    Oprah in a tv debate.

    LOL

  3. mnw says:

    Yawn. Let’s win ‘18 first.

    Lisa

I never heard an attorney say that he/she was “in the legal field” either.

    Fishy as hell.

  4. lisab says:

surgeond don’t usually say they are in the medical field

  5. Tina says:

Reports of sessions just sitting there and doing nothing, do not appear accurate

  7. lisab says:

    i am in fashion …

well … i worked at the gap & eddie bauer

  8. Proud Obamacon says:

LOL Groper in Chief stuck in the 30s against Oprah. Tina still pushing the Florida push poll.

I see MNW and Phil are back. Where’s the source Phil? MNW how’s your wet dream about slapping women and taking compromising pics of them against their will?

  9. Bitterlaw says:

Plus, there are 3 actual attys here, with a combined total of appx 75 yrs practicing law.

I’m not sue I still count since my office is in the suburbs rather than Philadelphiia.

  10. Bitterlaw says:

Laughable considering I have a college degree with honors, and three masters degrees with honors. I know several ancient languages and can pick up a 1st century papyrus from the Greek speaking world and read it.

Zzzzzzz. Walt can do it, too. Of course, he may have written the original.

  11. Bitterlaw says:

I believe that mnw is a lawyer. Why would anybody claim to be that unless they were a lawyer?

  12. Bitterlaw says:

In 25 years I have never heard a lawyer say they are in “the legal field.”

  13. Phil says:

Burning issue that must be addressed:

Should the sh*t hole that is Haiti be called a sh*t hole.

Glad to see the Left, never Trumpers, and our professional “journalists” in the MSM are on case. Thank God the burning issue of our time is being addressed. The country is saved.

  14. Phil says:

Walt DID write the original – and did a really good job I might add.

  15. lisab says:

obviously the dems don’t use bad language

    and the snowflakes got scared

  16. Phil says:

House Dems to censure Trump on horrible language.

    Good luck with that.

  17. Tina says:

Is this because of the use of chain migration?

I, Cash Cow, am in the hay field.

  19. Walt says:

    Bitter and Phil,

    ????, ????????, ??????.
    ?? ????? ?? ??.

  20. SanDiegoCitizen says:

I will repeat my question to Obamacon from the last thread:

    68. “Accounting, 11 years. That explains why I can actually do math and all you can do is spin and manipulate facts until they suit your point of view. Enlightening!”

    Ok, I’ll bite.

What type of accounting degree do you have Obamacon? And what professional accounting organizations do you belong too?

  21. Walt says:

    I typed above, in Greek:

    “I came, I thought, I wrote.
    What can I say.”
    _________________________
    Hal does not like Greek…

  22. CashCow TM says:

They say I am out standing in my field….

  23. mnw says:

    RE; Obamacon post #9 above:

Does anybody have any idea what he’s talking about with “the masturbation fantasy” reference? I don’t. I think db is right, that he just types vulgar obscene stuff— with no connection to reality.

  24. CashCow TM says:

    Walt,

Hal said that typing in anything other than the English alphabet gives him hives.

  25. SanDiegoCitizen says:

    24. “They say I am out standing in my field….”

Yes, but your field can be limited by how many experts there are in it at a given time.

  26. DW says:

Walt, you did the ancient world a great service when in Pergamum you invented parchment to write on after the Egyptians cut off the supply of papyri. It was probably not an accident that you chose the skins of sheep and goats instead of cows.

  27. Cash Cow TM says:

Walt said he actually invented parchment not to WRITE on, but to WIPE on after a…you know…but others took his parchment and decided to write things on it. Well, they did not actually take the parchment that Walt USED…

It gave Walt the idea of making toilet paper with things written on it.

  28. mnw says:

Bear with me. This goes to Obamacon claiming to be a CPA.

I can tell instantly if someone who claims to be an atty is one. Just answer these 3 questions instantly— just type, NO TESEARCH. Any lawyer can answer these within 5-10 seconds. Non-lawyers can’t (and BL can probably think of better test questions than I can. But these will suffice. Again, just TYPE— show u have some basic familiarity with the term— don’t disappear for 5 minutes to commune with Google.

Identify in as few words as possible

    1) fee tail male

    2) stare decisis

    3) Palsgraf v. Long Island Rail Road

  29. Phil says:

    25

Don’t worry about it. The troll is a leftist clown living in his parent’s basement. Not worth your time.

  30. Walt says:

“Walt, you did the ancient world a great service when in Pergamum you invented parchment…”
    _____________________________________
It was not in Pergamum…it was in a small town near there.

  31. Walt says:

Why is Cash Cow out standing in the field?

She IS doing an outstanding job of standing out in her field.

  32. Cash Cow TM says:

    1) fee tail male
    a male prostitute

    2) stare decisis
    a wonderful traditional Christmastime song

    3) Palsgraf v. Long Island Rail Road
some court case about putting Long Island Ice Tea in pottery dishes

    (How’d I do?)

  33. mnw says:

Now, a real CPA could pose 3 similar questions to Obamacon, & of course he wouldn’t be able to answer them, because he’s a troll fraudster.

Here are the answers for the questions above, in very simple basic terms:

    1) A property conveyance that attempts to restrict the ability of the buyer/donee to convey to anybody except male heirs.

    2) The doctrine that courts should respect precedent.

    3) Famous tort case restricting negligence liability to those who are owed a duty of due care.

Now… if Obamacon is really a CPA, another CPA can pose similar questions to him which he SHOULD be able to answer instantly.

    P.S.

    BL

Are these OK questions to separate attys from imposters?

    2)

Ask yourselves why were the loons out in large nubees,

  37. mnw says:

I just want Obamacon to put up or shut up — admit he’s a fraud or prove he isn’t.

  38. NYCmike says:

I would have gotten the first one being I watched Downton Abbey…..it reminded me when they spoke about the “end tail” in the first season. ( is it “entail”?)

And I know what “stare at the dices” is.

  39. Cash Cow TM says:

Ron Reagan was the best speechifier since JFK.

GWB was damn near a mute at times.

BHO was a masterful speechifying bullcrapper.

DJT is self destructive with his tweets and the shocking statements that come out of his autistic and ignorant mouth. All he does is to give ammo to those who want to execute him.

DJT has no filter to know what is apropriate to say or not say in different settings. He is an autistic fool.

  40. Proud Obamacon says:

LOL well MNW, if you can show me where I said I was a CPA, I would surely appreciate liar. Hint, never claimed to be a CPA but then again facts don’t matter much to you.

Do yall want me to post my degrees? Hell, should I post a pic of my wife and 2 kids and dogs too? LOL

I wonder yall are obsessed with my career and personal life. Why can’t you focus on your hero, the Orange Moron? Oh I know why LOL

  41. Proud Obamacon says:

Now since yall so interested in me, I’m going to put my 3yr old girl to bed. If she cooperates, I’ll be back. If not, then I won’t. And no, I won’t show you pictures. You’ll just have to take my word for it.

Or as you like to call it, I’m going to KOS to get talking points…

    Whatever floats yall boats.

  42. Cash Cow TM says:

I am learning to handle the mouse….

  43. Cash Cow TM says:

The head honcho (High Bishop or whatever) in the Balto-Washington conference of the UM Church has put out and distributed a letter excoriating DJT for what he reportedly said about Haiti or wherever being a poop hole and saying it probes DJT is unfit to serve as president, all good Methodists must do everything in their power to…blah..blah…blah.

Basically work to remove DJT from office–without actually saying those words.

  44. mnw says:

    Obamacon

What does “accountancy” mean in your case? You used the term, not us.

If you’re not an accountant, what is it you claim to DO exactly?

You asked me for the same info about my profession. Just help us understand what “accountancy” means, please.

  45. Bitterlaw says:

Another day of being embarrassed by Trump AND relieved that Hillary is not President.

    Both can be true.

  46. lisab says:

in fairness, not all accountants are cpas

but we certainly called it, (that he was not a cpa).

    he could be a bookkeeper.

it is just debits and credits.

    gender studies and fine arts?

  48. Tina says:

Remember, turbin durbin has lied before. In 2013, turbin said that an r spoke ill will toward obumbler at a meeting. Obumblers press secretary and others said it was not true,

    Turbin Durb8n lies.

Lies because his amnesty proposal was rejected.

