“On the verge” is a little misleading with those numbers.

If it was my blog I would say just say Dems lead in all 3 races in NC.

Meanwhile, PA fabricating as many deaths as possible so they can delay re-opening.

“UPDATE 12:30 p.m.: According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health there are 1,102 additional positive cases of coronavirus in the state, bringing the total number to 44,366 cases. Officials said there is an increase of 479 deaths as a result of their continued work to reconcile data from various sources. These deaths have occurred over the last two weeks.”

  4. jason says:

“There is an increase of 479 deaths as a result of their continued work”

    Could have stopped right there.

    NYT/Siena 10/20 NC Clinton 49 Trump 41

Now that was “on the verge”.

    Still wrong though.

  6. Country Dick Montana says:

But it is only showing 135 deaths to get up to the 1235 that PA is reporting. So it looks like Worldometers was ahead of PA on PA’s count.

  7. jason says:

Between 9/17 and 10/25 there were 25 polls recorded on RCP for NC.

Clinton led in 24 of them.

  8. DW says:

Trump is probably taking a hit in the polls due to the corona crisis, but the other side of this is most people polled hear “Biden” and think of the white guy who was the other side of Obama’s ticket. They don’t know yet that he cannot string together sentences without help.

PPP is out with a poll showing Biden leading Trump in Texas by 1, hurry Dave W, get a new thread that says Trump will lose Texas too!!

  9. dblaikie says:

Well it is official Fauci just announced that Remdesivir is effective. This first test was with folks who were serious or critical. The next test will reveal how effective it is with folks who have mild symptoms. Thank God we have left the testing, testing, testing mantra and are now into treatments, treatments, treatments. Fauci said it was just the start. It should be an official covid19 drug with the FDA in a very short time. We have turned a corner!

  10. dblaikie says:

Like I said a few hundred posts ago, I had to endure all these polls back in 2016. For me this cycle I plan in reading these polls with interest, but rarely take them seriously. I am not going to waste time trying to debunk each one. If folks here want to think that they are accurate — I respect that and won’t argue. But unless the nature of the media changes I am going to consider these polls as efforts to drive a narrative. An accurate picture is secondary.

So at the start of this cycle, and I am glad that it is now a part of rcp is that I am going to put more emphasis of people who actually are putting down money on this election at the various betting sites. Just so you know as of today the average is Trump +7.5 over demented Joe.

  11. dblaikie says:

For those who are hoping that we stay in lock down for months here is a quote from Fauci that is going to hit you hard with this breakthrough: “The data shows that remdesivir has a clear-cut, significant, positive effect in diminishing the time to recovery.”

  12. SanDiegoCitizen says:

U.S. Survey polls are know to have their quirks. The overall poll was of 700 adults, 604 registered voters, and 580 likely voters. They released the Trump approval poll of registered voters; then the Trump/Biden race of likely voters.

    Of the 604 registered voters; Trump had a 49% approval rating, and a 49% disapproval rating;

Of the 580 likely voters (40% Democratic 36% Republican; and 22% independent) Biden led 50% to 45% for Trump.

MNW, I just posting what was said on the moving bar on Fox Business headlines, “Stocks rally over Gilead’s positive news over Remdesivir.”

  20. dblaikie says:

Testing everyone really isn’t that important to getting this country back going. What is important is that if you get it, there is a treatment for it. That is the game changer and it began today!!

  21. dblaikie says:

Sorry about obsessing but this wasn’t a twitter post about this Drug. This was Dr. Fauci reading a prepared statement about it.

  22. dblaikie says:

And just to be clear, I am not claiming that this drug is cure. I am saying it is effective against Covid19. It is just the first. But it is a huge first. It shows that there are drugs out there that can defeat this virus if you get. In next weeks we will hopefully hear about other treatment that when combined with this treatment a death sentence with this drug is very, very, very rare.

  23. Tina says:

I think also gdp, while bad, was expected.

About half of the gdp decline was due to Healthcare.

  24. Tina says:

Not to mention that Dr. Fauci finally gave a clear 5 minute talk on the Gildead drug and it’s promises.

  25. dblaikie says:

Politically this news turns the media narrative about how bad Trump has been about tests (bogus) to we will have treatments. Because of that I believe that the media will soon be under cutting the news about this drug. They don’t want any positive news.

  26. Tina says:

The drug is not a cure all.

    Fauci says it’s like AZT

    An important “first step.”

Also, seeing the comments made by Robbie in the last couple of weeks, has he had any new thinking in regard to the November election?

    – This is fantastic news and kudos to Trump. As I wrote yesterday, if he can make an announcement a vaccine has been approved sometime around Labor Day, he would be hard to beat in November and, frankly, he would deserve to win if he can make this happen.

    – I’m not saying one is more important than the other permanently. I’m saying, right now, coronavirus is paramount. And if coronavirus is brought under control by June-ish, it will lead directly into the goal of keeping Biden out of the White House.

