I have no problem with Trump meeting with the Taliban at all. No
That is because I doubt Trump would make a bad deal for the US, just like I doubt he would make a bad deal with North Korea. Trump likes to negotiate from a position of strength, whether he has actually holds the best cards or not.

    – This is so laughable. It reads like something from a Janine Pirro monologed.

Pretty soon, Jason fraud is going to be talking about how strong virile Trump is.

So now we have dispelled the BS that I am silent and embarrassed about negotiations with the Taliban.

    – No one thought that for a minute, Jason fraud. We all know you’re in the tank for Trump as long as it’s not tariffs.

Was there a meeting at Camp David?
    Must have missed it.

    – This may be my favorite defense of Trump. He’s a hero for cancelling a meeting with a group of murderous thugs he set up. Why did he set it up in the first place? Was he unaware the Taliban was a group of murderous thugs who helped UBL carry out the 9/11 attacks?

That said, I’m not the least bit surprised this forum is excusing, defending, and even supporting Trump’s plan to meet with a group of murderous thugs days before 9/11. The Trump era has made clear that many of those who grunted about conservative values and conservative principles during the Obama years were really just a bunch of people who were anti Democrats using those issues as a convenient way to attack Obama.

I wonder how many times Amoral Scumbag has said this in the last 3 years.
    Hope springs eternal.

    – You bet. I hope Trump collapses in the polling very soon so the party will realize they need to nominate someone else rather than the dementia addled idiot you have decided is the great hero of our times, except on tariffs of course.

Sadly, the pro-Trump mouth breather like you are never going to abandon dear Donnie so he won’t collapse in the polling and we’ll be stuck with him in 2020.

Trump’s trade war has killed 300,000 jobs, says Moody’s Analytics.

  13. Wes says:

    Thanks, Phil.

I’m glad Trump is taking this race seriously. A loss here would lead to tremendous negative publicity that would dog the President through next year. We already have enough of that, thank you.

    – The only real success of the Trump era is he’s convinced his supporters that any bad news is just fake news. So no matter how low Trump polls, his supporters will say it’s fake. Trump could fall to 29% in the polling averages and his supporters, assisted by FoxNews and Rush, would shrug their shoulders and grunt MAGA.

I thought the wipeout Republicans suffered in 2018 might be a crack in the ice on this, but it seems to have only hardened their belief that bad news is fake news. So when Trump likely loses next year, it will A) come as a shock to his supporters and B) they will conclude that the vote totals were rigged because illegals voted.

    – Right now, it’s not a contest between Trump and a Democrat. It’s still a contest between Trump and another Republican because not one primary vote has been cast.

  31. jason says:

I doubt Trump is at 22% among blacks.

That being said I think he will do better than the 8% he got in 2016, unless Biden is the Dem nominee.

  33. Hugh says:

    19. Wipeout? A sitting president’ party loses the house and gains in the senate. Not great but not unusual. I was disappointed, but a wipeout? Hardly. An unpopular rep governor from swing state Florida beats a long term incumbent senator. Hmmm

  34. Phil says:

Come on, Robbie, just enjoy the Republican descent into the abyss. It’s happening with or without Trump and I have no doubt that suits you just fine.

You are going to be partying with your leftist allies for the next generation regardless of Trump or who ever the hell Republicans choose as candidates. Open borders, single payer healthcare, strangling regulation of business, sky high taxes on the middle class, big government telling you what to drive and what to eat, eventual gun confiscation (this one will take a little longer), elimination of the electoral college, the senate filibuster or anything else that would get in the way of Democratic Party power, reparations, mandated leftist curriculum in the schools – Pretty much California on a national scale.

    Party on.

  35. Tina says:

18 would be a number that is reasonable.
    It is trending up.

That is why the jebots went for the muh racist, after porn lawyah, and the muh Russian hoax/senile Mulehead hearing bombed.

  36. Wes says:

Hugh, Republicans lost more seats in a first midterm than in any other one since 1930.

They gained seats in the Senate—not an unalloyed success consisting as it did of losses in AZ and NV along with the gains—ONLY because they were at 8 seats in the Class One seats. That’s 24% of the seats up. They netted up 2 to a total of 10 (32%). This is after losing 4 seats (2000), 6 seats (2006), and 2 seats (2012) during the three previous times these seats were up.

What the GOP did in the Senate last year was pure inertia brought on by being down to 8 seats out of 33. It’s better than the alternative but not impressive when viewed in context. That same dynamic won’t be in place to save the Senate GOP in 2022 if Trump beats the odds next year.

  37. SanDiegoCitizen says:

Haven’t several states already declared Trump to be the recipient of their delegates, Robbie?

    – I know four states cancelled their primaries, but Iowa and New Hampshire haven’t. Nor have 44 other states as of yet.