  49. lisab says:

Do yall want me to post my degrees?
    —————————————

marxist economic theory and fashion design?

  50. mnw says:

    Lisa

I’d also like to hear some explanation from our accountancy expert regarding his obscene rant, in which he accused me of “jacking off to pictures of women being slapped.”

As db correctly said, accountancyboy is just a potty mouth— no connection to anything real.

And “bookkeeper” is probably right, btw.

  51. Tina says:

Maybe accounts pabale clerk. A bill payer.

  52. mnw says:

Remember how this accountancy thing started? On the last thread, this troll actually posted:

“Go ahead and tell us about YOUR background since it’s so important! Job, etc. Spill it, sport! How do we knowvyou’re A real lawyer??”

    (corrected for grammar and spelling)

  53. mnw says:

But where does he get all the potty mouth/masturbation stuff?

  54. lisab says:

I’d also like to hear some explanation from our accountancy expert regarding his obscene rant,
    ——————————————

robbie also uses bizarre obscene language at times

i can see why they are upset by the s-word /sarc

  55. dblaikie says:

Posters like P Obamacon just need to be ignored. This is a place where you are allowed to post stuff that is thoughtful (from both sides of the spectrum) to just plain crap. That is the way it should be in an open forum like HHR, but it doesn’t mean you have to take nonsense seriously or go down into stinking mud of some posters.

  56. Proud Obamacon says:

#54 Nice try Liar. Actually, this all started because yall would rather talk about anything other than your orange hero. Instead of addressing my points, you want to instead make up chit about me like living in parent’s basement etc etc yawn, same old chit.

I’ve been in accounting 11 years now. Not a CPA, looking at MBA actually. IF you want more info out of me, you have to post the same info about yourself first. And hell why bother, when I told yall I was an accountant, the response was “Rubbish”.

  57. Cash Cow TM says:

DJT should have said places like Haiti are cesspools…

While I know there are many wonderful people in Haiti, it is a cesspool as compared to say……..Mar Largo

  58. Cash Cow TM says:

    I will post my degrees…

50 degrees right now, but there is a cold wave that will roll through here tonight.

  59. mnw says:

Is “yall” supposed to be his boat, i.e., “yawl”?

Or is at supposed to be the contraction of “you all,” i.e., “y’all”?

If it’s the latter, spellcheck automatically changes “yall” to “y’all.”

So he must try really HARD to make SURE we know he can’t write standard English.

    Accountancy my adz.

  60. Cash Cow TM says:

When I have been in the loco week, I tilt bout 5 degrees to the right.

  61. Proud Obamacon says:

MNW continuing with the personal attacks… nice dude, you must be fun to be around.

  62. mnw says:

Why does he post all the masturbation stuff, though?

  63. SanDiegoCitizen says:

    59. “DJT should have said places like Haiti are cesspools…”

Most Haitians would probably agree. When they move to the U.S. they often do very well. Mia Love is an example. Some of the most industrious people I know come from Nigeria; many work for major corporations, and look down upon people in this country who fail to achieve.

  64. lisab says:

    looking at MBA actually
    —————————

    looking is easy

  65. mnw says:

    11 YEARS of looking?

  66. lisab says:

so by accountant … do you do bookkeeping?

  67. Big Joe says:

I strongly believe that the media loves the sh*thole story because now they can all say “Sh*thole” all day and all night.

    Sh*thole sh*thole sh*thole.

My guess is that they are secretly hoping that Trump says something worst like M0therfukker so that they can start saying it too.

    Big Joe

  68. Big Joe says:

    *worse not *worst

  69. mnw says:

I doubt he has the guts to respond to db’s post 57 above.

  70. Proud Obamacon says:

Yeah looking into the requirements, you don’t just go pick up an MBA at your local bookstore.

There’s the GMAT, there’s actual work experience, and of course doing it all while juggling work and a family. So yeah, I’m looking into it. At first, I was happy to get a nice job, now I’m to take it to the next level with an MBA. It’s a very typical path in the accounting profession.

Or as MNW would say, this is “Rubbish” and I’m just sitting in my parent’s basement.

  71. mnw says:

What is it with all the masturbation potty talk? You don’t consider that to be “personal attacks”?

  72. lisab says:

i can kind of believe he might be a bookkeeper

that would be an awful job

  73. lisab says:

    the gmat is easy

and you don’t need 11 years of experience to apply to an MBA program

    more like 2

  74. Proud Obamacon says:

You said yourself you are ok with what the MO governor did, buddy.

  75. mnw says:

bookkeeper is respectable and valuable work. But where would a bookkeeper come up with all that arrogance? and condescension?

  76. Proud Obamacon says:

    “the gmat is easy

and you don’t need 11 years of experience to apply to an MBA program”

I know that. Already passed the GMAT. Not going to commit to an MBA program until I’m sure I have enough time. Maybe next year when my daughter starts kindergarten. Thanks for taking such interest in my career.

  77. mnw says:

But why does that translate to accusing me of masturbating to photos of women being slapped?

(I assure you I’m not your “buddy.” I might throw you a couple of bucks to wash my car, perhaps.)

  78. lisab says:

    Already passed the GMAT.
    —————————

you don’t pass the gmat, you get a score

actually several scores, iirc one in math, one in english and one in writing

    it is not pass/fail

  79. Proud Obamacon says:

Well buddy, its because that’s what I’m sure you are doing. Just like you’re so sure that I’m living in my parents’ basement.

  80. mnw says:

How would you respond to db in post 57?

    (Hint: he won’t. Gutless.)

  81. Proud Obamacon says:

Wow LisaB, I know that. You need a minimum score in order to move forward with the MBA process. I achieved that score. Hence, I passed.

  82. Proud Obamacon says:

MNW, my buddy, what is there to respond to in 57?

  83. lisab says:

there is no “minimum” score to get into an mba program. some schools don’t even use them.

  84. Proud Obamacon says:

There are percentiles. Score too low and you are not MBA material. The goal is to not score that low so that you can continue the MBA pursuit. This is not rocket science.

  85. lisab says:

The goal is to not score that low so that you can continue the MBA pursuit. This is not rocket science.
    —————————-

no it isn’t, they just want your money … mba programs are cash cows for schools … the only score they care about is your credit score.

  86. mnw says:

You agree with db’s characterization of your posts as “nonsense” & “stinking obscene mud”?

Do you consider “masturbating to photos of women being slapped” something OTHER than a “personal attack”— you know, the “personal attack” you resented in post 63?

  87. lisab says:

why not try wgu? you make your own schedule

  88. Phil says:

    87

    Yep, pretty much, Lisa.

  89. Proud Obamacon says:

“hey just want your money … mba programs are cash cows for schools”

I would agree with this. Unfortunately, most schools do require a minimum score/percentile. There may be some that will admit anyone, but I’m not interested in those schools.

  90. Proud Obamacon says:

WGU is online. My employer, and many others, don’t give online business schools as much credibility so that’s not an option, unfortunately. It would be nice though, as it would be easier to fit into my schedule.

    Why are you so interested?

  91. lisab says:

There may be some that will admit anyone
    ———————————–

harvard does not accept the gmat
    or mit
    or wharton
    or cornell
    or ucla
    or usc
    or bu
    or kellog
    or neu
    or bu

    etc.

    they don’t just admit anyone

  92. mnw says:

We are just curious as to the source of your unjustified arrogance and compulsive potty mouth.

  93. lisab says:

    Why are you so interested?
    ——————————-

if you went to school, you might learn something.

  94. Proud Obamacon says:

So what’s your point Lisa? That those schools don’t admit anyone but also don’t require GMAT? That’s cool, schools are different. I have gone ahead and taken the GMAT because many schools do require it. I have my bases covered. This allows me to apply to schools that require the GMAT and schools that don’t. Sorry if that bothers you.

  95. mnw says:

He seems to be an autodidact in the field of masturbation.

  96. SanDiegoCitizen says:

    96. “So what’s your point…”

No matter how much we pick on you, its nice to hear you are looking at a business degree. The economy is doing very well now, and the job market is good — so why not take advantage of it?

