A local Fox News story in North Carolina interviewed a family from Guilford County who had lived in Sweden during the epidemic. A quote:

“Sweden decided against lockdowns in order to protect the economy, but Wolschon says businesses are still struggling.

“Businesses have closed. We went to one yesterday that’s going to be closing, and there have been layoffs. The economy has been affected either way,” she said.

Even though the situation seems dire in Sweden, the Wolschons all same they would rather be there than in the United States.

“I felt lucky to be here to be able to go places to go to school and hang out with friends,” said 10th grader Charlie Wolschon.

Laura says the Swedish people don’t have the same fear as Americans.

“Here people seem to be more relaxed, and if you like decide to wear a mask, great,” she said. “If you decide not to wear a mask, then OK, nobody’s going to be upset about it.”

Montana is going to be an interesting story this election season. My thesis has always been that the senate and presidential races follow the same trajectory and go to the same party. This happened in 2016 (close call in NH) and I see no reason why it can’t happen again in 2020.

But Montana could turn into a special case. After all, in 2016, Trump and Bullock won their respective state-wide races. Only difference was that Bullock was running for Governor, this time he’s running for the Senate.

In 2016, there were plenty or Trump/Bullock ticket splitters. Bullock has good job approval numbers. He’s got a real shot.

      Factors in Bullock’s favor
      – He’s already won state wide twice
      – He has good job approval numbers
      – Montana has ticket splitters

      Factors no in Bullock’s favor
      – Montana is a solid red state
      – He’ll be running against an incumbent.

the lessons that ought to have followed the 2016 election—lessons about the importance of understanding other Americans, the necessity of resisting tribalism, and the centrality of the free exchange of ideas to a democratic society—have not been learned. Instead, a new consensus has emerged in the press, but perhaps especially at this paper: that truth isn’t a process of collective discovery, but an orthodoxy already known to an enlightened few whose job is to inform everyone else.

Markets sure want that V-shaped recovery. It’s earnings season. Markets ignored the down Q1 earnings. My guess is markets will also ignore down Q2 earnings, instead looking ahead to that perfect recovery.

At some point, the data in earnings needs to reflect that glowing optimism. It’s anyone’s guess what happens but as long as markets are operating on “hope”, then they will likely go up.

So the computers and the guys that make the buying decisions are operating on “hope.” Million, no Billions of dollars based on “Hope” because they want to see a V shaped recovery? As my marketing professor said many years ago “Hope is not a strategy.”

I can understand emotional one day or one week swings based on good or bad news. But several months. That’s not “Hope” And we do not have a V shaped recovery overall. More like a checkmark.

BTW what is Tesla’s PE ratio now…negative 47 gazillion?

      #13, Dick-
You’re right that most trading these days is done by computers acting on AI and/or pre-programmed triggers based on charting and technicals. The trades are automatically triggered, news is not a factor.

But behind it all, it is humans that write that code. Those humans can easily tweak the software, but they have not. They want the V-shared recovery OR they want short term gains OR they feel they have no choice but to buy in for fear of missing out, low rates, or whatever reason. There’s a million factors that go into market behavior. But if you look at it from a macro level, it sure looks like the market has priced in a V-shaped recovery. If the data does not support that, then we will trade sideways for some time. I agree that the broader markets will see a “check-shaped” or “nike swoosh shaped” recovery. Tech sector has already recovered, it’s setting all time highs every day. I don’t see another crash, even if the data is bad. The Federal Reserve will be ready to inject liquidity into the system to keep stock prices steady. In my opinion, this is entirely appropriate, others will disagree.

As for TSLA, it reports earnings on July 22. If it shows a profit, it will be 4 quarters in a row of profitability. Conventional market measures do not apply to Tesla, they never have. It’s a disruptive company that’s creating its own market.

Tesla is similar to Amazon. For years it lost money, when it finally started turning profits, it’s PE was through the roof. Plenty of investors waited for the PE to come down to a reasonable level. They are still waiting 15 years later as the stock zoomed past $3,000 last week.

Yes I’m a Tesla Bull, always have been. I think the stock has gotten ahead of itself, though. But if Tesla reports a profit, it could go higher. There’s also speculation that Tesla will be added to the S&P 500. If that’s true, that stock will go even higher in the short term.

If Tesla reports a loss, well watch out below.

    46. Big Joe says:

      Dick,

One of the reasons I like Tesla is that it’s not just a car manufacturer. It also pretty much owns the self-driving space. While I’m skeptical of the self-driving future, maybe others aren’t. This can be leveraged into self-driving taxis and self-driving delivery services which opens up many other markets. Then there are electric semi’s which is another market. Seems like sci-fi but who knows.

