Excellent article in National Review entitled: “The Swedish Exception (?) — and New York City.” It is a great read, particularly for those who are lockdown cultists.

“While novel coronavirus cases have spiked across several parts of Europe, including Spain, France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, Sweden—where a countrywide lockdown was never issued—continues to report a downward trend in new cases and new deaths.
Sweden’s latest case-fatality ratio (portion of deaths compared to total cases) was reported to be 7.1 percent. The figure is more than half the percentage reported in the U.K. (15.1 percent), half that of Italy and Belgium (each reporting 14.2 percent) and nearly half that of France (13.4 percent), according to Johns Hopkins University.
We will not know, of course, know how Sweden truly compares with other countries until we see how any second wave plays out elsewhere and, of course, in Sweden itself, but The Spectator’s Matthew Lynne is right to make this point:
True, infections [in Sweden] were high to start with, and so was the mortality rate from Covid-19, at least compared to its immediate neighbours. Right now, however, it doesn’t look as if the final tally will be much different to anywhere else. But the economy will emerge in far better condition, with less lost output, and less extra debt as well.
There is a lesson in that for other countries. Of course it is important to protect health systems and make sure they are not overwhelmed. But it is also important to protect the economy. If you don’t, very quickly there aren’t any jobs to go back to, and there won’t be any money to pay for healthcare or for anything else for that matter. Sweden has done a better job of protecting output than any other major, developed country. And if a second wave does arrive in the autumn or winter, the rest of the world should take note — and not rush straight back into lockdown no matter what the pressure to do so might be”.

It was a good day of new case reports from the states. Quite a few states have rolled over and are in decline. The seven day moving average shows that quite nicely. Quite a few other states have plateaued and could be in the process of beginning to decline.

The seven day national moving average has rolled over quite nicely and in a way it never did in April. That’s because so many states began to rise at the same time and now they have begun to fall at the same time.

I doubt we’ll get as low as we did in early June (around 20,000 a day), but I think we’ll be in much better shape by Labor Day. Youyang Gu’s model, widely seen as the most accurate, suggests we should gradually decline until October or so and then plateau.

      – I understand your apprehensions, but let me offer a few counterpoints. First, I don’t think the number of cases per day should play a role in the approval. It’s great they are going down right now, but they could also shoot up again. Corona remains quite contagious and we need to make progress in order to prevent an economic calamity that can’t be salvaged by more government spending.

Second, I think we have accepted how to live in the short term with these onerous restrictions like social distancing, masks, capacity reductions, but that can only continue for so long. People are growing tired of this. Most importantly, there are certain industries that can’t operate under this “new normal”. Cruise lines can’t even sail.

Third, I think it’s fair to worry about the safety of vaccines, but it’s also fair to note this is the not the 1960’s or 1970’s. Machine learning, super computing, and past trial and error have given scientists a far better idea of what works and what works safely.

The vaccine is a left wing talking point.

      – No, it’s not. It’s very necessary for life to return to the way it was in February 2020. We can’t operate as a country or a society for years on end with mask wearing, social distancing, the 6ft rule, capacity reductions, and no in-person school.

As it stands right now, there’s a good chance many students in the country will not attend in-person classes during the entire 2020-2021 school year. That would be devastating for an entire generation of kids and it will have long lasting ramifications going forward.

I think Trump deserves loads and loads of credit for pushing for a vaccine. It’s the single best thing he’s done in his presidency.
And I think he realizes as most do that we can’t approach anything close to normalcy without one. That’s not a leftwing talking point. That’s reality. The only leftwing talking point is them not wanting it to be approved before the election.

Vaccines are the best thing science has done for society. We shouldn’t poo-puh them as some left wing talking point. Nor should we give ANY aid or comfort to the anti-vax movement by saying we don’t need this to resume normal life.