  97. lisab says:

you understand an mba is a generic degree …

    a masters in business administration

basically a survey in all the different business areas … a course in management, marketing, accounting, econ, stats, info systems, finance, hr, op managment etc.

you might want to look at a more specific degree, say in accountancy, where you would take 6 to 10 course in accounting, i.e. learn in depth knowledge

  98. Phil says:

My son is half wat through his MBA. He works in the business Dept at A&M. He has his eye on another position and the MBA will definitely open several doors for him at the next level. Well worth it to him.

  99. lisab says:

    Sorry if that bothers you.
    —————————-

it doesn’t bother me, on the contrary, i encourage you to go to school.

  100. lisab says:

He works in the business Dept at A&M. He has his eye on another position and the MBA will definitely open several doors for him at the next level. Well worth it to him.
    —————————————–

he is lucky. if you look at the degree — as taught at most schools — it is just their 4 year bachelor’s program taught in 2 years, i.e. without the gen ed courses like history, comp, etc.

it is best for those who do not have a business undergrad degree.

  101. Proud Obamacon says:

Yes Lisa, I’m well aware that MBA is generic. A CPA (which is a credential) would be specific.

My plan is to go for the MBA first before specializing. This will keep many options available. I’ve done plenty of research and have networked with many professionals who have taken the same path. Almost all agree that you don’t specialize this early.

    Thanks for the suggestion though.

  102. lisab says:

Almost all agree that you don’t specialize this early.
    ——————————————

you have been an accountant for 11 years …

    that is not early

  103. lisab says:

My plan is to go for the MBA first before specializing.
    ——————————–

sooooooooo … your plan is to get two masters?

  104. Proud Obamacon says:

I’d like to keep my options open and am not sure what I want to specialize in yet. So in a situation like this, it would be too early regardless of my 11 years.

I hear you though. I’ve prioritized family over career.

  105. Proud Obamacon says:

MBA, and then maybe CPA. I hear it’s a killer combo.

Focused on the MBA first, though.

  106. Phil says:

    102

Lisa, yes. In my son’s situation he does have his undergrad degree in business. It just so happens that the specific position he is looking at has an MBA requirement. He says what you said – lots of overlap with his undergrad course work.

My brother in law got his undergrad degree in poly sci and then went back and got his MBA.

  107. lisab says:

MBA, and then maybe CPA. I hear it’s a killer combo.
    ————————————

well, … yes and no. cpa firms are not able to consult like they used to … 20 years ago mba + cpa meant big money

but now cpa firms are restricted from that … the whole anderson consulting/anderson cpa firm debacle.

being a cpa is good money. being a consultant can be good money.

frankly, if you are an accountant already you will probably find mba school mostly a waste of time, assuming your undergrad was in business.

now getting a cpa … that would be difficult and lucrative.

not that i would be caught dead doing a cash flow statement

  108. lisab says:

My brother in law got his undergrad degree in poly sci and then went back and got his MBA.
    ———————

then it is clearly valuable assuming he wants to be in business … although perhaps difficult to cram four years of business school into two years.

a poli-sci major should have had stats though, so his math should be ok.

  109. lisab says:

i have a masters in education, so you are in my wheelhouse now 🙂

  110. lisab says:

now getting a cpa … that would be difficult and lucrative.
    ————————-

i mean lucrative in the sense of mind numbing, soul crushing boring work for which you get paid well

  111. Phil says:

He has run his own business for 25 years and served two terms as mayor of his home city (population 40K). He was just elected county commissioner. I guess he got the most out of both degrees as it turned out.

  112. Proud Obamacon says:

I’m not a big fan of returning to school, which is probably the real reason for my procrastination. But the MBA does help big time with opportunities, job security, and fatter paycheck.

The MBA+CPA combo may not be as marketable as it once was, you’re right. However, after completing my MBA, I will have enough credits to qualify for the CPA exam, so might as well. Can’t hurt.

  113. lisab says:

He has run his own business for 25 years …
    —————————————–

    that is quite impressive

  114. Phil says:

Yeah, he’s done pretty well. Me, I went into education. No money, but what the hell…. I liked it. God help me. LOL

  115. lisab says:

However, after completing my MBA, I will have enough credits to qualify for the CPA exam, so might as well. Can’t hurt.
    ——————————-

    suppose it can’t hurt.

but the freaking school loans can …

all i am saying is that there are masters degrees, IN BUSINESS, that are specialized degrees that cost less and where you would learn more in depth knowledge in one area.

oh … and just fyi, be sure you make checking out the job placement office of the schools you are applying for.

indiana university, where my hubby got his mba, had a huge office dedicated to it, where they would give the recruiters lavish meals and the best accomodations … because they wanted the recruiters to visit

Speaking of 7-Eleven, did you folks read about the recent ICE raids at 7-Eleven? Simultaneously in multiple states?

That type of enforcement action was expressly FORBIDDEN during Zero’ s administration. The word “raid” itself was forbidden too— just like “Islamic terror” was forbidden.

So, there really is a new sheriff in town!

    “No match” letters:

Every new employee has to fill out an I-9 Employment Eligibility Verifications form, in which the prospective employee lists his SSN #.

Social Security sends out “no match” letters to the employer when the SSN # is bogus.

Employers like 7-Eleven often have HUGE stacks of unopened no match letters stuck in a back office somewhere, collecting dust. Every ICE agent knows this.

The whole system designed to protect American woekers’ right to lawful employment is, in other words, a big, expensive joke!

Hiring illegal aliens is a criminal offense (not much of one, but nonetheless). How many employers you figure Holder’s DOJ prosecuted?

Knowingly providing a false SSN # on an I-9 is a felony too. You think Zero & Holder brought a lot of THOSE cases?

Utah will support Trump if he is the Republican nominee in 2020. Although he is a total clown, his economic policies have been good for the country. On this, I share Bitter’s position, you hold your nose and vote for Trump over some crazy leftist.

Here is the Deseret News, a Mormon-owned paper, comments regarding the poll:

“SALT LAKE CITY — Mormons nationwide gave President Donald Trump a 61 percent approval rating over the past year, higher than any religious group, in polling released Friday by Gallup.
“At first glance, it seems surprising given everything that we’ve read and seen” since Trump finished a distant third in the March 2016 Utah Republican caucus vote, said BYU political science professor Quin Monson, a pollster himself.
But Monson said the poll is measuring support for the president’s policies, not necessarily how he has conducted himself in office — something that has turned off many Mormons.
“They’re happy with some of his policies but unhappy with his style — very unhappy in some cases,” Monson said. “With a normal Republican president, I would expect his approval among Mormons to be in the high 70s.”
For the plurality of Mormons, their backing of Trump is “sort of lukewarm approval,” he said. “This is not the same sort of gung-ho enthusiasm you might get for a Republican president. It’s lukewarm. It’s tepid. It’s begrudging”

Is $19 an hour ($39,000) a year too little? Apparently in California the unions feel that way, and the California legislature is helping them take on Tesla. Given Tesla’s financial condition, the workers may soon find themselves out of a job.

Musk had the sense to build his battery plant in neighboring Nevada, and I doubt will build any additional manufacturing plants in California, a state which is rapidly de-industrializing.

    ___________

“Then there are California legislators and Gov. Brown, who enacted legislation earlier this month threatening to withhold rebates on electric vehicles unless their manufacturers can be certified “as being fair and responsible in the treatment of their workers.”

The new law has stirred editorialists across the state, who have come down heavily on Tesla’s side. “Outrageous groveling to unions,” groused the San Jose Mercury; “a thinly veiled threat against an employer of thousands of Californians” was the description offered by the San Francisco Chronicle.
That may have hurt Tesla, a luxury brand that accounted for more than 21% of all rebate dollars last year, but only about 12.4% so far in 2017.
Still, it appears that the state’s shot was aimed chiefly at Tesla. The language was inspired by the California Labor Federation, which is affiliated with the UAW, which in turn is engaged in a ferocious unionization battle with Musk and Tesla.
“The big picture for us is that the auto manufacturing industry created at least two generations of middle-class families,” Angie Wei, chief of staff of the labor federation, told me. “Now, not only are we replacing combustion-engine cars, but we’re incentivizing it with public money. The question is whether that’s going to duplicate the middle-class life that was created for so many families.”
The unions say that won’t happen at the wage rates and working conditions typical in the electric vehicle industry. Tesla’s own figures put average annual hourly pay for Fremont workers who started in January 2013 at about $39,000, or a bit less than $19 an hour. “No one can survive in California on that,” says Wei, “especially in the Bay Area.” The corresponding hourly wage at General Motors, by Tesla’s reckoning, is nearly $24.

