Edwards Falls Short of 50% in Three Polls in LA

We are only 4 days from the Gubernatiorial primary in Louisiana and in the past few days, there has been three separate polls showing Democratic incumbent John Bel Edwards well ahead of the main two Republicans, but still short of the 50% level he needs to avoid a runoff. The polls come from Emerson College, JMC Analytics, and Mason-Dixon.

GOVERNOR – LOUISIANA (Emerson)
John Bel Edwards (D-inc) 48%
Eddie Rispone (R) 25%
Ralph Abraham (R) 19%
Gary Landrieu (I) 4%
Patrick Landry (R) 3%
Oscar Dantzler (D) 1%

GOVERNOR – LOUISIANA (JMC)
John Bel Edwards (D-inc) 45%
Eddie Rispone (R) 20%
Ralph Abraham (R) 19%
Oscar Dantzler (D) 2%
Gary Landrieu (I) 1%
Patrick Landry (R) <1%

GOVERNOR – LOUISIANA (Mason-Dixon)
John Bel Edwards (D-inc) 45%
Eddie Rispone (R) 22%
Ralph Abraham (R) 17%
Gary Landrieu (I) 4%
Patrick Landry (R) 2%

Mason-Dixon did provide some runoff polls as well and it shows Edwards would beat either Rispone or Abraham, although Rispone currently gives Republicans a better chance.

GOVERNOR – LOUISIANA (Mason-Dixon)
John Bel Edwards (D-inc) 53%
Ralph Abraham (R) 38%

John Bel Edwards (D-inc) 51%
Eddie Rispone (R) 42%

The Emerson poll was done October 4-7 among 467 likely voters. The JMC poll was done October 3-5 among 600 likely voters. The Mason-Dixon poll was done October 1-4 among 625 likely voters.

Republicans are likely to get a shot at ousting Edwards in a runoff.

Intriguingly of the three governorships up this year—LA, MS, and KY—KY has proved a bellwether for the following year’s presidential election every time since 1991 except 1999.

That’s an interesting factoid for those trying to read the leaves of the 2019 elections.

Well Golly. Granite is finally doing an investigation of something.

  5. NYCmike says:

    Wes,

Still waiting on you to determine which United States citizens are allowed to opine on Syria, and other foreign policy issues, seeing as how 90%+ of the country does not volunteer for the armed forces.

  6. Wes says:

Mikey, I know you think of yourself as America’s Sun Tzu because of your cowardly decision to support the Iraq War so long as you yourself never had to put your own sorry ass on the line, but you’re just a pusillanimous, jingoistic bitchboy.

  7. NYCmike says:

Have you reached your daily quota of words with at least 5 syllables yet?

  9. NYCmike says:

I found Wes on another site:

“The interrogatory which inaugurated this particular interlocution presupposes the existence of an erudite but languorous subclass of Quora participants who are prepared to eschew the customary virtues of transparency and comprehensibility by abandoning the apothegmatic and the laconic and choosing instead a wilfully perverse course of superfluous prolixity, unwarranted circumlocution (not to mention the intrusive parenthetical intercalation of tangential ephemera) and pernicious obfuscation in order to achieve a result whereby the transmission of semantic content is fatally subordinated to an egregious, vulgar, literary braggadocio in which the superficial and ephemeral grandiloquence of an unfettered and intemperate vocabulary coruscates inconsequentially to the detriment of interpersonal communication, pedagogy or empathetic rapprochement.”

  10. NYCmike says:

  11. Wes says:

Mikey is so stupid he compares my use of one word with five syllables to the pedantic jargon spewed by a Quora user.

Of course if Mikey could read anything besides picture books he too could have an intelligent vocabulary and possibly plow pulchritudinous strippers. ?

  12. Phil says:

Minneapolis Mayor charges $530,000 for security costs for the Trump rally there tomorrow. Twenty six times what the city charged for a similar rally for President Obama (20K) in the same building.

The left wing city mayor doesn’t care how outrageous that looks.

The left’s motto – “whatever it takes”

  13. NYCmike says:

    “plow pulchritudinous strippers”

-I was never much for the buffet line.

My parents taught me a bit differently.

Big words don’t carry much weight compared to good deeds done with humility, and preferably in silence.

  14. NYCmike says:

    I read something similar.

Secret Service is in charge of security. The mayor will end up looking like an idiot, and Trump will gain more voters in a tight battleground state.

  17. Wes says:

Good deeds as in demanding a war you have every intention of studiously avoiding while sending others to die for your “ideals,” Mikey?

    Those kinds of good deeds?

  18. Wes says:

Monty Python calls Mikey out for demanding the 2003 Iraq War while hiding under his bed to avoid it:

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BZwuTo7zKM8

  19. NYCmike says:

#18 – Wes is back to it.