I don’t know about you, but I’d like to go to a concert again. I know my parents desperately want to go on a cruise again. I know schools want to have students in the classroom again. I want to see college football with full stadiums. I want to see The Masters with patrons again. I want to see the middle seat on airliners filled again. I want to see the Indy 500 and the Kentucky Derby with fans again. None of this, none of it, can happen for years and years if we don’t get a vaccine.

In fact most cruise lines have cruises starting in October.

The vaccine is an MSM driven left wing talking point.

That is why you repeat the narrative here.

      – Nice try. Yesterday, the cruise lines announced they would suspend all sailings in US waters until “at least” October 31. And many of the cruises you listed are European sailings. Since American can’t travel to Europe right now, how do Americans sail on European cruises?

      https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/cruises/2020/08/05/us-cruise-industry-extends-covid-19-suspension-until-oct-31/3296043001/

I agree with you, though. We made a tragic mistake allowing a virus with a 99.7% survivability rate to destroy our way of life, but that’s what happened. And trying to convince ourselves that everything is fine right now when it’s clearly not is dumb. Your life may not be severely impacted right now, but millions and millions of people’s lives are being ruined right now.

It’s not a leftwing talking point to say we need a vaccine to allow everything to reopen. It’s the sad truth. Your governor, my governor, and the rest of the governors across the country aren’t going to throw the doors open and give up their emergency powers until there’s a vaccine. That’s just the way it’s going to be. I don’t like it, but that’s reality.

And unless you think it’s ok for kids not to go to in-person classes for as long as 18 months, then we need a vaccine. Unless you think it’s fine for sports to be played without fans for years, then we need a vaccine. Unless you think restaurants can stay afloat for years on end with just 50% of their tables in use, then we need a vaccine. Unless you think churches should either not be allowed to meet or have severely limited attendance, then we need a vaccine.

It is so tiresome to see you blame everything you don’t like or don’t want to be true on liberal talking points. You couldn’t be further from the truth when you say a vaccine is just a liberal talking point. Every single Republican of substance in DC says we need one. Mitch McConnell said just that on CNBC this morning. Is he using leftwing talking points? Should we throw him out of office because he’s using what you believe to be leftwing talking points.

We need a vaccine to get back to normal whether you like it or not.

I have yet to see them do the same when the condition is reversed, and Trump is doing better in the more recent poll.

If these Zogby numbers are true (and I doubt they are. Zogby earned his cred during the 2000 cycle, then lost it all in the subsequent elections), Trump wins almost all these states. We have definitive proof from 2016 that Trump under-polls. Any state where Trump is within 4 points, Trump probably wins that state. Why does Trump under-poll? Because people dont wanna admit they are gonna vote Trump. Admitting you will vote Trump is politically incorrect, and no one wants to risk the stigma of being politically incorrect….even to an anonymous pollster calling you on your smartphone. 2016 proved this phenomenon with Trump. Trump was down 3-8 points in all the national polls to Hillary, and down 2-8 in all the battleground states (rust-belt states, FL, NH.)

      -Greymarch

    117. Greymarch says:

You know, deep down, I think Biden still has the same racial beliefs that most white men of his generation had 60 years ago. He probably wants minorities to have equal rights. Like Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson, FDR and LBJ, he thinks minorities are full-blown human beings and deserve equal rights. But in his heart of hearts, like those four presidents I just listed, I suspect he doesnt truly believe minorities are mentally equal to whites.

I think Biden has the exact same racial beliefs as Trump. Because the media hates Trump, Biden gets a pass on this garbage.

Uncle Joe sounds just like Al Campanis. Do you remember when Ted Koppel asked why there were not more black managers. Let’s take a walk down memory lane. Campanis replied, “No, I don’t believe it’s prejudice. I truly believe that they may not have some of the necessities to be, let’s say, a field manager, or perhaps a general manager.”

He went on: “No, it’s not — it’s not garbage, Mr. Koppel, because I played on a college team, and the center fielder was black, and the backfield at NYU, with a fullback who was black, never knew the difference, whether he was black or white, we were teammates. So, it just might just be — why are black men, or black people, not good swimmers? Because they don’t have the buoyancy.”