Suppose that I’m an employer not overly burdened by ethical scruples. Do I hire 1) a lawful American worker (USC* or LAPR*), or 2) an illegal alien?

    1) If I hire a lawful American worker, she can file a complaint with the Dept of Labor if I violate wages and hours rules, i.e., overtime pay requirements, etc.

If she gets hurt on the job, she’ll file a worker’s comp claim against me if I’m lucky, or sue me for negligence if I’m NOT so
    lucky.

She might also file an EEOC complaint— for example one of those pesky ‘hostile work environment’ claims that are increasingly commonplace.

If I fire her, she may sue me for unlawful discharge.

And what about her rights under the family and medical leave law if she gets pregnant? OR,

    2) I could hire an illegal alien, and sleep securely at night knowing she’ll NEVER cost me any extra money, because she’s in violation of the law just by being here, & she know that full well.

Which of the 2 workers do I hire? Who has the REAL hiring preference?

  223. SanDiegoCitizen says:

    216. Your question has a problem. You talk about hiring an illegal alien, and would then be able to sleep at night. But your question refers to a LAPR, a lawful alien permanent resident.

The lawful permanent resident, as opposed to someone on a work visa, could sue you in about the same way as an American worker.

If you have illegal workers, your business could be raided and the illegals arrested and you fined or prosecuted, so you should not be sleeping securely at night.

Meanwhile, in the People’s Republic of California, see kids, with massive student debts, working at such progressive bastions as Starkbucks, just a little over minimum wage. Sorry Obamacon, but your rich liberal icons not good employers in regards to pay. Supply and demand raises wages, not useless liberal policies.

  271. lisab says:

the above discussion also illustrates the real issue the dems have with working people

a.) “the tax cuts were tiny”. actually, $1000+ is significant to me and most working people.

b.) “the money is going to corporations”. actually, to working people’s retirement plans.

c.) “the rich are getting more profits” actually, we are KEEPING the money we earned … it is not the government’s money.

d.) “dont the poor deserve a tax cut?” actually, if they work they got a tax cut, and sometimes a raise and a bonus and a better economy in which they can sell their labor.

e.) “you got yours, i guess that is all you care about” actually, i EARNED mine. and i served my country, and work with troubled and disabled teens … do you?

being from massachusetts, i know this trick. they say they will “tax the rich”, which sounds great, and then pretty soon you find out they define you as rich.

  274. SanDiegoCitizen says:

    279. “the above discussion also illustrates the real issue the dems have with working people”

That is because the Democrats no longer want any involvement with working people; they have become tools of major corporations like Google. Here is a quote from a recent article on the close relationship Google had with Obama:

“Between January 2009 and October 2015, Google staffers gathered at the White House on 427 separate occasions. All told, 182 White House employees and 169 Google employees attended the meetings, with participation from almost every domestic policy and national security player in the West Wing.
The frequency of the meetings has increased practically every year, from 32 in 2009 to 97 in 2014. In the first 10 months of 2015, which is as far as the study goes, there were 85 Google meetings.
The most frequent visitor is Johanna Shelton, one of Google’s top lobbyists in Washington — officially its director of public policy. Shelton attended meetings at the White House on 94 different occasions.
The most Google-visited White House official is Todd Park, the U.S. chief technology officer from 2012 to 2014. In that short period, Park met with Google officials at the White House 22 times. Park’s replacement, current Chief Technology Officer Megan Smith, was a former Google vice president. She had five White House meetings as a Google representative, then 10 Google meetings as a White House representative.
The comprehensiveness of Google’s outreach jumps out from the data. You would expect some contact between Google and top technology policymakers like Park, Smith, Aneesh Chopra, Susan Crawford, and Vivek Kundra. But Google’s presence as an economic force and a communications tool gives the company an interest in virtually every aspect of public policy.”

    https://theintercept.com/2016/04/22/googles-remarkably-close-relationship-with-the-obama-white-house-in-two-charts/

It is a joke for Obamacon to claim the Democrats have any connection with working class Americans. I brought it out in the thread during the discussion, and he completely ignored it.
The Obama/Clinton political machine existed because it was funded by very wealthy people, particularly those in tech. It engaged in a particularly repugnant form of crony capitalism in favor of its supporters, who benefited from outsourcing and the de-industrializing the U.S.

    – Why do the Trumpers always feel the need to talk about Jeb Bush? The guy ran a terrible campaign and he left the race after just three primaries in February 2016 (23 months ago). Jeb was but a footnote. This would be like constantly blaming Jim Gilmore.

As for the second point, no other Republican who could have been elected (Rubio, Cruz, Kasich, etc.) would have spent the last year spending each day using their Twitter feed to make themselves look certifiable. None of the other candidates would have spent the last year embroiled in an investigation about Russia. None of the others would have surrounded themselves with a viper’s nest of advisors.

Republicans are going to beaten like mule this November because of Trump and Trump alone. His behavior as president the last year has turned people off and made his personal conduct in office, not the economy or relative peace the world, the issue. In normal circumstances with a roaring economy like this, a president would have an approval rating pushing 55%. Instead, Trump’s erratic behavior has him around 40%.

There would not have been Obamacare had GWB’s presidency not ended so disastrously and led to Democrats gains in 2006 and again in 2008. And the climate GWB regrettably created for the party led to Obama in 2008.

And the way things are going right now, we’re headed for 2018 and 2020 that could look a lot like 2006 and 2008. What’s happening now could easily lead us to President Elizabeth Warren in 2020 and single payer healthcare.

The simplistic answer is usually that a pilot and/or an airline has the “discretion” to deny boarding or even to kick you off the plane. Such action would be based, presumably, on 49 USC 44902(b): “Permissive Refusal. — Subject to regulations of the Under Secretary, an air carrier, intrastate air carrier, or foreign air carrier may refuse to transport a passenger or property the carrier decides is, or might be, inimical to safety,” and perhaps also on 14 CFR 121.533(d): “Each pilot in command of an aircraft is, during flight time, in command of the aircraft and crew and is responsible for the safety of the passengers, crewmembers, cargo, and airplane.”

    – I love how Jason consistently uses this worthless trope that I don’t like Trump because Jeb lost. It’s such a load of crap, but that’s what he does. I saw the handwriting on the wall in September 2015 that Jeb’s campaign was finished. And his campaign was finished because he was an awful candidate.

If I had a time machine, I’d love to go back to January 2015 and say Jeb should step aside and Romney should run. Romney was already polling around 40% at the time and I think candidates like Kasich and Rubio would have passed on the race making it a much narrower field. That would have made it far more difficult for Trump since he benefitted from a wide field. That’s conjecture though.

At the time, I was dating a red-head, so in my coolest voice, as they both walked by, short little Tom and this BEAUTIFUL tall Nicole, I looked right at her and said “Hey, Red.”

My girlfriend, who was looking at a piece of art, and was blissfully unaware of whom was walking by, turns around a second or two later, at which time I am facing her way again, and says to me “Did you say something?”.

You are Donnelly or McCaskill fighting for your life in a state Trump won by 20 points or so, so you got your hands full already… and the DEM leaders in Washington keep talking about… impeachment!! So YOU have to constantly answer questions about that!

Like you ain’t got enough trouble! What did Trump carry ND by, 40 points? Think Heitkamp wants to discuss the “i word”?

  480. lisab says:

even walmart employees have the opportunity
    ————————————

Here are the facts about working at Walmart. The average hourly associate has a total compensation package of $14.50 per hour. Full-time hourly associates make an average of $12.94 per hour in wages. On top of the pay, hourly associates receive quarterly bonuses based on store performance that average $580 per year. Employees are eligible for health insurance and, if they choose to sign up for it, Walmart pays 75 percent of the premium cost.

Hourly associates all can contribute to a 401(k) retirement plan and Walmart matches employee contributions for the first 6 percent of each employee’s pay. Employees can also buy company stock and Walmart will match those purchases with shares equal to 15 percent of those purchased by the employees.

  482. Tgca says:

    478

About 35% depending on what survey you follow. That’s a misnomer though. As folk grow in age, settle down, and marry, the percentage increases. I never contributed in my 20s even when I had a healthy income. I started in my 30s. The older one is, the more they contribute, generally more than 2x the millennials percentage.