I recognize no one of substance is going to challenge Trump, but imagine this scenario. Someone does and gets north of 40% in NH. That would instantly make the race against Trump competitive and cancelling SC and NV, two of Trump’s best states might well cost him. And if Trump is getting creamed in H2H matchups with democrats, it could turbocharge a strong NH showing for someone like Romney.

Is it going to happen? Nope. But what I laid out is the way a challenge could gain traction with the primary voters.

  39. jason says:

They did not vote or voted for that independent whose name I have forgotten. They’re principled republicans though they just threw their votes away. Robbie is a troll unlike big joe. And he posts the same stuff over and over and over ugh

  50. Phil says:

  51. jason says:

Bitter said it best, Amoral Scumbag pretends he wants a R to win, as long as it is not the nominee.

He would be here accusing Pence of being a Jesus freak and Haley of being a whore in a nanosecond after they were nominated. No left wing talking point would be too low for him.

It is not about Trump, Never was.

  52. SanDiegoCitizen says:

“Top officials representing the White House and the Department of Housing and Urban Development arrived in California this week for a round of meetings. A particular focus has been the “Skid Row” section of Los Angeles, officials said. The president is directly involved with the initiative, officials said, and has asked for updates.

Officials representing the Justice Department were also part of the tour, according to two government officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to share details they were not authorized to discuss.

Among the ideas under consideration are razing existing tent camps for the homeless, creating new temporary facilities and refurbishing existing government facilities, two officials said. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because the planning hasn’t been publicly revealed. The changes would attempt to give the federal government a larger role in supervising housing and health care for residents.”

If Trump were able to make this happen, it might result in Republicans becoming competitive again in California.

  53. jason says:

McCready is at 60% on Predictit, Bishop at 45% (separate markets).

    But nobody knows anything.

  54. Hugh says:

I don’t think anything will make republicans competitive in CA. Even if they could be they would lose due to fraud and there is no one who would stop it in CA. CA is a lost cause. I just wish the Californians would stop leaving to avoid the taxes and turning surrounding red states blue as they vote the same when they leave.

  55. jason says:

According to the exit poll, more respondents said they voted to support Trump than voted to oppose him.

  56. jason says:

That made McCready drop at Predicit he is at 54 and Bishop at 48 now.

  57. Wes says:

Here’s a story about exit polling that would be amusing if it weren’t such a facepalm moment, Jason:

In 2010, West Virginians in an exit poll said they were casting their votes to oppose Obama.

They did this by voting for his lapdog, Joe Manchin.

    West Virginians are stupid.

  58. jason says:

  64. Wes says:

  65. jason says:

    Is that good or bad?

  66. Wes says:

Probably good actually. Mecklenburg is the home to Charlotte and tends to be liberal, but Bishop is from there. Because of partisan lean, McCready should carry Mecklenburg, but if his lead isn’t above a 60-39 split there Bishop is in the driver’s seat.

  67. Wes says:

With two precincts in, McCready is up by ~7600 votes.

  68. Wes says:

    Murphy (R) wins NC-3.

  69. GeauxLSU says:

Big swing to the D in that last drop.

  70. Wes says:

Results so far are a mixed bag.

If McCready wins this after losing last year despite the fact that Trump and Pence were both here rallying the troops yesterday I think we can safely say it will be a bellwether like the dual losses of PA-10 and Gerald Ford’s district during the Watergate scandal.

The President was too toxic to survive then. It will be a clear indication Trump has passed his sell-by date.

I don’t want to hear the age-old meme excusing special election results. This was a heavily nationalized election both the President and Vice-President weighed in on. If I get my first bad call in NC and McCready wins, then things look bleak for the Donald next year.

  71. Wes says:

  137. Wes says:

I haven’t seen any numbers on that front, Tina, but given Bishop’s strong showing in Bladen, Cumberland, and Robeson, it’s entirely possible his focus on socially conservative rural black voters helped dent McCready’s margins among blacks to a degree.

Trump’s popularity was basically even here. By going to Cumberland, he got the word out to his rural base. Meanwhile, Pence worked the western half of the district in the suburbs and exurbs. That was a smart decision and deployment of resources.

Bishop gets credit too since he knew what voters to target and what issues to emphasize.

This underscores my expectation that Trump will hang on in NC next year. Dems are increasingly problematic even with the types of candidates they used to win with here. They still have a large base, but only enormous GOP blunders currently help Dems win here.

  142. Wes says:

At best Trump is exaggerating, SDC. Bishop was never down by double digits if at all. I will concede Trump and Pence helped Bishop win by rallying the troops on Election Eve.

