

re: “McCain’s the guy who’s advocated for war everywhere,” Paul”

He does have a point though. You would think McCain would prefer waterboarding to war. You would think a person that joked about Bomb-Bomb-Bomb-Bomb-Bomb-Iran would give Trump a little leeway with his comments. You wold also think a person with the courage to bad-mouth Trump to other countries might have been a little more vocal about doing so to his own constituents rather than just not defending him.

  577. SanDiegoCitizen says:

We’re just a month into the Trump presidency, and already so many are wondering: How can we end it?

One poll from Public Policy Polling found that as many Americans — 46 percent — favor impeachment of President Trump as oppose it. Ladbrokes, the betting website, offers even odds that Trump will resign or leave office through impeachment before his term ends.

Sky Bet, another site, is taking wagers on whether Trump will be out of office by July.

  587. janz says:

Cont….Reince Priebus has now been involved in two controversial news stories. The first surrounded buzz that he and Bannon were battling each other over control. It was refuted by the WH. Now you have Priebus again being brought into a co-conspirator role aimed at president Trump. Maybe Flynn was the first one insiders aimed at to “delete.” Now, insiders may be turning their gaze onto Priebus as the next appointee to leave under a cloud of conflict.

  597. Wes says:

Ironically LisaB posts something about people living in basements just about the time Bitter and Jason start discussing the finer plot points of a TV show based on a comic book.

  598. jason says:

wes is too intellectual to follow Walking Dead.

This is good, we are all for diversity at HHR.

  599. Wes says:

it’s nothing do with being intellectual. A big chunk of my voracious reading comes from the SF and horror genres, which Walking Dead links in being a story about societal breakdown caused by a pandemic creating an endlessly resupplied armada of anthropophagous zombies.

I even read some of the graphic novels years before AMC premiered the series.

As I do with Game of Thrones though, I refuse to look at the latest “cool” show and think I have jump on the bandwagon.

  600. Bitterlaw says:

Wes once criticized me for liking The Walking Dead because I said that I don’t read comic books. He claimed that I was a hypocrite (of course, he claims that often). Now, he says that he read a few of the books but won’t watch a show “based on a comic book” just because the show is considered “cool.”

    I love this place.

  601. Bitterlaw says:

To be honest, my eyes have gotten so bad that I have not been able to read a book in more than a year. I just bought reading glasses and hope they help. I read most things off a screen now. At work, I scan most things so I can read them on the computer.

  602. Bitterlaw says:

I have reconsidered my original position. I do not have an interest in comics but I do appreciate the creativity that goes into them.

  603. Bitterlaw says:

I knew that it would have to happen eventually. I am critical of Christie for an ad that I just heard. He encouraged people to reach out to get help dealing with the “disease of addiction.” Sorry, Governor. I reject the idea that addiction is a disease. It is a character flaw and a weakness that is result of bad choices.

  604. Barrett says:

The AMA would disagree with you Bitter. But you are a lawyer, argue it however you’d like.

  605. Bitterlaw says:

    Barrett – I’m not a doctor. I’m a judgmental A-hole.

I hope that you are doing well. My nephew is going to his meetings so I hope he is doing well, too. I have never pretended that it is an easy road. I just do not place it in the same category as leukemia, ALS, or most other diseases. If it has to be considered a disease, it is more like the self-inflicted conditions like Type 2 diabetes caused by being overweight or lung cancer caused by smoking.

  606. Mr.Vito says:

“To be honest, my eyes have gotten so bad that I have not been able to read a book in more than a year.”

To be honest, I haven’t had the heart to tell you that you’ve actually been coaching volleyball for weeks. The girls call you Mr.Magoo.

  607. Wes says:

Bitterlaw is a judgmental A-hole–to everyone other than GWB, whose colossal failure of a presidency he defends with all the remarkable gusto of a Stockholm Syndrome victim.

  608. Bitterlaw says:

The Confederacy’s greatest apologist weighs in. Good morning, Wes.

  609. Bitterlaw says:

Considering how harsh I am in judging myself, I feel comfortable in judging everybody else.

Wes always seems to forget that I said repeatedly that GWB spent too much and ordered the surge too late.

  610. Trump says:

The ersatz bitter lawyer thinks everyone is as stupid as he is.

    Pathetic.

  611. Wes says:

Well, Bitter, unlike GWB, i didn’t see the Confederacy sit back and do nothing for nearly five years while foreign terrorists publicly tortured and murdered thousands at will.

  612. Bitterlaw says:

i didn’t see the Confederacy sit back and do nothing for nearly five years while foreign terrorists publicly tortured and murdered thousands at will.

No. They tortured and worked millions until they died in slavery. Good effort, Wes.

  613. Wes says:

Bitterlaw always pulls out his canards.

While, yes, slavery was wrong (except from your perspective in Kentucky, Missouri, West Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, and Tennessee, where Lincoln in the Emancipation Proclamation said it was fine), Hollywood dramatizations such as Roots, Amistad, and Django Ubchained turn American slavery into another Nazi Holocaust–I know you, being wholly unimaginative as a debator, are inevitably going to justify Godwin’s Law–for dramatic purposes.

All records from the time indicate American slavery didn’t involve mass torture or starvings or executions, though brutality did indeed exist. You’d make a much stronger case against the evils of slavery if you stuck to actual facts and didn’t engage in pulp fiction-level distortions culled from overblown Quentin Tarantino movies and completely divorced from known reality.

You’re too infantile to do actual research beyond watching Django Unchained and make a case based on facts rather than Hollywood dramatizations though.

  614. Bitterlaw says:

All records from the time indicate American slavery didn’t involve mass torture or starvings or executions, though brutality did indeed exist. You’d make a much stronger case against the evils of slavery if you stuck to actual facts

Yeah. Rape, beatings, selling people away from their families, maiming slaves who escaped and were recaptured, and the right to punish or execute a slave without having to go to court were just a big Zzzzzzzz to Wes because Django Unchained sucked as a movie.

  615. Wes says:

Bitterlaw’s firm must be Dewey, Cheatham, and Howe given his utter lack of debating ability.

I never said such things were of no concern. I said there are legitimate arguments against slavery that have nothing to do with your cartton-style arguments of wanton mass murders.

You should try to keep up next time.

You do know slavers in the six states Lincoln allowed slavery in in the Emancipation Proclamation were no different in general from slavers in the other other states, I imagine.

I find it interesting Lincoln gets a pass from you for explicitly allowing the continuation of the atrocities you pretend to consider to be outrageous when engaged in by others. (We all know it’s just an act, Bitter. You’re a virulently anti-Southern bigot and pick the easiest thing to use as a shibboleth to base your fanatical hatred on.)

You mused upthread about my calling you a hypocrite. There’s why.