Also, 401k is only part of savings. Folks that have homes can get a large portion of their retirement from that as well. I can sell my home at retirement and have a substantial amount to live on if needed for 10+ years. That’s why many smart retirees are dumping their homes in the northeast to retire to cheaper condos or rentals in FL. I see a lot of that here.

Savings and retirement strategy is complicated and varies by demographics too. Younger folks save less because they shop more with their income. However, anything that helps any group to save is better than just paying more taxes, discouraging savings, and hoping the govt will watch over you in retirement which is generally how many liberals view the world.

  483. lisab says:

    when the employer matches you

that is a 100% return on your investment!

are you sure you are mba material?

  484. Proud Obamacon says:

40-50% benefit by getting some extra peanuts in their 401ks? Ok, and that helps them today how? Where’s this immediate relief?

Wow $14.50 and able to contribute to a 401K? Hmm let’s see, on that salary, worker needs to buy food, pay rent, utilities, bills, etc. Will they have anything left to put into a 401k?

All BS. This is classic trickle down. Happy for the execs and corporations that they get to keep more of their money. But please stop saying how this is a great boon for the average Joe.

  485. Tgca says:

    LisaB

  486. Proud Obamacon says:

    “when the employer matches you

You have to contribute to get the match. How many folks making $14.50 contribute?

Thanks for the insults. I’d hit back but I don’t want to upset anyone. Apparently its ok to insult me, but not ok for me to insult back. Fine.

  487. NYCmike says:

    P.O.,

People have choices. My company provides the opportunity to invest in a 401k. In fact, 3 times in the last 20 years, the company made some distributions due to higher than expected profits, and we felt it was a good use of money to reward the workers who had produced the great results.

BUT, for the people who did NOT have a 401k, we did not set aside any money for them. They made a choice. Live with it.

  488. Proud Obamacon says:

TGCA, good post. So basically, those saying that this is great for workers because it grows their 401Ks are wrong. Less than half of workers even have 401K. Those that do certainly are not maxing out.

Again, peanuts. And peanuts that you can’t see until you retire which for some is decades away. By that time, the next recession would have wiped out their peanuts anyway.

  489. NYCmike says:

“But please stop saying how this is a great boon for the average Joe.”

    -Ok, here is the deal.

Republicans will stop saying this is a great boon, and Democrats will run on repealing the tax cuts.

    Go for it!

  490. lisab says:

some extra peanuts in their 401ks
    —————————————-
ummmmmmm … you obviously have not been saving …

compound interest and employee matching goes up quickly …

as an example, lets say you invested $2000 11 years ago, and your employer matched it which is normal, that money would have doubled by 2016 … so would have been $8000 a year ago, and now up 30-40% soooooo now would be $11,000!

if you invested $2000 every year like that, you would not be looking at peanuts

Does that qualify me to work in the “accounting field?” I hope so because if not, then I’ve been paid quite a bit to do nothing for a long time.

  495. lisab says:

You have to contribute to get the match. How many folks making $14.50 contribute?
    ———————————–

i worked retail for years for extra money …

however, that you obviously have not been saving, explains a lot

  496. Proud Obamacon says:

Lisa B again missing the point. I know how compound interest works. I have a 401K and a Roth and they are both doing great.

So for people like me, I’ll be ok.

For people who don’t have 401ks? Well if you have $0 in an account, compound interest does not apply. The majority of the workers fall in this category. So again I ask, for this majority what benefit do they see from the tax scam bill? Maybe a few peanuts due to the lower tax brackets.

  497. NYCmike says:

P.O. is speaking like a person who:

Oh I know why… yall don’t want to talk about the tax scam and the lie that it is great for workers and hurts the rich as the President claimed it would.

    bueller?! bueller?!! bueller?!!!

  508. Tgca says:

    501 PO

Thanks for acknowledging my GREAT post but I would argue all my posts are great. But that’s another discussion.

I think you miss the point. No one says that the tax cut or the 401k contributions alone will remedy workers problems or income levels. However, most have an opportunity in the US to do better and make decisions with their future, and that beats relying on the govt any day.

I once did charity work with an elderly lady who earned a Masters degree and spent her entire life spending her above average income on traveling the world until her 50s. Then when she retired she had nothing but all her photos of her trips and had to rely on govt housing and other support to supplement her retirement. How is that mentality the problem of those who behave more responsibly?

  509. lisab says:

    that is the thing po

you act like the dems were going to pass a huge tax cut for the middle class

    they were not

  519. Proud Obamacon says:

    TGCA, another great post!

I agree with you that folks should make the effort to take control of their life and finances and not have to rely on government or others. The reality is that most people are living paycheck to paycheck. Most don’t contribute to a retirement plan. And very very few contribute enough to have a good retirement.

However my anger stems from the lies that we are being fed by our government that this tax scam is great for average workers and is not meant to benefit the wealthy. The opposite is true and we all know it.

Strawmen about how the Dems don’t cut taxes are just that, strawmen. That is irrelevant.

  520. NYCmike says:

“Might move to safer investments soon like bonds, or diversify internationally. This bull is just about done, man.”

-If you think so. Of course, I will wait and allow my $$ to stay where they are, as I am also another 15-20 years away from retirement, and could withstand another correction or 2. I also have capital ready to go in case of a dip.

“Diversify internationally”? You think the rest of the world is a safer bet, and a surer bet, than a competitive United States of America, which is lowering the amount of regulation and tax burden each company will have?

    Oooooo-kkkkkkkkkk…..

  521. Proud Obamacon says:

“soooooooo … it is incredibly low then”

Is it? Similar rate under Obama meant we were in horrible shape. Now it’s “great”. yall make up your minds .. The spin is dizzying!

  522. lisab says:

They’ll sure as hell notice the huge increase in their retirement funds.

  523. Proud Obamacon says:

“although it is true the welfare crowd are not getting much of a tax cut …”

Majority of welfare recipients are in red states. They’ve been told theire getting major relief. I wonder how they will feel one year from now when they get .. nothing.

  524. Tgca says:

Let me tell you how the tax cut helps, if only temporarily, as no economy remains on a upward projectile indefinitely. My company did a number of layoffs in certain departments the last 2 years, and was looking at inevitably cutting some workers but now that is being tabled, as is the case with many companies I suspect, as companies evaluate expected tax savings. Companies generally look for ways to reduce costs. Reduced Taxes = Reduced Costs.

As for Walmart. retail is a low margin business and stores always consolidate and cut less profitable areas and consider growth opportunities elsewhere. I assure you Walmart is looking to grow and not reduce its business but is competing with a changed economy. It’s the reason Starbucks opens stores in places like a Manhattan but not Newark, just a few miles away. Hurts workers in Newark but helps workers in NYC.

  525. lisab says:

Is it? Similar rate under Obama meant we were in horrible shape
    ——————————–

well the dems always said it was great!

sooooooooo … it appears you have been hoisted by your own petard!

  526. Proud Obamacon says:

““Diversify internationally”? You think the rest of the world is a safer bet, and a surer bet”

Yes, US has had a huge run up and is due for a recession. International markets still have room to grow.

  527. Proud Obamacon says:

“well the dems always said it was great!”

And it’s still great. Repugs on the other hand lied. Big surprise there.

There’s nowhere to go but down. It will probably be Obama’s fault and Obama’s economy when the downturn comes. Go Repugs!

  528. lisab says:

    ““Diversify internationally”?
    ————————————

actually it is generally a good idea to keep 10% to 20% invested internationally

but only in a very broad based fund

  529. lisab says:

“well the dems always said it was great!”

    And it’s still great.
    ——————————

well great! then any small percentage of employees who get laid off now will have lots of options!

  530. Proud Obamacon says:

TGCA, yes all makes sense. Again, I have no issue with corporations doing what’s in their best interest.

I have major issue with the GOP lying about the tax scam bill.

It’s meant to line the pockets of their donors and supporters, while tossing a few peanuts to the average worker hoping they are happy because they got something as opposed to nothing.

  531. lisab says:

i am VERY HAPPY with the tax cut

I hope some of these folks endure the same experience sometime in their life.

Yes, this is a must. Strong stomach needed to individual countries.

Ok PO. If you keep flattering me, you’re gonna have to take me on a date then and buy me dinner. We can talk about the rest offline.