There’s also talk of some “million mile” battery. I’m not sure if its just bizarro hype or if it’s real.

Ultimately, the market will decide. People will buy electric if it’s convenient for them. So yes, it will come down to affordability, reliability, range, and charging time. Tesla has been dropping prices and improving convenience so the trend is good here.

Existing auto companies have a lot of catching up to do. The transformation may be too much for some.

I know it sounds like I worship Tesla, but when I bought into it, it was just one of many holdings. Since then, it has become the hottest stock of the century which is why I post about it.

    49. Big Joe says:

One last reason we should all be interested in what happens with Tesla stock. It could become a member of the S&P 500.

Why is this important? If it makes it, you now have the hottest stock on the market in the index. A laggard gets kicked out of the index. S&P 500 performs better having Tesla instead of the laggard. Potential electoral implications in Nov.

To make the S&P 500, you need at least 4 consecutive quarters of profitability (among other factors that Tesla already meets). Tesla has 3 and is set to report on July 22. That will be an important day.

      BJ

    50. PresidentPaul! says:

TSLA’s market cap is 300 billion though. At some point the starting price has to matter.

Virtue signalling the ancient past is not pretty. It accomplishes nothing and is simply immature strutting. Especially when the people doing it, probably have never done anything useful for an individual of color.

Clinton had a Confederate flag-like issue of his own. Arkansas Code Annotated, Section 1-5-107, provides as follows:
      (a) The Saturday immediately preceding Easter Sunday of each year is designated as ‘Confederate Flag Day’ in this state.
      (b) No person, firm, or corporation shall display an Confederate flag or replica thereof in connection with any advertisement of any commercial enterprise, or in any manner for any purpose except to honor the Confederate States of America. [Emphasis added.]

Hey Robbie, you need to have a talk with Bill and Hillary Clinton about Arkansas Confederate Flag Day:

“As first family of Arkansas the Clintons set aside a special day each year to honor the Confederate Flag.

      – Honest question. From what year did this come? Would you agree there’s been a definite reexamination of the Confederacy and its appropriateness in society? My favorite show growing up in the early 1980’s was the Dukes of Hazard. But let’s be serious, that show would never be made today.

    92. SanDiegoCitizen says:

I would wait, like McConnell did, until after the election before appointing a new justice. In the election the Republicans could use the future appointment as an argument to get Republican and conservative voters to turn out and for Republicans in Senate races.

If a new justice was quickly ramped through by Trump and the Republicans; then the Democrats, if they win the Senate, could use the rushed appointment as a basis for their court-packing scheme to increase the size of the Supreme Court to appoint several new liberal judges.

      Tough call either way.

Democrats once they get rid of the filibuster (which is a given and Biden confirmed it today) will pack the court regardless just as they’ll add two Democratic Senators with DC statehood.

Anyone who thinks they are going to hold back on their radical agenda with control of all three branches is living in la la land and hasn’t been watching Democrats for the last decade. What do you think they are? Republicans? They crave power and never hold back.

Anyway, Ginsburg isn’t dying. She never does.

    102. SanDiegoCitizen says:

      95. “Would you agree there’s been a definite reexamination of the Confederacy and its appropriateness in society?”

Part of my family is from New Hampshire, and I had many ancestors who fought in the Union Army, so have no use for the Confederate cause. In addition I think what happened to Union prisoners at Andersonville was a war crime; and a lot of Confederate leaders should have been sent to the gallows for it. The Confederate officer who ran Andersonville, where about 13,000 Union prisoners were basically starved to death, was executed. The Daughters of the Confederacy subsequently erected a statue to him.

I personally do not believe that there should be a statue erected for any Confederate officer or leader that glorifies the role they played in the Civil War. However, I do not believe a statue of a former Confederate should be torn down if the statue is non-Civil War related. I have mixed feelings about the Confederate flag — many argue it represents southern heritage in general. Apparently at one time the Clintons, and many other liberals, had no problem with it. All these issues need to be discussed; but the mob rule attitude now is totally wrong — as are the politicians who are kowtowing to the mob.

Despite all the doomsday predictions, we actually had fewer deaths today than a week ago.

We are about a week away from when IHME predicts a fast drop in deaths “with universal masks”.

Since probably most people are wearing masks in the hotspots, let’s see if this prediction works out.

According to IHME, deaths will drop to around 400 by August 1st.

Big Joe makes a good case for Bullock above. His points are valid.

If even in Montana enough voters are comfortable with socialism, Bullock could win.
