CO: Tancredo To Quit

Not the presidential race, but a run for re-election to the US House. So says The Rocky Mountain News.

Even if he loses his long-shot bid for the White House, Rep. Tom Tancredo will be leaving the U.S. House of Representatives at the end of 2008.

Tancredo, 61 , waited until after the Colorado Rockies’ last out of the World Series on Sunday night before announcing that he plans to retire from Congress at the end of this, his fifth term.

“It’s the fact that I really believe I have done all I can do in the House, especially about the issue about which I care greatly (immigration),” Tancredo said in a phone interview from a motel in Iowa.

Bush got 60% in Tancredo’s district in both 2000 and 2004, so it would seem to be safe for Republicans. The bad news is that it appears we have to deal with Tancredo for the rest of the Primary season even though he has no shot whatsoever of winning the nomination…none….

“Dealing with Tancredo,” i.e., listening to his wake-up call, is not bad news to me.

I view him as a genuine hero for raising the illegal alien invasion issue in the national debate.

Eh, I view Tancredo to be a quasi-demagogue. We need to have a rational conversation about immigration in this country, one that looks at both the problems of illegal entry and our economy’s reliance on this labor source.

I agree with you. Both sides are polarized and it is not necessary. On the one hand, Lou Dobbs only purpose these days seems to be to fan the flame of fear in regards to illegals. However, the illegals do not help themselves when they waive the Mexican flag at rallies.

Both sides need to take a deep breath.

  4. Sam says:

Wow… I pretty much never agree with you, cam, but I agree completely with that. This “let’s bash illegal immigrants all the time in all things” stuff is absolutely insane, but saying “eh, it’s ok to come into our country illegally” thing is too. Better border enforcement, a more active border patrol, increased economic opportunity in Mexico, and a path to citizenship for illegals already here which requires they learn English is totally the way to go…

Just say no to the extremes. It’s done nothing but destroy discourse.

  5. Tina says:

Also deport the illegals that cross here and sanction and close businesses that knowingly hire them and build a fence on both sides of the border. Finally, close off all social welfare/benefits to illegals.

  6. Tina says:

I still predict that illegal immigration will be a top issue in the upcoming election. Its up to an R to push this issue given the open border candidates on the D side.

  7. Sam says:

I can agree with sanctioning businesses that knowingly hire illegals, and cutting off social welfare and benefits to illegals, but not to their kids. I’m sorry, I believe in allowing illegals’ kids to go to public schools. The kids didn’t do anything wrong, and I think it’s morally outrageous to deny them an education because of their parents’ illegal actions.

  8. Tina says:

You are entitled to your opinion Sam. I do tend to agree with your other points though.

  9. Wes says:

Not good news for Republicans when they have a Congressman retire from Colorado. Two of the last three who did so saw their seats go to the Dems, once in 2004 and once in 2006. How the GOP can be melting down in that state is beyond me, but they’ve found a way and apparently like it.

  10. Purple Elephant AKA Erich says:

Oh sure foster yet ANOTHER generation of lazy slobs. I favour cutting of all government ‘benefits’ of any kind to those who don’t earn them.

  11. Sam says:

Well, gee, so why don’t we just get rid of public education altogether, since kids don’t EARN anything anyways. Your comment is both racist and arrogant, why do you think there’s all this talk of punishing employers who hire illegals. It’s because they work DAMN HARD in back-breaking labor the likes of which you would NEVER do yourself or want your children anywhere NEAR. Lazy? My ass.