Now, back to the tax bill. Of course some folks are going to exaggerate points on the bill just like the gross exaggerations of benefits about the Obamacare bill. Some will do better with taxes while others do not see as much of a direct benefit, but generally, tax reductions are good for economic growth and helps the economy as a whole, including those who may not directly benefit. Yet remember, this bill is largely intended to help directly the middle class with more take home pay after taxes. Poor folks already benefit from not paying taxes but indirectly may benefit from an overall better economy.

So where you taking me to dinner? Remember, I’m a vegetarian now.

I cannot fit into a large waist size without drooping draws. 30 to 32 is my range max. 38 to 40+ is NOT!!!! …and since they cost like $50, it’s worth returning or else that’s less money I can put in my 401K this year.

    As Tina would say: BOOM!

As reported by Newsmax, Senator Cotton now disputes Durbin and also suggests he’s known for lying about similar past meetings. He specifically states Trump did not malign where they were from. See partial extract below.

However, Cotton did say that the reports “misrepresented” Trump’s content and tone, and accused Durbin of having a pattern of misrepresenting what happens in White House meetings” and said people “shouldn’t be surprised” by what he’d said.

Cotton did admit that the meeting got heated when Durbin and Graham proposed their plan on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program and immigration.

“When Sen. Durbin, Senator Graham came to the Oval Office and proposed not to fix that system but to expand it, to create more quotas, more set-asides for other countries…the president reacted with pretty tough language, as he said, because we want to move to a system that treats people for who they are. Not where they’re from,” Cotton said.

  549. SanDiegoCitizen says:

1 in 3 of the nation’s welfare recipients live in California.

“It’s not as though California policymakers have neglected to wage war on poverty. Sacramento and local governments have spent massive amounts in the cause. Several state and municipal benefit programs overlap with one another; in some cases, individuals with incomes 200% above the poverty line receive benefits. California state and local governments spent nearly $958 billion from 1992 through 2015 on public welfare programs, including cash-assistance payments, vendor payments and “other public welfare,” according to the Census Bureau. California, with 12% of the American population, is home today to about one in three of the nation’s welfare recipients.

California Democrats have long been free to indulge blue-state ideology while paying little or no political price.
The generous spending, then, has not only failed to decrease poverty; it actually seems to have made it worse.”

Hey Obamacon – How come when I go to Utah, a stingy conservative, heavily Republican state, I see a lot less poverty than in California?

“Utah has one of the nation’s lowest poverty rates: 10.2 percent, seventh lowest among the states. That is down from 11.3 percent a year earlier. The national average is 14 percent. (The 2017 federal poverty level is $12,060 for a single individual; $16,240 for a two-person household; and $20,420 for three.)

Utah ranked even a bit better for the number of children who lived in poverty within the past year: 11.1 percent, tied for third lowest nationally. The national average was 19.5 percent.

The Beehive State also tied for third lowest among the states for the percent of households that receive food stamps: 7.2 percent, compared to a national average of 12.4 percent”

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) cautioned its members and all psychiatrists against using “armchair psychiatry” as a “political tool” when it came to the mental fitness of President Donald Trump, the Washington Free Beacon reported Friday.

“We at the APA call for an end to psychiatrists providing professional opinions in the media about public figures whom they have not examined, whether it be on cable news appearances, books, or in social media,” the organization said in a statement issued this week.“

Armchair psychiatry or the use of psychiatry as a political tool is the misuse of psychiatry and is unacceptable and unethical,” the statement read. “Using psychiatry for political or self-aggrandizing purposes is stigmatizing for our patients and negatively impacts our profession.”

As the largest psychiatric organization in the world, the APA cautioned members not to violate the “Goldwater Rule,” which harkens back to the early 60s when psychiatric professionals were urged against commenting on the mental state of public figures from afar.

The organization said it was impossible to diagnose the mental state of a person from their tweets and to do so “undermines the credibility and integrity of the profession.”

“A proper psychiatric evaluation requires more than a review of television appearances, tweets, and public comments,” the APA said. “Psychiatrists are medical doctors; evaluating mental illness is no less thorough than diagnosing diabetes or heart disease.”

The Drats can say they have all the energy and momentum, but they still have to have votes in districts where they don’t have as many voters. They can double their excitement in inner city districts they already hold and will win 90/10, but those voters don’t get them other districts.

  561. Big Joe says:

And through it all, the economy survives and thrives. I don’t know who’s good , who’s bad , but as long as I can continue seeing double digit growth in my investments, that will make me happy.

A strong two party system is apparently good for the markets over the long term.

  562. Tgca says:

Ouch! APA ridicules and puts TV pundits in their place. They are blunt that it is both unethical and impossible to diagnose from snippets in the news. They compare this to diagnosing other medical ailments without an evaluation. This goes to the credibility of those making these statements and I wonder if it could lead to censure of them by licensing boards. It’s one thing to point out some behaviors to similarities of evaluated diagnoses but to call for removal of POTUS from offoce or forced evaluations does seem to go to their not practicing to standards.

Was Bill Clinton a sex addict that should have been removed from office?

Two senators dispute the “S-hole” wording Durbin attributed to Trump and said it never happened even though there was blunt and difficult conversation, and both reminded how Durbin previously lied about WH conversations where Obama’s press secretary denied what Durbin said occurred in the past so he has no credibility this time. …and to add to it, they challenged MSM multiple sources claim when only 6 attended the meeting and 4 GOP folks clearly were not the MSM source. So the max sources in the meeting could only be 2 Dems, and it was likely own one.

    2. WH released tape clearly showing saying i”I’d have” vs “I have” a good relationship with Kim so it is clear he is talking hypothetical as opposed to actual relationship as the WSJ tried to imply. False MSM story again.

    3. APA ridicules so called expert psychiatrists advising Congress and the APA is reminding them in very strong language that you can’t draw conclusions about mental disorders from afar without personally evaluating persons, and that it is unethical and misleading to suggest you can and one should stop trying to do so for political gain. I hope there is a young conservative in Utah that doesn’t think Mitt Romney walks i=on water like the Jebots do.

He is a good man, but I am sure there are plenty of other people in Utah who can do just as good a job of being Senator as Mitt can.

  664. mnw says:

I am less interested in what Romney may do, & much more interested in contributing to the extinction of the Spotted Owls: McCaskill; Donnelly; Heitkamp; Tester & perhaps Nelson & Baldwin.

I’d love to see the Spotted Owls forced to discuss amnesty & impeachment for the next 10 months.

  665. mnw says:

I’ve never liked McSally, but I concede her announcement of candidacy was original & fresh: flying around the state in a fighter jet which she is piloting herself; wearing a flight suit, etc.

  666. NYCmike says:

    mnw,

You are correct. Romney and McSally will be fine.

Let’s take out “the Spotted Owls”.

  667. mnw says:

I’m trying to concentrate my donations this year on Hawley, to take it Sky Queen. That witch has been “my” senator for too damn long.

  670. biomom says:

Good interview with him in a Nola.com article.

  671. NYCmike says:

The safety easily had a brain freeze. Tough spot and time for that to happen.

He’ll probably be an all-star every year after this.

  672. mnw says:

The thing that’s always true about a Bill Buckner-type error is, there are always 5-6 OTHER mistakes that contributed just as much to the final loss. In Buckner’s case, his team could have just gone out & won the next game, but they didn’t.

Tony LaRussa discusses this “goat of the game” thing in his book “One Last Strike.”

  673. Bitterlaw says:

Mistakes can define a player forever. Does anybody ever talk about the field goals that Scott Norwood made?

  674. DW says:

690 – agree on Buckner. He is the biggest false-goat ever.

    1) He was only on the field because of a stupid mistake his manager made, who normally subbed out the big-hitting, wobbly fielding Buckner in late inning save situations.

    2) The tying run had ALREADY scored on a wild pitch by Bob Stanley…the catcher Gedman made only a half-hearted effort to catch the pitch. But Stanley should be bigger goat than Buckner. Even if Buckner gets Mookie Wilson out, the Red Sox would have had to score again to win.

    3) Even if Buckner fielded the ball, there was no guarantee he gets to the bag before the speedy Wilson.

Compared to the Saints player yesterday its not even close. There were lots of ways for New Orleans not to lose, but that defender all by himself managed to find the one way to lose the game.