  143. dblaikie says:

First of all I want to extend congrats to Wes for his accurate call of NC 9. Great call. Frankly I was impressed by Bishop’s victory. After all McCready has had a constant campaign for over 2 years. And correct me if I am wrong (I live in the South Carolina section of the Charlotte metro area) but folks were telling me that Bishop was behind a few months ago. Quite a come back.

I read with a smile on my face Wes’s apocalyptic post about a McCready win. So I wonder what he thinks about the huge victory in NC 3 for the GOP.

I do have a couple of quick observations about this special election. I read with interest the comment that Trump’s rally may have made a difference. If so, that is powerful news. There are many districts in this country that are Suburban/Rural in demographics. I don’t think many people running in these districts are going to shun the Nominee. Second Bishop victory was far more solid than 2018. Why? I believe the answer is the lunacy of the democratic party! Bishop was able to tie McCready to the radical Democratic base. THIS WAS NOT THE CASE ACROSS THE COUNTRY IN 2018. My friend Wes in his analysis of 2018 talks about how Trump was really on the ballot in those suburban districts. But what happens when you are able put the Democratic agenda squarely on the ballot? And the good news is that the democrats are the ones who are doing just that. I tell you what happens the vote begins to turn.

Finally I do have one bone to pick with Wes. Please stop droning on about how Gallup is “the Gold Standard in Presidential Polls.” That was very true in the past. 15 years ago the one poll I cared about the most was the Gallup tracking poll of likely voters. You see, likely, is the operative word. To their credit because they saw the flaws of trying to get an accurate likely voter screen, the Gallup organization gave them up. Today they only poll adults in the Presidential race. Since only half of adults actually vote, it can never be the “Gold standard.

  150. Wes says:

Thanks, everyone, for the accolades on my prediction. I have to admit a lot of luck goes into getting these things right. Fortunately in my time on here I’ve seen other posters provide resources I could use to give my best guess on the outcomes.

It’s a lot of work, but I consider it a labor of love.

  151. Wes says:

All right. My analysis of the implications of the GOP victories yesterday:

Trump has stopped the hemorrhaging in the suburbs that cost Republicans dearly last year—at least for now.

It doesn’t means he’s reversed the effects, but clearly the suburban trend toward the Dems isn’t expanding. That McCready—the most electable Dem in this area since Mike McIntyre—couldn’t win a district he’d previously nearly picked off suggests the Dems have hit saturation in these districts and won’t be able to expand things further.

It doesn’t mean Trump will regain lost ground but does mean things likely won’t get worse. The way Trump and Pence deployed to aid Bishop was telling:

Trump went to Cumberland County—a military m-based county with a large rural population that would have thus been aware of Trump’s desire to help Bishop win. On the backs of Trump’s base, Bishop did extremely well in the three counties comprising most of the eastern end of the district: Cumberland, Bladen, and Robeson.

Meanwhile, Pence went to the western end of the district where Trump would likely have struggled to persuade a suburban/exurban audience. Pence is inoffensive to these kinds of voters and likely netted Bishop some votes in the area.

Now of course NC-9 didn’t flip even in 2018, so I don’t want to overread the results and say Republicans—Trump in particular—are out of the woods yet. This one data point suggests they’ve managed to keep the Dems from advancing. It doesn’t mean they’re regaining lost ground. It could, but it’s too soon to say that.

The tandem approach Trump and Pence employed—Trump to the suburbs to rally his most loyal supporters; Pence to suburbs and exurbs to woo apostate voters who drifted left because of antipathy toward Trump—was clearly a good one and will likely provide the template for their campaign next year. It certainly worked here, but as I noted, this is a district the GOP held last year anyway. It’s unclear if Trump and Pence can replicate this success in districts such as GA-6 the GOP lost last year. They will have to do it to win.

Ultimately the victory means less than a defeat (which would have been disastrous) would have but has its share of positives. It’s both a morale booster and an indication Dems aren’t gaining ground.

It doesn’t change electoral calculus much if at all but does indicate Dems aren’t gaining. That’s really what Republicans needed most to know right now.

  152. Michael corleone says:

Great analysis Wes. Also all these MSM experts talking about how this represented a dangerous falling off for the GOP since Trump won the district by 12 misses the mark. This election was still a referendum on Trump, and Trump’s brand has clearly rebounded somewhat since 2018.

If we are going to look at the 2016 presidential outcome as our baseline, we have to remember that in that election there was actually a candidate at the top of the ticket for the Ds and the voters were also rendering judgment on that candidate and her policies, not just Trump and his. It wasn’t a referendum on Trump. And since the Democrats are going to be nominate a communist to head their ticket in 2020, I’m increasingly confident that enough suburban voters that actually own things but despise Trump’s behavior will be come back to Trump because the Ds socialist positions will be untenable. Trump will win N.C. 9 by > 10.