This is why I asked for you to let us know who is allowed to opine, and when, in regard to foreign affairs.

And, since you were just as “cowardly” as I was, since you did not serve, how is it that you have any opinion on the use of our military? Is there ever a reason for you to agree to send troops, since you will be sending others to potentially “die for YOUR “ideals,””?

  20. Bitterlaw says:

For those keeping score at home, neither Wes nor NYC served in the military. By Wes’ logic that makes both of them and anybody else who chose to not serve in the military a coward.

Do our veterans at HHR agree with cowardly Wes?

  21. NYCmike says:

Wes, why is it that you feele the need to lie about my “ideals”?

    I demanded nothing.

I did think we were correct to go into Iraq, as it was explained. The same we are still in Germany and Japan, I could see where we used Iraq as a long-term staging area to keep the peace. BUT, that strategy would be combined with a ruthless destruction of the enemy, with the overwhelming use of force which would help keep our soldiers safe.

If you agree with withdrawal from all of these areas, just say so.

  22. NYCmike says:

“By Wes’ logic that makes both of them and anybody else who chose to not serve in the military a coward.”

-Using “Wes’ logic” is probably my biggest mistake!

  23. Wes says:

Did I support the Iraq War, Bitter?

As I recall I’ve repeatedly said it was an unjustified war based on a lie. Mikey demanded it. Why wasn’t he there?

I can name three people off the top of my head who joined specifically to fight in that war. I disagree with their sentiments, but at least their actions matched their rhetoric.

Why was Mikey—by all accounts an able-bodies man in his 30s at the time of the war—afraid to fight for his ersatz ideals?

  24. VictrC says:

As a vet who served and in multiple theaters I would appreciate it if both Mikey and Wes stopped arguing about it. It is honestly kind of disturbing and hurtful. I served voluntarily and happily, and some missions were good, some had specious benefits and origins. Trust me, going into the Balkans was just as foolish as Iraq…and run worse, but both had benefits as well.

One does not have to have served to have an opinion, so neither are cowards. I fought for each of them to have the freedom to make their decisions about war heard, so neither is a coward.

Can we move on to arguing about something else, or better yet, discussing what are the best ways to ensure a victory in 2020 so Americans don’t suffer what would come from a D victory.

    Thanks all

  25. NYCmike says:

    VictrC,

    Thank you for your service.

I did not serve. I don’t apologize for that. I made a choice, which this nation affords its citizens.

In your opinion, is a private citizen who did not volunteer allowed to have an opinion at any time in regard to the use of the military?

  26. NYCmike says:

I see you already expressed an answer in regard to my question.

    Thanks.

  27. VictrC says:

    Mike

I did answer, but will again. Absolutely, someone who didn’t serve can opine in on whether to use the military. Service isn’t a prequisite to either support, or criticize, military involvement.

Wes is fully entitled to his opinion on the Iraqi war, as it was handled poorly. I disagree with him on the WMD argument, I think those who had intimate knowledge of Iraq pre war would probably agree with me, regardless, the war was carried out with poor planning.

You can have your opinion on Syria, as well. I have a different opinion of our involvement overseas because of perspective and dealing with foreign govts. I agree that “pulling out of Syria” would be the absolute wrong move right now, but I doubt that Trump will actually do it.

    I hope that clarifies all.

    Now can we move on?

  28. Wes says:

The thing about it is, Mikey, that you brought this on yourself. I didn’t say a goddamn thing about Syria, but you needed to start a fight.

    You got one.

    Live with it, bitch.

At this point, one of the biggest factors favoring Trump’s re-election is how crazy the Democrats are behaving. The impeachment attempt is a stupid mistake. Add that to the socialist ramblings of the far left Democrat presidential candidates, and Trump, despite his flaws, becomes the lesser of two evils. I will put up with the clown show (which is at times is entertaining) for good economic policies. If the election were today, I would vote for Trump, despite disagreeing with many of the things he is doing.

Just as an update regarding Syria, the U.S. has taken steps to inhibit the Turkish air force in any attack on the Kurds.

“While Ankara’s operation is now imminent, its plans could be hampered by the Pentagon’s decision on Monday to remove Turkey from the “air tasking order” in northeast Syria and revoke its access to surveillance intelligence.

Although this would make it more difficult for Turkey to coordinate its air operations, it would not make it impossible, according to Can Kasapoglu, security and defence director at the Istanbul-based Centre for Economics and Foreign Policy Studies.

“Any setbacks in the use of heavy air power could bring about serious shortfalls and hardships for ground operations,” he said.