  34. dblaikie says:

I repeat I know that Remdesivir or HCQ are not cures. But they are treatments. If this drug is effective with people who a serious case of the virus who knows what effect it will have on a person with a mild case? Down the road if it is given in conjunction with other drugs maybe it will make an even bigger difference. In short, we do not have a cure, that I suppose will be a vaccine. But if you get Covid19 but know that there is an effective treatment or multiple treatments then that is a game changer.

We need to move off of what we can’t do as a country and move concentrate on what we can do. The biggest mitigation for this virus is to remove the panic and fear the media have instilled. An effective treatment goes along way in doing that!

For the first time from today, Wednesday 29 April 2020, the government’s daily figure will include deaths that have occurred in all settings where there has been a positive COVID-19 test, including hospitals, care homes and the wider community. Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales already report out-of-hospital deaths. Today’s figures have been revised retrospectively by PHE since the first death on 2 March 2020 to include additional data sources. U.S. Death Rate From All Causes (Including COVID-19) At Multi-Year LOW

The U.S. crude death rate (mortality from all causes) still remains near multi-year lows despite COVID-19. The CDC tracks deaths attributed to the flu, pneumonia, and all causes on this website.

You can download the data as verify for yourself: Just go to this CDC website and click the green ‘downloads’ button. They have complete data for total U.S. deaths up until week 14 (week ending April 5th, 2020).

At the very least, this data shows we need to analyze COVID-19 deaths in the context of the broader U.S. mortality rate from all causes. It appears normal deaths are being attributed to COVID-19 if the patient is COVID-19+, even if another underlying chronic cause is responsible.

    Jason,

I’ve only noticed a slight uptick in people outdoors. Most businesses are still closed. Only barber shops, nail salons, tattoo parlors, and bowling alleys were allowed to re-open last Friday. On Monday, restaurants (for dine-in customers) and movie theaters were allowed to open though at very limited capacity. In restaurants, there are very strict rules in place. For example, all tables are at least 6 feet apart, all people wanting to dine together must be from the same household, all workers wear masks, etc. Some malls will open over the weekend, again at very limited capacity.

I support this 100% but we do need to keep a very close eye on the number of new cases. I think most people are taking a “wait and see” stance and I’m among them. If a week or two goes by and we seem to be doing ok, then you’ll see more people out and about.

As for haircuts, I would recommend cutting your own hair. I’ve been cutting my own hair for the last 18 years. The last 10 years I’ve buzzed it as much as possible. No combs, no fancy hair products, no barbers, nada. Saved lots of $$ and with it bought some TSLA stock near its recent bottom. I’m happy with that trade 😀

An overlooked voting bloc is emerging as a potential problem for Democrats: young men of color.

Male African American and Latino voters — particularly those under the age of 35 — are showing a surprising openness to President Donald Trump’s re-election bid, according to interviews with leading Democratic and Republican strategists and a review of polling data.

Democrats and Republicans who have analyzed the data say the relative affinity young male voters of color have for Trump is rooted in both an acceptance of his bellicose persona and an optimism about the economy.

    Robbie,
Seems your new governor is another of the many Democrats who run as “moderates” in red or purple states but are anything but. Sorry y’all are stuck with that clown. June 22nd?…..and you have 310 currently in Kentucky hospitals? Man, that’s outrageous. Anything your legislature can do? I’m guessing both houses are Republican.

    – Disclaimer: Andy Beshear is governor solely because his opponent was Matt Bevin. Republicans won every other statewide race last Fall by wide margins. This is a Republican state.

Unfortunately, Kentucky is a state where the governor has a lot of unilateral power. The state legislature meets 60 days in even years and 30 days in odd years. Until a decade or so ago, they only met every other year. And unless the governor calls a special session, there’s nothing the Republican super majorities in each chamber can do.

In Late March, the legislature asked Beshear to call a special session which could be suspended in case they were needed to help with the response. Beshear dismissed it out of hand because all it takes to override anything he does is a simple majority vote in each chamber.

Theoretically, the Republican House and Senate have more than enough votes to simply impeach and remove both Beshear and his Lt. governor and make the Senate president the governor. Of course, they would never make such purely political power move, but I would think the threat should at least be there.

A man named Damon Thayer is the majority leader in the state senate. He said yesterday on a podcast the legislature was powerless right now, but said restricting Beshear and future governors will be on the table in January. Small comfort. I’ve written him three time urging they at least hold a press conference to pushback on Beshear, but that hasn’t happened.

    – He’s using this to run his re-election campaign that won’t happen for another 3.5 years because I think he realizes his powers are going to be greatly diminished next year. Republicans can run the state by proposing and passing their own bills and budgets and then overriding his vetoes by one vote.

Because of the inclusion of deaths that may have occurred weeks ago, the Worldometer death total is over 2200 for today for the US.

But this death rate cannot be sustained with the drop in cases, 4 days in a row now around 25k. The mortality rate for COVID-19 in the US is not 10%, so we will have to see a substantial drop in the number of deaths very soon.