  153. mnw says:

I also think it means that Trump successfully tied unpopular DEM positions (sanctuary cities, etc.) to McCready’s tail at that rally. That is a preview of what he’ll do to the DEM nominee in 2020, imo.

    Weird

  157. dblaikie says:

Good analysis Wes, I agree with most of it. However I do think you are missing the effect that is just at its infancy — the huge leftward tilt of the Democratic Party. In 2018 we knew that Democratic base was tilting left. What we didn’t know is that it was going off the deep end.

The upshot is not good news for the dems. Biden in his senile way is racing to get along side AOC. Warren and Sanders are standing as proud socialists. If their agenda and platform is reflective of their positions today, they are in deep trouble. For all of those suburban women who have trouble with Trump 2018 was an easy vote. But in 2020 if that vote against Trump means open borders where illegals get free health care, giving up their health care for a Government run mess, destroying the energy industry and on and on, that vote becomes much more complicated.

I agree with Wes to the extent that Trump is his own worst enemy. Even though he has done many things I like, he still drives me nuts. However with their embrace of Socialism, despite Trumps peccadilloes, they are dooming themselves in 2020.

One more point and I know it is sort of knit-picking. The GOP victory for NC9 in 2018 was just around 1000 votes. Last night it was right at 4000 votes. That is an improvement. It shows that the GOP has not only stopped hemorrhaging, they have started to turn the corner.

  170. jason says:

The Dems probably won at least 10 seats in 2018 by 3 pts or less, but those were “landslides”.

  171. dblaikie says:

Wes I am not ignoring the difference between Harris and Bishop. However McCready had the advantage of a 2 year campaign and being the victim of voter fraud. Because of that Bishop had a hill to climb. There were a few factors that made a 1000 vote advantage turn into a 4000 vote advantage. Bishop was’t Harris, Trump had a rally, and 2020 is getting close. The upshot is I still stand on my point. In NC 9 from its low point in 2018 the tide has started to turn.

In fact, Wes, this for me reveals the flaw in your argument concerning 2020: you seem convinced that nothing is going to change from the night after the election 2018. Of course last night it was the tide of McCready votes that were going to come in from Mecklenburg.

It shows that the GOP has not only stopped hemorrhaging, they have started to turn the corner.

    – Turned the corner? Seriously? Republicans spent more than $10 million to win a House seat by 2 points that Trump carried by 12 points in 2016.

What last night showed is Republicans are basically in the same place they were on election day 2018. You remember what happened then, right? Republicans lost about 40 House seats.

Last night was very reminiscent of the 2017 special elections like GA6 where the party had won by 20 six months before, but had to spend hand over fist just to barely beat a worthless candidate like Ossoff.

    – Wrong, Boomer Phil. I was responding to your posts about me last night when I wasn’t around to respond.

I get it. You’re cranky about Trump’s standing. As much as you’ve bought into Don the conman, there’s still a part of you that knows he’s an electoral disaster and you’re getting more and more frustrated by the polls showing him getting crushed.

First he comes up with the fantasy that Mitt Romney could still be nominated by GOP voters in 2020, which is about as likely as AOC becoming a Republican.
Then he admits it will never happen.

    – I know this is hard for mouth breathing Trump fraud like you, but I was presenting a hypothetical as to how someone like Romney could defeat Trump. I know, as a Trumper, you’re only capable of very simplistic thoughts so I’ll keep that in mind in the future.

Your boys at Rasmussen had their final generic ballot poll at Republicans +1 last November. How’d that work out?

As I wrote yesterday, it’s clear a lot you spouted conservative policy talking points during the Obama years, not because you believed in them, but because they allowed you to sound like a principled voter when, in fact, you were just anti-Democrat. 216. jason says:

Hilarious, the “conservative” here who wants a socialist to win in 2020 is talking about “conservative policy”. Puhhhhleeesse….

    – Conservative judicial picks
    – Lower taxes for corporations and individuals
    – Deregulation and other pro-business measures
    – Energy independence
    – Rebuilding the military
    – Not pouring trillions into the climate change rathole
    – War against the corrupt, biased, partisan MSM
    – Peace initiatives with North Korea and Taliban
    – Border security (not wall)

Here is where I don’t agree with Trump:

    – gratuitous attacks on fellow Republicans he needs support from to advance his agenda
    – attacks on NATO and existing alliances which have kept the world safer and stable for decades despite the costs
    – Insistence on a physical border wall which will never happen when the emphasis should be border security (majority approval) vs. physical wall (unpopular)
    – Disastrous, short sighted, detrimental, naive, self defeating trade policy based on tariffs, aka, tax hikes on American consumers. Stupid trade wars nobody will ever win.

    So my principles haven’t changed.

But in fairness yours haven’t either. You celebrated Obama’s win, if a socialist wins in 2020 you will celebrate it too.