Why is Turkey expanding its military operations in northern Syria? (8:33) Kasapoglu outlined two options for Turkish air operations. The first would be to ignore the US and carry out flights with F-16 and F-4 fighter bombers.
“In such case, the Pentagon would find itself in an even harder situation of deciding between scrambling fighter jets to intercept a NATO ally’s aircraft … or allowing its ‘airspace closure ultimatum’ to be inevitably rendered abortive,” Kasapoglu said.

The other choice would be to use armed aerial drones to back up ground troops, although these would not be able to carry the heavy weapon payloads of manned aircraft.”

In many ways, Obama was the father of ISIS. His disastrous Iraq policies, including abandoning the Sunni Awakening, was disastrous.
It lead to hundreds of thousands of deaths, the practical extermination of Christianity in Iraq, and the unleashing of mass terrorism in the U.S. and Europe. Any Democrat who criticizes Trump over Syria needs to acknowledge what a disaster Obama’s policies were.

The impeachment attempt is a stupid mistake.

    – I keep reading this, but there’s zero evidence it’s the case. Trump is a widely unpopular president (rarely above 43% on average) who asked a foreign government to investigate his political rival. The polls continue to show that support, at least for an impeachment inquiry, is around 55% and support for removing Trump from office polls just below the 50% mark in reputable polls.

I seriously doubt the voters in swing districts who elected Democrats in 2018 because they opposed Trump’s erratic behavior are suddenly going to turn on the Democrats for whom they voted because Trump continues to act in an erratic fashion and abused his power.

Almost certainly, Democrats will be eager to tie their opponents to an impeached president who polls in the low 40’s. The politics favor Democrats on this issue.

  158. jason says:

No, Jason fraud. A process laid out in the Constitution is, by definition, constitutional and not a coup. Of course, I know you realize that, but histrionics in defense of the dear leader is all Trumpers have left.

And as for the transcript, the president of Ukraine said his country was ready to buy Javelin missiles. Trump had horrendous favorability polling in 2016, he probably has actually improved from then.

    – The 2020 election is different from 2016 in multiple ways.

First, Trump was able to win with just 45% of the vote because he was running against the most unpopular political figure in the last half century. Clinton isn’t running again no matter how many time Drudge teases it.

Second, Trump’s favorability did matter in 2016 and that’s why he only got 45% of the vote. And in the three years since that election, he’s done nothing to try and increase his total. That’s why the suburbs have moved so strongly away from Republicans.

Third, 2016 was a race between two people who weren’t president. In 2020, Trump will have been president for four years with an actual record on which to judge him.

Fourth, there doesn’t appear as though there’s going to be any sort of third party effort that snags 4 or 5 percent of the vote as there was in 2016. That’s why Trump was able to win with 45%.

Fifth, black voter turnout in Philadelphia, Detroit, and Milwaukee was down substantially in 2016. The margins in those cities is why Trump won those three states. Something tells me black Democrats aren’t going to stay home again as they did with Clinton.

Now, could Trump still win in 2020. I suppose, but 2020 will be nothing like 2016.

    https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2019/10/03/victor-davis-hanson-how-china-woke-america/

“American trade and political appeasement were never interpreted by Beijing as magnanimity to be reciprocated, but always as weakness to be exploited. It was always ludicrous to think that the more concessions on trade and human rights the United States gave, the more China would Westernize and begin to resemble America or a European Union nation.

Even sillier was the old shibboleth that China’s embrace of capitalist reforms — as if by some unwritten, determinist economic law — would lead to constitutional government. But the ability to buy a new cellphone never ensures the right to vote for a candidate of one’s choice.
Instead, all China did was auction off large sections of its new and more efficient economy to crony communist pseudo-capitalists and corrupt provincial officials in order to modernize the country, beef up the military, warp the international trading system — and make itself very rich.

Why did America act in such a suicidal way on China?

Cheap Chinese labor and lax American laws motivated hundreds of U.S. corporations to shut down their domestic assembly plants and relocate to China. At least at first, they were free to pay substandard wages and were mostly unregulated.

Once American businesses got hooked on mega-profits, the Chinese government slowly started stealing their technology, infringing on copyrights and patents, dumping their own merchandise on the world market at prices below production costs, running up huge trade surpluses and manipulating their currency.

But by then, American corporations were so addicted to laissez-faire profitmaking that they turned a blind eye and paid their hush money.”