  675. mnw says:

    DW

Buckner had been sick too, I believe. Another reason to keep him off the field that day.

While it is true that one major mistake can define a player forever in the fans’ memory, the pros know better.

TLR describes an incident in 2011 where Furcal made an error which Furcal thought cost the Cards a critical game, altho TLR did not see it that way. Furcal announced that he was quitting the team & flying home. La Russ’s said, “Don’t you think you owe me one short meeting first? That’s all I’m asking of you.”

Cards won series. Furcal more than redeemed himself.

  676. Big Joe says:

Agreed DW. There were 2 outs and no baserunners and the Red Sox had a 2 run lead. The BOS pitchers proceed to give up 3 consecutive singles and throw a wild pitch to allow the Mets to tie it up.

I doubt Mookie is out on that play. He was hustling hard and it was a slow grounder quite a ways behind the bag.

But … the result of the play was one of the greatest baseball moments in history and Buckner becomes the goat due to that one play. Ball gets through Buckner and as Bob Murphy called it “Mets Win! Mets Win!”

Also lost in the details is the Mets rally in the bottom of the 8th when they were down 3-2 and tied it up.

    Big Joe

  677. DW says:

694 – the sounds of Bob Murphy’s call is forever etched into my memory..

“..and a ground ball trickling…it is a fair BALL GETS BY BUCKNER!! ROUNDING THIRD KNIGHT!! THE METS WILL WIN THE BALL GAME!! THE METS WIN! THEY WIN!!!”

  678. Big Joe says:

1996 World Series game 4. Braves up 2 games to 1 on the Yankees and leading 6-3 going into the top of the 8th.

Bobby Cox brings in his closer, Mark Wohlers, and defensive specialist, Rafael Belliard, at SS. The Braves are the heavy favorites and are poised to go up 3 games to 1.

Yankees get the first two men on base. Then Mariano Duncan hits a routine double play ball to Belliard. Belliard boots it and can only get the out at 2nd. It is not an error, since he did get the force at 2nd. Next batter is Jim Leyritz and we know what happens next.

Yankees go on to win the game. They win games 5 and 6 and the dynasty of the 90s is born.

The Belliard blunder was many times worse than Bucker’s. But that one play is not a highlight. It goes down as a fielder’s choice. So no one remembers it.

Timing is everything and Buckner’s timing was well as bad as it could be.

    Big Joe

  679. DW says:

And I agree that Mookie beats it out. Not only was Buckner well behind the bag, Stanley was not anywhere near covering, and so it was up to Buckner. His momentum was carrying him into foul territory where he would have to stop that momentum, then start moving perpendicular toward first base with enough acceleration to beat Mookie. It would have been a bang-bang play, but Mookie gets there first.

The other weird part of it was Ray Knight. He was sort of jogging to third and only started to run when the ball got through. But had Buckner fielded the ball but Mookie beat it out, Knight would have been standing on third base like a doofus when in fact he could have scored easily had he hustled from the crack of the bat.

My guess is that Knight thought it was going to roll foul or be an easy out.

  680. mnw says:

    “Mets win!”

So what? Win the NEXT game, Sox.

  681. NYCmike says:

    Yoooooooo

  682. NYCmike says:

    DCC

  683. Chicon says:

690 – mnw, totally agree. Good example is the famous “Bartman” play for the Cubs in 2003. That poor guy’s been in hiding as the goat costing the team a WS appearance. Everyone forgets the easy DP grounder the SS booted just after that, which would have ended the inning.

  684. Big Joe says:

DW, you think Knight should have tried to score if Buckner fielded the ball but was unable to get Mookie out? I don’t know, he would be rounding 3rd just as Buckner was touching 1st. And with Buckner’s momentum going towards home, Knight would have had to hold.

It would have been 1st and 3rd, 2 outs, with Howard Johnson due to hit. Johnson was an excellent hitter. Advantage Mets. but if Johnson can’t get the winning run home, then I say advantage Red Sox. Mets had already used Orosco and McDowell, their two best relievers. Probably would need to turn to a starter like Sid Fernandez.

    Big Joe

  685. DW says:

701 – and there was no guarantee Alou catches the ball had Bartman got out of the way.

  686. DW says:

702 – don’t forget that Knight was almost picked off second. He was taking huge leads and trying to rattle Stanley. Had he ran hard from the moment Mookie made contact, he would have already rounded third about the time Buckner fielded the ball and been halfway home by the time Buckner failed to get to the bag. But if you watch the replay, you can see Knight was slowly approaching third and then suddenly accelerated when the ball went through Buckner’s legs.

  687. Chicon says:

    http://www.redstate.com/brandon_morse/2018/01/15/rand-paul-provides-proof-demolishes-trump-racist-narrative/

Can a guy who often acts like an arse, also act like a good guy? We know Robbie’s thoughts….

  688. Big Joe says:

I think he was definitely going to grab 3rd on any ball in the dirt. But to round 3rd and head home if Buckner fields the ball? Wow that would have set up an incredible play to potentially win the game.

And if he’s thrown out? And the Red Sox win in the 12th inning or later? Then Ray Knight goes down as the Goat. Amazing! 😀

Somewhere Bill Buckner is dreaming about this alternate history and smiling.

    Big Joe

  689. mnw says:

    Chicon

    RE: Bartman

Absolutely! Did Bartman cause the Cubs to give up 8 more runs? Did Bartman cause the Cubs to lose the next game also?

La Russa drives home the point that real pros get over tough losses fast. Get ‘em tomorrow.

    DW

I really like Matt Rosendale in the MT Senate race. Tester has voted like a typical liberal DEM forever. Tester is now proclaiming himself “a good ally of President Trump.”

  690. Chicon says:

703 – agree, DW. As mnw pointed out, there’s plenty of participants that could have made that play irrelevant. Same deal goes with bad ump/ref calls.

  691. Big Joe says:

Cubs were fighting the curse of the goat.

Bartman awoke the goat. Up until that point, the Cub had done well to try to lift the curse. It all came crashing down when Bartman did his thing.

The goat awoke, caused the SS to boot the next ground ball, gave Josh Becket super powers in game 7, and lived to curse Cub fans for another 12 years.

    Big Joe

  692. Chicon says:

That MN poll was certainly interesting. Trump made inroads in the Rust Belt and Upper Midwest that not everyone (including me) saw coming. And this poll suggests he may not have given back those gains.

  693. Chicon says:

709 – hello Big Joe. I’m quite pleased to not have to hear any more about that stupid goat and the curse.

  694. Big Joe says:

Congrats on the 2016 World Series title, Chicon. I was rooting for the Cubs (Yankee fan here). You guys almost gave that one away too – but glad you were able to pull it out in the end.

    Big Joe

  695. Chicon says:

Big Joe, 108 years losing streaks don’t end easily, for sure. It was fun – I’m glad the fans even older than me got the chance to see one. Also nice to have a professionally run team – that’s the thing we’re most unused to.

I found myself enjoying the Yanks run last year; seems there’s a bunch of good guys on the team. Gleybar Torres should be the goods when he arrives.

  696. Big Joe says:

I think MN is a real blue-to-red possibility in 2020. I really want to see who the GOP nominates for Franken’s old seat too.

Franken’s resignation caused the MN LG to flip from blue to red, btw. You never know. The big gopher in the sky may call Dayton home.

    – Trump kicked off his campaign saying Mexicans are rapists
    – Trump said Judge Curiel (from Indiana) couldn’t be impartial because he was a Mexican
    – Trump said there were many fine people among the white supremacists who marched in Charlottesville and chanted “Jews will not replace us”, they also killed a woman

Sorry Obamacon, but your totally wrong. Here is a quote from the liberal Atlantic magazine:

“So when white pundits cast the elevation of Trump as the handiwork of an inscrutable white working class, they are being too modest, declining to claim credit for their own economic class. Trump’s dominance among whites across class lines is of a piece with his larger dominance across nearly every white demographic. Trump won white women (+9) and white men (+31). He won white people with college degrees (+3) and white people without them (+37). He won whites ages 18–29 (+4), 30–44 (+17), 45–64 (+28), and 65 and older (+19). Trump won whites in midwestern Illinois (+11), whites in mid-Atlantic New Jersey (+12), and whites in the Sun Belt’s New Mexico (+5). In no state that Edison polled did Trump’s white support dip below 40 percent. Hillary Clinton’s did, in states as disparate as Florida, Utah, Indiana, and Kentucky. From the beer track to the wine track, from soccer moms to nascar dads, Trump’s performance among whites was dominant. According to Mother Jones, based on preelection polling data, if you tallied the popular vote of only white America to derive 2016 electoral votes, Trump would have defeated Clinton 389 to 81, with the remaining 68 votes either a toss-up or unknown.”