      – Before this turns into a long running fight. I am not saying Quinnipiac is correct. I’m not saying McConnell’s in trouble either (he’s not). I’m just telling you what some of their own polling suggested in mid July. I would be shocked if McConnell won by 17 as Morning Consult suggested just as I would be surprised if he only won by 5. I think it’s probably going to be 10 point-ish race.

Country Dick. What do we sell to China anyway? Food? I think our total exports to China were around $175 Billion or less than 1% of our GDP. I’m more worried be about.what we need from them.
We can’t possibly stay reliant on them for critical components,or things like medical supplies. What I mean is for national security related items we should work towards Zero.
If we get cheaper sweatpants and sneakers there ok,but I’d prefer them to be made here. The idea that until 2017 many critical weapon components were made there, and our reliance on drugs made obvious is a scandalous indictment of the Bush and Obama/ Biden administration’s.
For vital items we can’t decouple fast enough, including chip makers etc. Sneakers I can live with.

All of our military weapons systems have Chinese chips and what do you think happens. It appears being infected with certain common cold virus may confer increased immunity to COVID-19. Genetics may also pay a role in infection; for example those with blood type A may be more susceptible to becoming infected. When people used the term “herd immunity” based solely on having antibodies to COVID-19; it does not take into account other reasons some people may not be infected, or not become ill after being infected. In particular, the press seems incapable of understanding the complexity of the virus:

“Previous infections with common cold viruses can train the immune system to recognize SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, according to a new study.
The study, published Aug. 4 in the journal Science, found that immune cells known as T cells that recognize common cold coronaviruses also recognize specific sites on SARS-CoV-2 — including parts of the infamous “spike” protein it uses to bind to and invade human cells.
This existing immune system “memory” may explain why some people have milder COVID-19 infections compared with others; however, the authors stress that this hypothesis is “highly speculative” and requires more research to confirm. That’s because it’s unknown exactly how big a role T cells play in fighting COVID-19 — T cells are just one part of a complex menagerie of molecules and cells that makes up our immune system.
“We have now proven that, in some people, preexisting T-cell memory against common cold coronaviruses can cross-recognize SARS-CoV-2, down to the exact molecular structures,” study co-lead author Daniela Weiskopf, assistant professor at La Jolla Institute for Immunology in La Jolla, California, said in a statement”.

Barack “I, I, I, me, me, me!” Obama thought he was the messiah and could stop the rise of the seas, that he’s a constitutional scholar, and that Hillary Clinton was the most qualified person to ever run for President. And that Michelle has great fashion sense and gives good head.

Bill “Teflon Cigar” Clinton thought he was a gynecologist/cigar maker.

Hillary “Quid Pro Dough” Clinton (aka Felonia “the FBI certified me as too stupid to handle national security documents, I want to be president!” Von Pantsuit) thinks she was a military strategist and that she should run the entire nation.

Alexandria “Commie Barbie” Ocasio-Cortez thinks she’s a brown genius.

The workers in the laimstream media think they are Journalists. (CAUTION, LEFTIST PRESSTITUTES AT WORK!!)

I’m noticing a pattern with Democrats/progressives/”liberals”/socialist/the mainstream media!

    186. SanDiegoCitizen says:

Have to admit what happened in Beirut was suspicious; as someone commented:

“Are you serious? Do you really believe this ridiculous fairy tail?. You don’t just get thousands of tons of explosives from some disabled ship and store it for so many years. Where are the buyers of all this ammonium nitrate? nobody wanted this back all those years?. Why don’t just sell it if it was just handed over to Lebanon?.
The government in lebanon is controlled by hezbollah so it isn’t a surprise that they try to cover up the truth with ridiculous lies about fireworks and thousands of tons of ammonium nitrate being just handed over to lebanon without them knowing what to do with it.”

The ship was supposedly on a journey from the Black Sea to Mozambique through the Suez Canal.
It instead went to Beirut, where the Hezbollah controlled port authorities condemned the ship and forbid it to sale, and it was subsequently abandoned by the owner.