  237. SanDiegoCitizen says:

It is major hypocrisy for the Democrats to be attacking Trump over the Kurds in Syria, when what he is doing is continuing Obama’s policy, as the Israeli newspaper Haaretz states:

“The seeds for Trump’s decision to allow for the Turkish invasion were sown under the Obama administration, when the Democratic president and his team decided to limit their involvement in the civil war. Only after ISIS invaded Iraq in mid-2014, carried out a genocide against the Yazidi community and beheaded foreign hostages did the Americans decide to directly intervene in the war in Syria by backing the YPG, starting in September 2014. The United States abandoned the plan to rely on Arab rebels to take on ISIS — in part due to the rebels’ refusal to commit themselves to fighting ISIS alone — while ignoring the Assad regime, responsible for most civilian casualties and destruction in Syria.
The tactical assistance to the YPG shifted to a partnership, with the Americans deploying special forces in areas under the control of the group. The United States encouraged the YPG to include non-Kurdish fighters in their ranks — leading to the creation of the SDF, which now counts about 70,000 fighters in its ranks.
But even the logic pursued by the Obama administration of narrowly focusing on the counter-ISIS mission would have led to a U.S. withdrawal once ISIS’s territorial “caliphate” was destroyed, leaving the SDF in the lurch. Even if the United States had mediated negotiations over autonomy between the Assad regime and the SDF, as advocated by former Obama administration officials, the regime’s track record shows that under Russian pressure, it has only allowed limited autonomy inside a handful of formerly rebel-held towns in Daraa.

Rebels who have left these towns have been arrested by the regime and assassinated. This experience is unlikely to be repeated in an area covering a third of Syria. The regime could have just waited out the United States and retaken SDF-held areas, reinstituting its full control over internal security — a top priority of the regime.

Trump, similarly to Obama, seems to believe that conflict is a natural state in the Middle East, unsolvable. Kurds and Turks are “natural enemies,” he said Monday, and conflict between them can only be “held off.” Obama infamously stated that “the Middle East is going through a transformation … rooted in conflicts that date back millennia.” Such a cynical and essentialist perspective provides Western elites with an easy excuse for inaction or empowerment of strongmen. The resulting policy means that none of the root causes of instability and violence in the Middle East are addressed, namely the kleptocratic and oppressive regimes of the region, forcing the United States to launch occasional interventions when violence begins spilling over.”

Both Obama and Trump treatment of the Kurds is unacceptable. We need to recognize at least their self-governance, and continue to provide U.S. military assistance. Obama and Secretary of State Clinton were set on pulling U.S. troops out of Syria as well. If the Democrats really claim to support the Kurds, then they need to denounce the post policies of Obama and Clinton; otherwise all we are seeing is political hypocrisy.

    2. Do you believe the current inquiry into is Impeachment is by-partisan? Fair?
    3. Do you believe that the President deserves due process, like any American, in this process.

    She is not “hiding” actually.

She DOES have diplomatic immunity. I am not even sure Trump can waive it, it is an international convention.

Foreign diplomats have used it in the US at will for decades btw, even for serious crimes.

“An international law that largely shields foreign diplomats and their family members from criminal prosecution has come under scrutiny after the wife of an American diplomat left Britain following a crash that killed a 19-year-old man.

But despite growing calls in the U.K. for U.S. officials to waive the woman’s diplomatic immunity protections, such a revocation rarely happens, the State Department says, and experts don’t think this case will be any different.

“It’s highly unlikely that the U.S. will waive immunity,” says Craig Barker, a dean and international law professor at London South Bank University. “I don’t think the special relationship to the U.K. will make an iota of a difference.”

Amazing pitcher and a lock for the Hall of Fame.

Anything can happen in a five game series and last night just is another confirmation of it. Dodgers are the class of the National. That means nothing in a short playoff series as we saw last night. You are always one hanging slider away from losing it. I don’t care how good your club is. Same thing could happen to the Astros tonight. Astros are better than the Rays but it means nothing in a five game playoff. Cole goes tonight and could pitch lights out again and could easily get beat 2-1 on just one bad pitch that gets deposited in the left field seats. The playoffs are a crap shoot regardless of what your team does in the regular season.

Because of that gesture, The Star was told, the girl was sent to Principal Jeremy McDonnell’s office, and the other students involved were also talked to. The school resource officer recommended that she be arrested, the source said. She was detained by police and later released to her mother.

Now, Lindsey wants us in Syria and to protect the Kurds for 200 years. I like Goober, but on foreign policy he is wrong.

“Your YPG Kurdish problem is a big problem,” Graham told the pranksters. He was referring to the Kurdish People’s Protection Units, a group that began fighting ISIS as part of the Syrian Democratic Forces in 2015—with support from the U.S.—but is considered a terrorist group by Turkey because of its push to establish an autonomous state for the Kurds on the Turkish-Syrian border.

“I told President Trump that Obama made a huge mistake in relying on the YPG Kurds,” Graham continued. “Everything I worried about has come true, and now we have to make sure Turkey is protected from this threat in Syria. I’m sympathetic to the YPG problem, and so is the president, quite frankly.”