Trump also did better than Romney among Latinos, carrying the Cuban vote in Florida — which helped him carry the state.

  764. SanDiegoCitizen says:

Parents arrested after children found shackled and malnourished in California home

The 911 call came in at 6 a.m. Sunday. A teenage girl was on the line with an unsettling tale.
She had managed to escape from her family’s home in Perris, where her parents had been holding her captive. Her brothers and sisters were still locked inside — 12 of them. Some were chained to their beds, she said.
Riverside County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to find the 17-year-old girl. When they saw her, they were struck by her small size and emaciated appearance. She looked to be only 10, according to the sheriff’s account released Monday.
The nightmarish scene deputies discovered when they entered the house on Muir Woods Road was as bad as the girl had described. They found “several children shackled to their beds with chains and padlocks in dark and foul-smelling surroundings,” the statement said.

The parents, David Allen Turpin, 57, and Louise Anna Turpin, 49, “were unable to immediately provide a logical reason why their children were restrained in that manner,” deputies wrote. The couple were arrested on suspicion of torture and child endangerment and each was being held Monday night in lieu of $9-million bail.
The youngest child was 2. At first deputies assumed from their frail and malnourished appearance that all in the group were minors, but they later determined that seven of them were adults ages 18 to 29, the sheriff’s statement said.

    yes (50%)
    Hillary 52% Trump 42% Other 6%
    no (50%)
    Clinton 44% Trump 51% Other 5%

Some quick middle school math shows that overall (all voters), the tally is
    Clinton 48%
    Trump 46.5%
    Other 5.5%

Hardly a landslide, and in fact the error is towards the Groper. Actual overall was Clinton 48.2% and Groper 46.1%

    Again, facts.. strange things.

  784. Mr.Vito says:

The 2016 exit poll shows Trump won white college educated voters (48-45).

Trump won voters who had some college education, but not a degree. (51-43)

It also shows that college educated non-whites voted MORE for Trump (22%) than those who were not (20%).

Hillary carried the college educated vote (52-42) due to the racial gap.

In regard to swing states, Trump won college educated voters outright in Arizona, Florida, Iowa, and Ohio.

And nearly so in Georgia and North Carolina despite heavy non-white population.

He additionally won white college educated voters in Michigan, Nevada, and Pennsylvania.

  785. Mr.Vito says:

All of which is why Hillary lost of course… she did not perform as well as she expected with these groups after the gambit of tossing out the working class.

Simone Biles, the golden girl of the 2016 Olympics, added her name Monday to the list of gymnasts who say they were molested by team doctor Larry Nassar.
The revelation came in a long statement on her social media accounts — one day before a weeklong sentencing hearing at which Nassar will hear from nearly 100 victims.
“Most of you know me as a happy, giggly and energetic girl. But lately … I’ve felt a bit broken and the more I try to shut off the voice in my head the louder it screams,” Biles wrote in a #metoo post.

Simone Biles says she was molested by Larry Nassar.
“I am not afraid to tell my story anymore. I too am one of the many survivors that was sexually abused by Larry Nassar,” she continued.
“For too long I have asked myself, ‘Was I too naive? Was it my fault?’ I now know the answers to those questions. No. No, it was not my fault. No, I will not and should not carry the guilt that belongs to Larry Nassar, USAG [USA Gymnastics], and others.”
Biles’ statement follows similar disclosures from three members of the 2012 “Fierce Five” team — McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas. They are not expected to be at Nassar’s sentencing, but 2000 Olympian Jamie Dantzscher will testify at the marathon hearing.

  790. Mr.Vito says:

Not exactly… she did better than Obama with them, but not by an amount that would offset her huge losses with the working class.

Basically, Trump got the same percent of men as Romney. But 4% more went third party.

Hillary got slightly fewer women AND Trump lost less in 3rd party defectors. More suburban Republican women “came home” to the ticket than expected.

  793. Mr.Vito says:

    Well, actually…

The party ID in the Governor’s Races were D+11 and D+14 in Virginia and NJ respectively. However, in the 2016 elections, it was D+7 and D+16. So, that is a mixed bag for Democrats, but a tick up, I would say.

Meanwhile, independents were not any more inclined to support the Democrat:

    Clinton +2 NJ
    Murphy +4 NJ

    Trump +5 VA
    Gillespie +3 VA

Basically, in VA, a share of republicans stayed home… the democrat share of the electorate stayed basically the same (40-41%).

  794. Mr.Vito says:

All of this matches what I have noted with the gallup party ID numbers, BTW.

If Republicans give their people a reason to get out and vote for them in 2018, it will not be a wave. The Deomocrat numbers have been stagnant, and it is the republican number that is fluctuating, as usual.

  826. SanDiegoCitizen says:

Just when the American people get a tax break, a parasite emerges to raise taxes so the government can get the money back.

The Chamber of Commerce, once of the biggest defenders of outsourcing jobs to foreign countries, wants a major gas tax increase:

“The U.S. Chamber of Commerce will advocate for
a hike to the gas tax to fund plans for a massive infrastructure package, the organization’s president said in a recently published interview.

“I’ve been pushing this for a long, long time, but now gangs of people are pushing it,” Tom Donohue told The Washington Post.

The Chamber, which has for years backed an increase to the federal gas tax, will reportedly press for a 25-cent-per-gallon hike, an effort that comes ahead of the Trump administration’s long-awaited infrastructure plan. The business group will unveil its strategy for the effort this week, the Post said.

“We just got a new tax bill for the first time in 31 years,” Donohue told the newspaper.

“We’re making some significant changes in regulatory reform. We’ve got a president — everybody’s got all their own views about him and what he stands for and all that — but the guy’s getting stuff done … and he’s a builder. I think we can get some help here.”

The Chamber previously campaigned for an increase to the gas tax to fund projects aimed at rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure, even partnering with the AFL-CIO in 2011 to press Congress on the subject. In 2015, the Chamber, along with the American Trucking Association and AAA auto club, pushed Congress to up the gas tax in order to finance the Highway Trust Fund.

  827. SanDiegoCitizen says:

Have to agree with what was stated in the liberal journal “Think Progress” in 2010 about the U.S. Chamber of Commerce:

“One of the main organizations promoting outsourcing has been the US Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber has been taking money from foreign corporations and holding clinics on how to outsource American jobs, such as one sponsored by billionaire Sheldon Adelson “inviting local businesses in Florida to come to Jacksonville and learn about outsourcing from Chinese government officials like Li Haiyan, the Counselor for Economic Affairs for the People’s Republic of China, U.S. Chamber lobbyist Joseph Fawkner, and BChinaB.”

Last week, The Wonk Room sat down with United Steel Workers International President Leo Gerard and three members of the USW labor union. Among the topics we discussed were the Chamber’s practice of encouraging outsourcing. Gerard called these actions a “disgrace,” adding that “it’s no longer U.S. Chamber of Commerce. It’s the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce or the Chinese Chamber of Commerce”:”

  828. SanDiegoCitizen says:

Of course the U.S. Chamber of Commerce was more supportive of Hillary Clinton than Trump.

The Justice Department asked the Supreme Court Tuesday to overturn this month’s stunning ruling by a lower court that found the Obama-era DACA deportation amnesty legal — yet also ruled the Trump administration’s effort to phase out the program was illegal.

The Supreme Court will once again need to verbally rebuke a 9th Circuit judge. One would think that the 9th Circuit judges would get tired of embarrassing themselves, but then again, it is almost impossible to embarrass a liberal about anything.

I don’t see huge swings. I see a completely different electorate. The one WI seat the DEMs picked up had about 20000 or so voters total, for a special election for an open state senate seat. The GOP held the other three.

I think that comparing the 2016 presidential election partisan split with the partisan split in these tiny standalone special election is apples to oranges.

In March, there will be a federal election for an open House seat in PA-18 (I think). Let’s see what sort of seismic shift that election shows.