    187. Brandon says:

What’s does “brown genius” mean? Besides you being a racist of course.

    188. Phil says:

I see the woke police has arrived.

    189. Brandon says:

Why the need to reference her skin color?

    190. Tina says:

Yikes! China Biden again forgets how to pronounce, calling a country “Thigh-Land”.

He faulted Trump for “Shifting production to Thigh-land, and to Vietnam ,” before repeating himself, incorrectly again, and finally the third time correctly pronouncing Thailand.

    191. SanDiegoCitizen says:

      196. When you have a presidential candidate who is picking his running mate based on skin color, are you surprised it is coming up in other conversations? How are are you defining racist?

    192. Phil says:

I don’t know. I guess I have the same question every time a leftist throws out the term white privilege.

    193. Brandon says:

Is disparagingly calling a latino person a “brown genius” an appropriate comment? It’s obviously not and anyone who tries to defend that just shows where their cards lie.

    194. Chester says:

196 is a typical triggered snowflake!

Here is something more to trigger you: #kag2020 maga2020!

She is brown, she is ugly, and she’s anything but a genius. She hates our great country, she should LEAVE the country and go to Commie Cuba!

    195. Brandon says:

You can easily say she is not an intelligent person without having to imply it’s because of her race. (And by “you” I mean Chester, not you Phil.)

    196. Brandon says:

Who cares that she is “brown”? Her politics suck regardless of her skin color.

    197. Chester says:

I can but I won’t. #KAG2020 How about you can go back to your safe space: D. Kos and Mother Jones

    198. Brandon says:

#204. I’ve done more to elect Republicans than you ever will. You just mash your keyboard and post drivel.

    199. Phil says:

Bexar County not in yet but Texas cases look to be well down today.

    200. SanDiegoCitizen says:

      200. Agree it is awkward, although I live with someone who I could describe as such. But I think you have to look at context. Say a presidential candidate stated they would only pick a running mate who was male and white. There would be outrage. Although it might be politically correct now, still the idea of Biden limiting his VP choice to one demographic group and gender is not a good precedent.

    201. Chester says:

Sure you worked hard to elect Republicans. Romney, McCain, JEB! And now you are triggered. Typical woke snowflake.

    202. Brandon says:

#207. Agreed. I think it’s completely absurd. Definitely a double standard there.

    203. Wes says:

You may not have noticed, Brandon, but Chester is a troll. He spouts left-wing talking points’ caricatures of conservative thought.

      – Yes. Appears to be much better than the past few. Texas has so many counties, though.

    205. Robbie says:

For whatever reason, California is experiencing electronic reporting issues and their numbers are underreported. By how much? Who knows, but the bulk of LA County has not reported. If the don’t today, then tomorrow could produce a result that skews how things really are.

    206. Phil says:

Texas cases pretty much all in now. Very nice drop of over 20% from yesterday. Of course day to day drops are influenced by backlogs, reporting and such. The moving seven day average does mean something, however, and it’s fallen in Texas by a significant amount over the last seven days. Something to watch.

    207. Robbie says:

LA County has finally reported. They announced 3,290 new cases. A bad number, but some of it’s a backlog. Still, California is going to come in flat week over week.

Nationally, it appears as though we’ll finish with about 10,000 fewer cases than last Thursday. That’s been the case all week and it’s good news.

    208. Robbie says:

Early returns look good for Hagerty in Tennessee.

“Alexandria “Commie Barbie” Ocasio-Cortez thinks she’s a brown genius.”

-Didn’t see this until Brandon pointed it out.

Not sure if it is racist, but it is just plain stupid and nonsensical.

Chester, try to do better, will you please?

    210. Robbie says:

      Hagerty wins.

    211. Phil says:

Republicans won’t have to spend much in Tennessee this fall.

Democrats latest war veteran fake moderate trailing in early returns on the Democratic side.

    212. Tina says:

Phil, fantastic weak for our side.

      Kansas and Tennessee locked up.
